IIT hiking fees
by shyam roy on Jan 20, 2011 04:32 PM

As a matter of fact, government subsidy for pursuing professional courses, generically for all students, should be stopped. This does not happen in case of other professional courses. There are definitely other areas where government money can be spent for meaningfully. However it is true that basic integrity and efficiency must be ensured for those who are responsible for spending government money.

IIT should not Hike price. I am an IIT faculty. I was student too
by Supratic Gupta on Jan 20, 2011 01:48 PM  | Hide replies

Why should IIT incease salary? will it pay higher salary to us? doubtful? Just better.

If IIT faculty wishes more salary, they should just make goverment pay honararium on research projects. Since goverment doesnot pay honararium of research projects, senior faculties rarely apply for them.

And to add, I feel sad that very small % of IIT students actually become engineers, similar to the fact the rarely any students in MBA are from BBA.
Does this country need only Managers and not Engineers?

You are right , but look at it this way -- why is Industry paying so low for engineers?? by and large engineers are used as programmers .... engineers also do not want to pursue engineering in any sense ... problem is on both sides.

What about Middle class people?
by Vijay BhaskarRanga on Jan 20, 2011 01:14 PM  | Hide replies

The reserved class students, can become engineers/doctors without putting any efforts and they need not pay any fee,and moreover they receive scholarships from the dirty government.
The High class students without putting any efforts can easily become engineers/doctors,just by utilising the managament quota, they pay huge money to the politicians and secure a seat in the IIT/IIM

The question,is what about the middle class people? who will take care of them?

this is what you expect from congress. First Arjun singh increased fees of IIMs. Now Kapil Sibal (supposedly intelligent) increased fees of IIT. Next is NIT, medical colleges. Then most of the middle people will not be able to get professional degrees. Even if they get by taking loan, they will spend years repaying such big loans. Good luck India!

Autonomy for IIT's not justified and dangerous.
by abhishek mawle on Jan 20, 2011 12:50 PM

IIT's should not be given autonomy, instead the people desiring autonomy should set up an autonomous institution alone, corporates want to control IIT course, content and administration in the name of autonomy. Let them set up an independent institution and leave IIT's and other national educational institutions alone.

IIT dosen't guarentee a high paying job..
by Indian Guru on Jan 20, 2011 12:38 PM  | Hide replies

2.5 Lakhs per annum is not a joke for even people with good earning capacity. Its also foolish to think of having an educational loan. Just by studying in IIT dosen't guarentee you a good high paying job. Over and above IIT is not end of study, students have to look forward for an MBA as an option and may also take up MS & PhD.

Few of the BestOfBreed students may end up with high paying jobs but not all of them and definitely not in every discipline.

Its better to put ur money in Descent state run engineering college or NITs instead of IITs for a better future..

"Over and above IIT is not end of study, students have to look forward for an MBA"
....
IIT is not meant for the ppl who wants to do an MBA and is insult :-) and fee is also an insult to a common Indian...
Jai Ho Nehru and family for giving the legacy as we are still paying and will continue to pay the "sood" in terms of inflation.

half the people in IIT don't even get 2.5-3 lakh per annum job after passing out. Who will pay their loans? After passing out they will have to take rent loan, food loan.
