IIT vs IIM
by jim kim on Jan 20, 2011 12:37 PM

IITs are following what IIMs did 2 yrs back, increasing their fees manifolds. The increase in fees by IIMs resulted in many private MBA colleges increasing thier fees on the simple pretext that IIMs have increase their fees.
The common students suffered and they ended up in low paying jobs and high EMIs of education loan.
Increase in fees by IITs will result in same thing, private engineering colleges woud increase their fees thus making engineering education out of reach of many...

Encourage Study in Foreign countries

This massive hike in fee for IIT students would make students go abroad for technical studies. It would be far cheaper to study abroad. Education should not be commercilised. It should be seen as a service to the nation.

Govt has made all type of education as a commercial business to earn huge profit for non-govt schools. Now even if IITs increase the fees 5 fold, there will be no impact on common man, where eavery day prices of every item are increasing like an uncontrolled economy.

wrong move

I can not imagine paying 10 lakhs fee for graduation...it is a regressive move my govt....this much fee not just difficult for poor people but also a average middle class person...one more implication of it would be that person who will be doing MBA after that would have to take another loan of 10-12 Lakhs for MBA...it will discourage student to do higher studies after graduation...ye log pagal ho rahe hain kya...this govt should be immediately sack down...they can have scams of 1 lakh crore, trillions of rupees in swiss accounts, sky rocketing inflation and now they can not spend some money of common man education....

Why do we complain about hike in Engg education fees, while accept much higher fees for MBA ? Please see that the council has proposed a 'low-interest' education loan scheme for poor students. If the hike is important for achieving autonomy, let us all support it.

Fee Hike
by subbaraya ramakrishna on Jan 20, 2011 10:04 AM  | Hide replies

The idea mooted by the IIT council to hike the fee has to be viewed more practically than simply criticizing the very idea of hiking the fees.
The necessities:

* IITs should become self sufficient & autonomous in the real sense.
* Need to sustain & improve the standard of teaching.
* Enhanced Investments for Research & Development activities.
* Motivating & encouraging innovators.
* Improve the infrastructures in the campuses & keep them on par with the best in the world.

Keeping all the above key issues in mind, IITs should have a long term strategy with a broader view of the whole situation. This includes a planned fee hike policy & not skyrocketing the fees by proposing to increase the fees Five folds at one go. As a suggestion based on the long term policy, they should plan a fee hike of say 200% now, and after every year from next year increase propose a further 20 to 25% hike for the next 3 years. After this, they can have further plan to hike the fees by say 10% over the next 3 to 5 years.

When they hike the fee as above, they make a short term & long term plan for improvements (priorities the improvements) on all fronts by bench marking them with the world class institutes.
Plan the expenditure according to the long term plan & keep evaluating the plans, actual achievements & update them periodically.
When they have surplus funds keep them fo

While keeping the fees resonable for students, to become self sufficient IITs should earn through sponsored research from industries and government, and also through technology transfer. In fact students help them to develop new and advanced technologies through which they make money also but they do not share that with students. Also they are funded through public money and hence they must not charge any amount of money from students.

Very elitist
by selvasundar bala on Jan 20, 2011 09:56 AM

why isnt there anyone who represents the common voice. and only from industry. This only goes to sayy some NGO should be part of all these committees to moderate their outlook. Why should IITs free from Government?
Why should they after all the sops get away from some control. after all if they have grown to such stature with Government control at helm how can it be a albatross now?
To cahrge every expense from everyone?
our economy is now reaping the dividend oif some amount of education provided by Government at a particular period.
Kill the PSUs , Kill government subsidy for education , Kill government regulation etc etc, We are getting to be more capitalistic than US.
And by the way the fee should be hiked to the level of US universities so that let IITs compete with them. In fact they should generate a profit to Government for all the support given to them all these years.
Let us not make it more elitist
A comittee by and of elitists with no social orientation at all
