I think we shouldn't discuss this. Because its a shame the way we build and maintain our airports. Airports are the ports of entry and specially to foreigners its what gives them a first impression about our country. There is nothing more embarrasing than the state of our airports given the important role they play. Now I live in the US and my job takes me to many corners of this country. I have used giant airports and tiny airports - while the size varies the one thing that consistently strikes the eye is neatness, organization, and comfort. Airports in India are a long way off being anything respectful. The domestic terminal at Kolkata has some niceness around it but the moment you step outside, you want to throw up. Sorry but thats the truth.

Hello Sir, the country you are in is developing from past 230 years while India is developing from past 60 years so the difference is 170 years but still what we've achieved in this small time as compared to US is amazing and wonderful isn't ? Have a look at CSIA (Mumbai) DIAL(B'lore)and IGI (Delhi in 2010). Attention to detail my brother
NONE ,... I've almost seen all major airports in India, and abroad, I'd say there are few bus stations in India that are better than the airports and well managed.. Preetish
CONSIDERING THE NUMBER OF PASSENGERS USING MUMBAI AIRPORT, IT COMES AROUND TO BE THE OBVIOUS CHOICE AND OPINIONED. BUT AT A RATE OF CAPACITY AND FLIGHTS AND THE FREQUENCY CONSIDERATION, THERE MIGHT BE A DIFFERENT CHOICE. NOTED WITH IMPARTIAL CONSIDERATIONS. A LOT WOULD BE WELCOMED IF THERE IS ANOTHER ASPECT I MISS.
Its common sense, the first flight in India was between Karachi and Mumbai in some 1932..I might be wrong on the exact date. So older the airport more tough is it to modernise it and expand it.
Mumbai Airport has the issue of slums around it and population that needs to be cleared it is around 80,000. Clearing 80,000 people now is by any standards a very tough task.
Better would be to construct a New Airport at Navi Mumbai at Panvel and keep the Mumbai Airport only for domestic traffic. This will solve most of the problems of Mumbai Airport.
Instead of putting endless amounts of cash and money in modernising and improving Mumbai Airport construct a brand new Airport at Navi Mumbai is any time a more practical solution.
Airport Tax is very high in India as compared to other international airport they even offer very good service. Bombay airport is the busiest airport in India, and Gov. is earning a lot from it even they are charging visitors also. Gov. must do something to modernis airport
When I went to india in 02-03 for christmas, man when I got off at bombay to switch my flight to go to hyderabad. They put us in this place that felt like a bus stand, the fans werent working except for a few & the flies were inside the airport like some fruit market. None of the shops were open which made it even worse.
When I went last summer, I am glad I went straight from Frankfurt to Hyderabad. It is a waste to change flights in a bad airport.
Check out Japans newest airport. It was built off shore, india needs to improve if it wants more investors in the future. The current road ways themselves are a huge problem.
Dear Friends, Mmbai airport has been voted the best by a section of people. Most important section,Airline Pilots,is left out.If you ask them then you will know that this airport is not one of the bestapproach for safe landing. All possible obstacles are there directly in line with the Runway 27( 271 deg). This runway, had it been made made even 272 or 273 then it would have ben much safer.
