Know these people?
by utpal bhuyan on Feb 28, 2012 04:08 AM  | Hide replies

Indra Nooyi, Sanjeev Bikhchandani, Deep Kalra, Chender Baljee.
All IIM graduates.
Of course one does not need to know english but in India english is taught in schools and most of the books, newspapers and magazines are published in english.
If you do not know english, you are a bad student. Though you can still go on and become successful, a B-school cannot help you

I think he is not talking about IIMs or even universities, you know there are n number of local colleges offering MBA without proper infra structure and teaching staff...and many of the students graduated from there could not speak english...they end up in selling credit cards and SIM cards

right on!

One of the funniest things that goes on in Indian newspapers is reporting about how some IIM Grad got '1 crore rupee' salary etc...there is nothing more disinginious and nothig more fake than that kind of reporting. The only circumstance when that happens is if a person was making $200K annual (pretty rare for under 30) before joining IIM program and the company is absorbing him back at the same salary (zero increment from pre-MBA salary).

In addition, why does CAT weigh so heavily on English? I have found that the smartest people in India are not fluent in English and I use that fact in my recruiting and it has always worked!

"Smartest people in India are not fluent in English" is the most ridiculous generalization I have ever heard of. Dont just say something because it makes for an excellent punchline. In fact, your English seems to be fluent going by your comment. Are you trying to say that you are not smart? If so, then how are you able to discriminate between smart and smarter people (which would be necessary for your recruitment process)?

Why blame MBAs
by Sunil VW on Feb 28, 2012 02:01 AM  | Hide replies

Though the questions raised are pertinent, but can u realy blame MBA isntitutes or their wards for this? in a country like India where crony capatilism is all pervasive, super rich are getting richer by cornering scarce resouces be it land or licenses. When you look at players of any industry be it retail, Telecom or power you will find same 10 odd business family's having fingers in the evry pie. It is ridiculous to suggest that they are "Jack of all trades and also master in them" . The fact is every MBA is not like Zuckerberg or Narayan Murthy, and if even a small fraction of MBAs decide to become enterpreneur, they would largely end up attempting so called run of the mill ventures? then who would fund their ventures? for VC idea is not killer, for banks like yours, you need last three years P&L and BS, Pl tell us how many businesses really breake even in 2-3 yrs time. In my case after resigning from a job i have been struggling to survive as an entrepreneur. Right from getting land, elctricity, manufacturing license it has been night mare. On top of it forget term loan, even OD facility is immpossible unless you don't mortgage valuables (most likely your house). On the contrary there are many instances where state govenment gift 100 of acres of land to big industrial houses at throwaway prices who use the same land to raise capital. So given their financial background, can't blame MBAs if they do not take risk as not them but dishonest system is at fault.

Indian MBA - more capabilities required
by Ravinder Arora on Feb 27, 2012 10:17 PM

MBA, infact an interdisciplinary degree created after merging economics, marketing, finance, IT, company law, commerce etc. making a the person a jack of all, as per short sighted market demand.

Even after creating so many MBA's there are hardly any indian companies, that can really boast of having created own products. Our MBAs may be good managers who deliver profits by working extra time and sitting late, but definitely not business leaders and may lack soft skills.

clerks are better than MBA creating such ads
by rajashekar hegde on Feb 27, 2012 09:51 PM

Have you all seen the new vodafone ad with a small girl and boy saying 'instant connection'??? Instant connection? my foot. Such a bad advertisement targetting even kids of 10-12 age group. It was so embarrasing to watch it along with my kid who is 12. When media which is so powerful can be so irresponsbile who will manage the confused kids and helpless parents?

Courage!
by Suresh B on Feb 27, 2012 09:22 PM

to speak the truth! Amazing, that an establishment chap has had the courage to speak so bluntly. By some of the reactions in this segment, not many have understood the message! But thats normal , most people wish to have a nice salary, and the roots lie in our education system designed by Lord Macaulay. We faithfully produce clerks to serve the Raj! The longer a person studies the less his analytical ability- the difference between 'how' and 'why'.Hats Off.

Bang On

I think this is the apt description of current MBA's. I agree most of our current crop of MBA's cant even think on their feet. They only want directions.

Occupying a good position does not necessarily mean they are leaders. We all crib about our bosses.

But are MBA schools required to turn out leaders.

It is a case of sour grapes. It is very likely that ICICI may not have secured a good slot at the B-School campuses and the gentleman in question is complaining.
