if Business school are creating clerks what other schools and colleges are producing then? even in colleges where there are no laboratory reagents, no apparatus, no basic chemicals to conduct experiments, we get B.Sc. and M.Sc and PhD in chemistry from such colleges. what about this? see the computer education institutes mushroomed in every nook and corner? what they teach?

My $0.02 cents

Somewhat disagree with the points mentioned in article.
My take is that the rigorous selection of students in a top bschool makes it highly probable that among the 100 or odd students in class, aleast 20-50 would be good leadership material and will amount to good managers. For a middle tier Bschool this ratio is less.

Now teaching wise, students most likely wont learn much from class room but find it interesting in participating in inter bschool case studies and competitions. Most students who come for MBA these classes are toppers in school and college and would have learned MBA syllabus on their own. What they seek in a good bschool is the networking potential and may be 2-3 good inspiring teachers in each discipline. Not all teachers are excellent, but atleast some teachers are of such caliber that student will learn much more than from syllabus. Also internship accords better opportunities for right candidates to widen their horizon.

This explains the top heaviness of India blue chip corporates with top graduates from these schools. And hardly 1% of these crowd will ever rise to true influential CXO positions but that is enough. Do we need two Gandhis or Steve Jobs when a single of ilk did the transformation of the world??

The other side

I agree with the author completely on the questions he has raised. I believe he has missed adding a few other angles.
1. Does not some blame also rest with the students who are of sub-standard quality to start with, do not put in the right amount of effort, and only seek MBA for placements or MBA tag and not learning. Do they respect and appreciate the 'good' faculty who makes them do the 'hard' work?
2. Does not some blame rest with industry who have not really put in the effort or investments to reshape the curriculum? They look at MBA colleges as talent hunting ground, and when talent fails, look at blaming the MBA colleges. Even MBA colleges started by corporates are abysmal and MDPs run by companies are a method to control attrition by tying up employees for a longer term.
There are bigger problems then those mentioned by the author.

B School

Longback a person observed, that when hiring is the order of the day, many ricemerchants have started B Schools. Lecturers can be hired. Take a better profit than selling rice.
The minimum qualification is another added products. An Engineer, A Doctor and a B.Com all weigh equal weight in their selection scale. Another wonder still I am having is what type of experience a professor should have to face the students with the subject that he has to handle. Are they avaialble for the total number of B.Schools.

There is a plus in all this though .. the life skillsthat he talks about is gained by doing a GD at 5 am and 11 pm for that job that a student aspires for. No complaining, no fussing, just arelentless pursuit of a goal. Try asking a student in Spain or France to attend an interview at 5 am. No wonder those economies have such inflexible, arrogant and fussy labour force. No doubt things in India can be improved, but dont trash everything as bad.

Just wait 5-6 years more-standard will drastically come down, upto 10th as per new directives-no one is to be failed, parents do not have right to know competitive performance of their wards only generalisation. Teachers have already given up killing instict to develop shining students-as their concentration is to pass all.
Similarly quota system whether SC,ST, Backward or management and studying for the purpose of acquiring a job have mushroomed not even B rather C or D type Institute, which are only distributing official degrees.

I absolutley agree ,this the story of indian education system as a whole and not just B schools. As we have politicians owning colleges and universities were as they themself have never been to one.So how they can understand what does education means. They have taken it as a money making machine.
