Good Intentions but Lopsided View? SolutionsPlease!
by Anand Doctor on Sep 16, 2004 09:32 AM

Dear writer,
There can be no doubt about your good intentions but does that justify the narrow-eyed piece you've written?
How can you write about only one side of the coin?
More importantly, why just pinpoint problems, which is an easy task and a popular passtime?
Why haven't you provided some practical solutions? Because it involves the use of brains and not just heart, mayhap?

Thanks but no thanks.

Anand.

The main reason behind health problem shud be.....
by Amit on Sep 16, 2004 09:32 AM

Well i agree with the writer that working during nights may be creating health problems to the call center workers, but one of the reasons behind it wat i think is that .. these workers actually dont take a good sleep during the daytime when they are at home... Being young they freak out with the friends in the evening who are day workers and are back from office by that time.. I have a friend whose health is detiorating day by day and he has become so weak that a wind can also blow him away... Jokes apart but he has been working for past 5 yrs in call center, and his shifts keep on changing every week and i have seen him very less taking rest at his home...

So i feel that even if u have a night shift each day, if you take good sleep during daytime you can cope up with ur health problems... after all you earn to live a good living ....

Motivating but fake
by Parmeet on Sep 16, 2004 09:30 AM

It's an article which is well written based on information gathered from here and there. Though there are things which point out to the real problems in the BPO industry but it's not just with the BPO industry, infact it's part of the game. I think the author has some personal grudges with the BPO industry or sometimes I think is this article a political stunt to misguide the great Indian workforce?

stop being panicky.
by Ashok Chavda on Sep 16, 2004 09:22 AM

Dear Chandrasekaran.
BPO is not the only industry that works in night shifts in India, there are others too where "young sons and daughters" of India are working in perfect conditions. they are like, hotel and hospitality industry, fire brigade, police force, airport and airways staff, doodhwala, car-washers (have you ever seen young boys washing cars at night?) paperwalas, Railways and so on..........: and if all these people have found ways to cope up with their lives, it is just matter of time BPO industry will find some sort of way to cope up. and ultimately, if you dont do it here, then some other country will take them.
Do you remember how our fathers three generation back used to work, then came bit of prosperity and now it is time to consolidate your prosperity. One has to walk, no, run with the time otherwise one will perish, and Darwin gave you the theory of survival of the fittest more then a century ago, isn't it?
So, stop sounding panicky, because panic is most contagious dieses. It spreads faster then you think.
If one has to survive in this country honestly, one will have to work and work real hard.

Ashok Chavda.

Positives overweigh the negatives!
by Gopi Krishna Arumugam on Sep 16, 2004 09:21 AM

Its true that we do work during nights. But there are lots of other industries too that operate in the nights, from centuries ago. It is absolutely fine to work during the nights if we ge proper sleep and food intake.

I do agree that the food served is not as hygenic as a 5-star hotel, but agreed, the concerned departments have to improvise on this front.

But look at the amount of employment ITES/BPO generates..look the revenues...look at the other industries that have boomed due to BPO, like the catering industry, transportation, real estate/construction, furniture, computer hardware, telecom equipments and the list goes on...

Look at the number of Indian youngsters whose communication skills and technical skills have improved by leaps & bounds...due to the BPO industry..

If not supported by India & her govt, this industry will go to Philippines or similar countries in future...

Let us not kill the Goose that lays Golden Eggs, please!

Thanks!

righto

author's facts point to 2 of the things that may happen :

1.BPO loses its foot in India
- Not possible because of pay factor.
2.Attrition rate will always be high, people will only go to earn money for a while and then switch over to more comfortable and worthy jobs as and when they can.

2 - already seems reality. which means, that the management at a BPO outsourcing firm must be novel, to ASSUME that attrition is high - and is going to remain so - and still be able to produce effective results. (As with attrition remaining high, no. of people coming in is also going to increase - as with our ever increasing population)

Working in a BPO Unit
by Mahendra Singh on Sep 16, 2004 08:30 AM

C'mon man, don't be too sentimental. Agreed there are problems. But there's no nirvana out here on this planet. Every job has its drawbacks. Look at the coal miners working in hellish environments hundreds of feet underground or workers in chemical factories breathing noxious fumes 14 hours a day or Army personnel on 24 hours duty in posts the size of a five-rupee coin in minus 40C temperatures etc, etc. So what are you talking about when you say that youngsters require a better deal than the almost 5 star BPO work culture and environment they are working in?
So your argument is devoid of rational analysis.

work in a noreliable call centers
by veera on Sep 16, 2004 08:03 AM

In today's world working in call centers is been prefered as apart people are not seeing their future or health value which is most important and which deserves a lot from a highly paid salaries, so people should also think and concern over it ,because it is a slow poision for a health which they should be very keen off.
