"After graduation in Electrical Engineering (with an emphasis in Electronics) from Delhi College of Engineering (Now renamed Delhi Technological University), Delhi University in 1971, he joined a Delhi-based semiconductor company called Continental Devices. In 1975, he left this job and joined University of Cincinnati, in Cincinnati, Ohio-USA, to pursue a master's degree in Electrical Engineering, where he specialized in Solid State Science"

Most of innovators in INTEL are IITians Go and check the site!!!!!!
Leave alone a B/C grade university in the USA, Germany or UK, IITs are no match for even Indian premier institutes like Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Calcutta, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Indian Association for the cultivation of Science, Calcutta etc. Unlike universities or institutes abroad, the IIT faculties are not worried about tenure which is evaluated abroad by the 1)magnitude of grants the faculties bring to the institute by original research proposal, 2)how many graduate students they get 3)how the students have graded them as teachers and many other such index materials. If they are disqualified by any of these three fundamental parameters, they are shown the door. Such things do not exist in India and all the faculty member has to do is to try being in the good books of some godfather (mostly in the ministry) by whose recco he has gotten into the institute in the very first place. Standard of teaching is abysmally appaling. To summarize, the minister has told the very right thing which the government should seriously look into. It may not be that difficult to be a "world class student" but to be a "world class faculty" in teaching with "world class research output", the faculty has to exert himself to his maximum, there is no respite.
Environment minister should talk about environmental issues rather than making non-sense statement about IITs. It is not that you have passed out from IIT can talk rubbish about IITs wihtout knwoing the facts. Just compare these points; Established; IIT (1950s) Vs MIT (1860s) when we have started our IITs they were 100 years old Budget; 200 crore Vs 40,000 crore
Faculty; 200 Vs 1000 Education was main focus for IITs and less research oriented courses,it is only now research is incorporated. Above of all no social commitments like reservations in the western institutes...
My comment is on the basis of my study on five time honoured IITs. Jairam Ramesh’s statement holds some substance but gets diluted if one goes a bit deeper. The IITs were in fact established to develop higher technical education in India both in quantity and quality to satisfy India’s post-war needs for high grade technologists. They adopted the MIT model based on certain features that include strong science base, course structure that integrated teaching and practical training, the due importance given to humanities and social science in engineering curriculum, the characteristics of land-grant University committed to economic and social development of its region and most importantly its contribution to industry. Given the mandate of producing engineering graduates, IITs did lay strong emphasis on education but neglected research (say) till mid 1980s. Comparing 50-60 year old IITs (that too comparatively poor), with world class institutions like MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Cambridge, Yale (endowment of nearly $10bn, $13bn, $27bn, $7bn, $16bn respectively) and their years of existence alone, is somewhat unjustified. Though IITs still lack research output mainly in terms of publications and IPR, newer research initiatives such as spin-offs are quite comparable.

Reservations in student admissions and in faculty selections and promotions breeds mediocrity.
Why is nobody discussing this. Why in denial mode?

Go and talk to professor Raj Gopal Chatterji at Saha Nuclear physics Cal..who is IIT-kanpurAlumni....PHD from UCLA topper of west bengal
it is more important to teach in rural areas other than iits because the students from farmers family will want to become engineers and so how to teach them in their manners and using their local language is not so much easy.

Recognition comes by achievement. An MIT or Harvard in US has more reputation in the US because they PERFORM like that unlike the IIT shitbags!!! IIT is no different from a normal institute in India!!! IIT has miserably failed in building a brand name BASED ON PERFORMANCE for itself.

1st campus recruitment should be stopped. 2ndly the recruitment of these guys should be based upon some exclusive innovations they develop during their student period(projects and internship should be accordingly amended in the sense it should be accepted by the society in general) Otherwise let them fall in line with other Job seekers
Re: Re: Re: Reservation

Exactly. Those IIT rats are no better than non-IITians and need to struggle just like the non-IITians to climb up the ladder.
Prof Rao, Its true that 70% of faculty of IIT bombay have atleast one degree from an IIT but can they be aboserbed as a faculty member by world pretigius universities like MIT, Cambridge, CIT. Why is Indian IIT not among top 100 universities of the world. Yes it is because of the faculty they have with them. They can't gromme students from their current level which is already high from the time of their admission to IIT to a level which is at par with MIT , Cambridge or CIT. Why students prefer to move to institutes like MIT for their resarch related study ? It is just because we don't have faculty and facility of that level in IITs. Don't behave like an ostrich who hides its face in sand and thinks that he is safe from all dangers. We certainly need Jairam Ramesh type person who can deliver a bold statement like this.

Simple, IIT is an over-hyped piece of pigShit whose funding from OUR POCKETS needs to be immediately stopped. Let those worthless scumbags pay for themselves and not waste tax payers money for their ZERO INNOVATION!!

The students are not at fault. They are truely world class. It is the faculty, Facility, and our beaurocrats who are to be blamed

You find good students everywhere, whether in IIT or NON-IIT. It has nothing to do with the institute. Thats the reason the contribution of IITians globally is equally matched by the NON-IITians. There is no difference between the IITians and NON-IITians in competency levels because both are very good workers and ZERO INNOVATORS!! Even a carpenter turned engineer and college dropouts in the West seems to easily beat these so-called Indian biggies HANDS DOWN!!
Thanks to Nehruvian Socialist policy, tax payers need to support such worthless institutions!!!! Grants should be removed and let IIT manage its own resources without even a single rupee of tax payers money wasting on these scumbags!!

That scumbag Nehru's socialist policies have ruined India!!! Even the "higher education" sector is totally socialistic!!!! "EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, HE HE HE" (Good for primary education but NOT HIGHER EDUCATION)!!! MY BIG FAT FuckinBalls!!!
Absolutely ZERO recognition for TALENT and reservations everywhere to accomodate every piece of garbage moving on the streets into the "HIGHER EDUCATION" classrooms!! What a fuckAll policy is this??!!

If there is no recognition for the grads of other institutes, then there is danger of demanding 85% reservation in both public and private sectors
