work in a BPO Unit
by solomon T on Sep 16, 2004 03:17 AM

The Author of this page is quite right, many people have laid their lives for us to enjoy 8 hrs work but i feel all what they have done is wasted.

Nobody wants to stop outsourcing but have a time limit and don't expliot the young generation "REMEMBER THEY ARE THE PILLARS OF THIS COUNTRY" we would not want our country to go into the hands people who are weak both Physically and with different aliments.

call centers
by V.Narayanaswamy on Sep 16, 2004 02:46 AM

Well said Chandrasekharan,

In the name of giving fat salaries (which even is peanuts when compared to the wages given for a similar workman in the west)only sweatshops are being opened in India. Why should people having good qualification work in these situations because they get better slary than other jobless? Why can't they put their knowledge to find new things. We have so called programmers who can follow only the formulas and languages est. Why they cannot devise languages like they have done i the western world. Are our so called software giants done anything new expect writing programmes using the ageold Fortran basic cobol etc languages. Let them divert the people from ventures where they can make quick money including call centers by ruinng the lives of the Indian youth but focus their attention on bringing about newer innovations in the IT field.

As for the opinion of one wiseacre that should the call center employees also join and swell the ranks of the jobless let me ask why dont you think about doing some original work and earn money instead of being intellectual slaves to westerners.

Nicely written.

Disagree on the health issue - too many professions require "not regular" duty hours". But agree on 2 other counts.

1. Labor meant for foreign nations have 1/2(or less) the effect of labor meant for local economy. In essence, the money earned is the benefit and not the value of the labor(which can be classified as a commodity in itself) which rolls in the economic cycle to produce higher benefits.

2. Literally nothing has been done to cultivate the domestic market in India (which is very very sizeable) and apply similar business models of the west - that in itself will/would have eliminated the need for BPO jobs. The harshest critic will agree that a potential market of 1B is much higher that 290M. Suggest people living in India to start talking to representatives in terms of transforming govt. to start the process of moving towards a more systematic, IT dependent service provider. That in turn will start off the next economic boom - the Indian market....

3. Just take a few deep breaths and think of the single mother whose only source of income was answering phone calls in Chicago-now doesn't have a job. Is it fair to rob Peter and pay Paul?

Well said! One more point to add is the loss of innovative thinking power of Indian youth. India is in the 44th rank in innovative power.

This article makes for good reading only because of its atrocity.Taking a dig at Infy chairman is inappropriate and unwarranted. The writer is also trying to arouse sentiments of the youth for some reason.Well thats for making your cause sound noble I guess.Anyway you have to make a living so you can get away with garbage like these

BPOs
by rishi on Sep 16, 2004 01:41 AM

I do agree with the author but I feel the views in the article are hugely one sided and the other side of the coin is totally ignored. Every profession has its boquett of advantages and drawbacks. I would like to ask the author about the situation in Hotel Industry, Airlines, Media & Film Industry, Surface Transport etc. I strongly feel the author is heavily biased and has presented a very myopic view of the budding BPO industry. Being a BPO employee myself, I do expect some encouragement and appreciation from the Society at large.
