IITS AND IIMS ARE THE TWO PILLARS OF TREASURES OF KNOWLEDGE WHICH KEEPS THE NATIONAL INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL HIGH IN SPIRITS BUT TARGETTING THEM TO GAIN POLITICAL ADVANTAGE IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE AND CONSPIRACY TO DEMORALIZE INTELLIZENTSIA SINCE 1991 TILL DATE

From Prof. Rao's comment "Over 70 per cent of faculty at IIT Bombay have at least one degree from an IIT." If that is the case, then when they were students they were world class, but after they became faculty, they ceased to be world class!! JR should provide data to substantiate his claims. Can he cite any research?!!

WRT to BJP, they want to make astrology a science, it shows how much they love and understand science. They blindly support anything Indian, with substance or not.

JR has attacked IITs for defending a business institution (Reliance). Please tell us their contribution to science, research, etc. I would say because of these business institutions, we dont have proper research culture. Reliance had started a biotech firm, is there any substantial and fruitful research from them?

Business and academic research institution will coexist. If anyone who has an idea that can be immediately monetized, they can work in a business environment. If anyone else has a good idea that is promising but who immediately cannot demonstrate its relevance has to work in an academic environment. The manager will tell a researcher to give result in 1 year, but the researcher knows that his work can be completed only in 5 years, he cannot work in a business research establishment.

1 SC and 1 OBC Faculty out of 428 Faculties in IIT Delhi
by BahujanHitay BahujanSukhay on May 26, 2011 07:43 PM  | Hide replies

Hon'ble Minister Mr.Jairam Ramesh has reiterated what were telling to everyone from last 10 years. Being from IIT system we know inner details of the IIT system. It is the Brahminical Gurukul system of ancient times where SC/ST/OBC (Shudra and Atishudra) people are discriminated and harassed as mentioned in Manusmriti. In IIT Delhi only one faculty of Scheduled Caste (SC) and one of Other Backward Class (OBC) is there out of 428 faculties. If there would have been some faculty from the reserved category existing then everybody would have blamed Quota/Reservation faculties. Thus, so called meritorious faculty are from General Category. However, in spite of this fact still these IIT faculties are not world class or even worthy to mention about their inventions for the nation. They invest their all time and so called talent to hamper progress of SC/ST/OBC students. As Government employees they take oath stating that they will abide by the Constitution of India. However, they act against all constitutional provisions. They are real traitors of the nation. They should be prosecuted for treachery against the nation laws.

Mostly Student - then Professors - then Facilities (non-science)
by Debabrata Pal on May 26, 2011 05:21 PM  | Hide replies

My 2 cents ;-)

With no intention to insult anybody, let me give you an example from lot of my interactions with many IITans & IIMians - btw, I'm not arguing this since I haven't passed from these universities:

One of Top 5 students of IIMC batch (Finance Speciality) mentioned to me that his practical knowledge about daily use of Finance in an Investment Banking World is very minimal, compared to my knowledge - I have "Master of Applied Finance" from a reputed Australian University where our teachers were 15-20 years practioners (Traders, Product Control, Hedge Fund Mngrs, Privite Equity guys, Accountants, Corporate Finance head hochos, Lawyers, etc.) and Reseachers.

So, you see that it's important to learn whatever is applied from Practioners & Reseachers rather than Theory Masters.

Btw, I hold a first class Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from one of India's Top10 Engineeing Institute also, which was the incubation centre for IITKGP in 1950s and been with Global Investment Banks for 10 years.

Thus, the brand like IIT & IIM matters sometimes - may be in the initial part of career but not after that - it's all about the calibre of the students (& sometimes professors) that make or break a name for their institute or their careers !

Thanks !

Very true. Some one came from US and went to IIT Kanpur for a joint project. His opinion about the faclty was not high at all. This guy passed out of IIT and could not get job any where else, so he started teaching in IIT itself. With reservation in place, the student quality will go down significantly as well. Thanks to Mr Kapil Sibal

Mr. Pal, Don't mention it.

The pathetic situation is the policy makers are busy making money ignoring ur ideas.

It is high time that these scholars should motivate themselves and create a revolution by their innovative thinkings. We require think tankers to assist these Policy makers who only know to get votes by muscle and money power

Promote the Teaching class
by charlie brown on May 26, 2011 05:14 PM  | Hide replies

In India, the teachers remain poor whereas the students who learn from them become rich. This situation needs to addressed by increasing the salary of the teachers and granting more incentives to these teachers to conduct innovative inventions. Only then the insecurities of the teachers will vanish and performance will be enhanced.

Agreed - we need to pay good salaries to teachers and professors otherwise why they will come and teach, leaving their comfortable lives !

IITs thought about getting overseas knowledgeable staff with extra pay beyond Govt pay from IITs own pockets i.e. Alumni, etc that but the Govt shot down the idea in name of bureaucracy !

The Brand value of IIT goes when
by Politician Hater on May 26, 2011 05:09 PM  | Hide replies

The Brand value of IIT was gone when this illiterate HRD minister Kapil Sibal converted lots of Engineering college to IIT and opened one IIT in every states. I feel at present NIT and IITs are same. Congress govt will take credit opening IIT in each state.

I agree, now that raises issue of budget/finance..people whom can do research/innovation etc don't have money and who have don't share...Indian crorepatis need to donate heavly for these...West is know for it and also lot of Govt finance for it but private donors are much more and change of mindset

Reality
by Ricky topping on May 26, 2011 04:58 PM

The "horsepower" of tech innovation is increasing about200% faster every six months than the "horse sense" of the faculty. This is the reality of neoteric age. Today's students will find themselves in the same boat facing the same question in a much shorter time period. The debate should focus on what need to be done.
