Language is just a medium of Communication.
by sultan bhatt on Jul 19, 2011 03:00 PM  | Hide replies

I think a language is just a medium of communication. We should not be worried about correctness of the language as long as it is perceived or understood in the right way.We should not bother about cultural aspects attributed to the language.

what you say makes sense only when you communicate with other speakers who follow the same protocol as yours. When looking at international standards, it is always better to comply with what the world is doing so that you are in sync with everybody. Moreover, we, in today's global Information age interact with people across the globe. So it makes perfect sense to follow what the world is doing, else you would eventually cease to exist. No point in bragging about our cultural heritage and civilization.

Indian English.
by arvind kshirsagar on Jul 19, 2011 01:08 PM  | Hide replies

It is well known to the world that, the Indian English is currently the best English.
But due to some fools, who are mostly US returned are doing the damage to it,by using their pronounsation, for the words like final
situation.
This way even media is also showing their advancement as they are following American English, which is not good.

The 'best' English that you refer to is spoken by 0.01% of Indian English speakers. The rest just speak crap. Call any Indian Call Center and you will see what I mean

English is the worst language
by Rajkumar S on Jun 11, 2011 08:10 AM  | Hide replies

English and related languages are the worst languages mankind has discovered. Each sentence has multiple meanings. Multiple sounds for same alphabets.
Cant do anything now, but mastering is necessary.

These languages have not been "invented". They have evolved over centuries and have undergone some major transformations and influences spread over a long time. That is why there are a lot of discrepancies between spelling and pronunciation and many nuances in meaning.

by Kaushal Meghani on May 18, 2011 05:57 AM  | Hide replies

12. An application letter addressed to the __________________ manager wouldn't fetch one a job as a professor in the English department.

a. personnel
b. personal
c. either of the two

Wrong Try again...

Wrong
The correct answer is b. 'Personal' refers to belonging to an individual, while 'personnel' refers to a group of people and is also used to refer to HR heads, as they manage people.

Correct! 'Personal' refers to belonging to an individual, while 'personnel' refers to a group of people and is also used to refer to HR heads, as they manage people.

REDIFF TUTORIALS!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Subramanian R on May 08, 2011 10:17 PM

What is REDIFF upto? Are you not finding suitable material or suitable contributors?
There are umpteen books to educate poor Indian masses about the synctactic and semantic errors they commit here and abroad? Are you trying to start tutorial classes? What next... lessons in geography, history? ....hahaha...!
If you scraped the bottom of your IDEAS barrel. let me me drop a few for your mighty consideration :
> How should Indians conduct themselves in countries such as Japan, Australia, USA, UK,..
> Useful knowledge about countries while touring/residing/settling down.
> What other countrymen would like to know/ usually ask about our country, when we go abroad
> What acceptable answers do we have in defence of mnay objectionable/ unacceptable practices that prevailed/are prevailing in our country, without denigrating our country
> what answers do we have in answer for questions about many problems facing our country
........ there are many more.......
set up quizzes, discussions on these......
Won't That be useful??

Use of the word 'revert'
by shubha asopa on May 08, 2011 09:37 PM  | Hide replies

One error is the specific to Indian English is the (incorrect) comman usage of the word 'revert' to mean reply/respond.
No other part of the world uses the word revert in this incorrect manner.
The word revert means to 'return to original state'... For eg. He was trying to wean him self off drugs but soon reverted to his old habits.

Revert does not mean reply.
