B.P.O
by Naveen on Sep 16, 2004 01:24 AM

Yes, absolutely right. What have you said sir, I Agree with that, and that too because I also worked with an International centre. I agree that B.P.O's pay very high but whats the use of that money when it has to be invested for your health problems that may rise in the future.

Take up a hotel job then
by haphar on Sep 16, 2004 01:14 AM  | Hide replies

Has any one praising the author ( and the author of the column itself ) ever worked in a hotel ? 12 hours AT ONLY WORK is a lucky day, and it is a 6 day week, and there are late nights, so want to change your BPO job for a hotel one ? There are people who travel 2 hours every day in the day too ( and NO PICK UP/ DROP ) AND work 10 hours in the day time too, so how come no one is calling their employers exploiters ?The hotel and direct sales are the jobs that all these people would ahve been doing if these BPO jobs did not exist, so tell me how much safer are those ?

I agree with you 100%. I have worked in a hotel, and that too a five star and 12 hours is the least you do. The maximum I have worked is about 23 hours straight.

BPO PROS : BEWARE OF THE CROCODILE TEARS!
by SUBASH .S on Sep 16, 2004 01:13 AM

Mr.Chandrasekhar ,

Ever heard about the anglo stenos who slog all thru day on the old fashioned typewriter with mettalic keys and bruised their fingers? The board operator who proficiently handle a continuous spate of incoming calls all through the day ? Watchmen in yr posh upmarket flat from where u write your articles , who brave mosquitoes and cold ? Machine tool operators who work in heat and steamand extremely unconducive environment in the graveyard shift ? Sales representatives who run down the sole of their shoes selling thru the day , write reports for their bosses in the evening and travel by rickety old buses to hit the next hot dusty town, on the road the nxt day ? Medical representatives who GET PROMOTED TO AREA SALES MANAGERS and acquire acidity and blood pressure as a add on? Lab Pathologists who deal with human excretia for tests ? Nurses who work nights and see people dying in front of them ? Train drivers who work in steam and noise all through and see people jumping in front of their engine ? The list , my dear friend , is endless . every job has it's occupational hazards and it is fool hardy to be shedding crocodile tears.Save yr tears!!!

Truth of working in BPO
by Nisha on Sep 16, 2004 01:11 AM

Hi!

I saw your article regarding the works going on in the BPO Call Centre, whatever said was right but there is a fact that everyone should accept.

And the fact is that BPO is the only field that pays the workers a good package. And the reason is that the works involves in night and the works are given from the united states.

If the youth here are paid a good package if working in any private organisations then what is the need that they should go and work in night shifts inspite of loosing their eye sight, sleep, their rest, their family and every thing.

No organisation is there in our country that would pay a graduate an annual salary of 1,40,000.

And the one more fact is that even MBA, MCA and BE graduates are working in the call center just because they are not able to earn the money that they have spent for their studies.

This is my opinion and i am working in a call center.

an eye-opener
by Snehal on Sep 16, 2004 12:50 AM

Well its true that the call center jobs pay well and unemployed youth get these jobs easily. But this article is important because it is an eye opener and people will be aware of the risks involved with such kind of jobs. Then, its upto the youth to decide whether they want to try for a job elsewhere or continue working here assuming that all is well.
Pass on this article to all those who work in call centers !

Work in a BPO unit? Beware
by Nilanjan Das on Sep 16, 2004 12:35 AM

sir the report is nicely done. but i would like to awaken you out of your dream and ask you to be a bit more realistic. what do you mean by saying " be bold and let them know their ugly tricks"? would you prefer a jobless india or can you suggest any other options. it is easy talking idealistic but then reality, with due respect to your capabilities, is a very different game i suppose. BPO has given atleast a good opportunity to india's youth to earn a respectable life. as for odd hours of work what happens to indians who go to USA for instance. there the normal hours are odd for us. doesn't that affect us then. pizzas and cola? i don't think they can be blamed. else how do you describe reports of obase children and teenagers becoming a major problem. don't think they recruit at so early an age. well thank you for warning us of the pitfalls of BPO, but i don't think we should be so very critical about their functionality. similar problems were reported when software first came to india. but now it is all fine and we have accepted it as a way of life. think with time we will learn to live with BPO as well. thank you.
yours truely,
nilanjan

Man ..people need to think broader and come to life with this naked truth which stares on MANKIND's face

Work in a BPO unit? Beware
by Anand Iyer on Sep 16, 2004 12:18 AM

Hello All,

The author has very eloquently pointed out the evils of call centers but forgets to think that it is same young hearts that venture out into the night & freak out at night clubs till daybreak. Most of the young dont follow the routine of go to bed at 9 PM & wake up at 5 AM, definitely not the current MTV generation anyway. Some of these young ones have now decided to use that time more productively now.

You will have good jobs & you will have jobs that are not easy, why is the author not whining about the army or the navy or the air force or the municipal corporation ... is it because it is a new industry & it is easy to blame it?

Yes there are evils to it but consider this, I have seen guys completing professional courses like CCNA & MCSE & getting paid 3000 rupees a month pre call center era & now the same guys are getting 10000 rupees as base salary every month. What would be their point of view on this? Care to think?

Somehow I feel the author should take some time to write about the traffic policeman who stands in the middle of the road come rain or shine, right in the midst of fumes being belched out from the cars we drive. Are you listening?
