i am an indian (tho i was not born in india) student who has been studying in melbourne for 3 years. i know i will get some flak for saying this, but i believe that a vicious cycle is going on here.
some australians, definitely a minority of them, see foreigners as people who take jobs away from the locals, and this is especially true of the Indian students here as there are a large number of them in melbourne. in addition to this, the Indians tend to congregate together, speaking in Hindi or Punjabi, which irritates the Australians, who believe that if you are in their country, you should speak their language.
Indian students have also been identified as soft targets as they do not fight back when attacked.
racism, lack of education, lack of proactive investigation on the part of australians and their police along with insensitivity and lack of common sense on the part of Indian students here has cumulated in the situation we have today.
Everyone needs to change. The Australians should change their attitudes and the Indian students should understand that, being in a foreign country, they are expected to adapt to the country, not the other way round. nobody deserves to get beaten up, for ANY reason, but every party needs to re-evaluate their mentality and actions before any change can be made.

I don't see any foreigners, including Australians, change their ways when they come to India. They talk, dress and generally behave in ways that may not be culturally accepted here. Yet, they are not begrudged their holding on to their cultural identity. Would Australians beat up a group of French people conversing in French, since English is the language of Australia.
Why are people trying to rationalize this violence by giving reasons such as Indians convering in Hindi or being clannish. Ex patriates in India from other countries tend to stick to their own country men too.
This is just pure and simple animalistic violence born out of xenophoby.

A J:
Define "Australians".... there are more Indian students who have taken PR and become Australians, than the number of foreigners not respecting Indian culture that you have cited above... A few stray youth committing crimes on late night trains and pubs is no way significant of xenophobia.... if you follow the Australian news, follow it fully rather than keyword searching for "Indians"....

What do u mean by saying that the Indian students who will go to Australia must speak in English?which language do the Aussies speak when they come in India? This proves that though the Britishers have left India 60 yrs back yet they have left some cultural slaves who will be ashamed of speaking their own language. But I agree with u on the fact that Indian students follow gandhigiri when attacked. The Indian students must understand that this is 21st century,Gandhigiri has no value now,u talk of peace before ur attacker, this is not a sign of virtue but weakness.INDIAN STUDENTS MUST HIT THESE ATTACKERS WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT,THESE AUSSIES R NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF COWARDS,WHEN U HIT ON THEIR FACE THEY WILL SURELY RAN AWAY.MOREOVER IT HAS GOT A PROFOUND PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT ON THE COWARD RACISTS. I also agree with u that Indians should adapt themselves in the foreign culture
Did you see the Indian guy on the train??? One of the assailants? Australians are a collection of cultures - there appears to be a chinese guy there too. Evil has no face.
Why our students need to go all the way to other countries for quality education, why not India raises its standards of education and retain our students. Secondly, even in india many students get attacked on the name of ragging, caste, local-non local, rich-poor and many other factors, how far we r justifying these problems ?. Andhra pradesh gave 33MP's to India and got 4 useless MOS ministries, what abt this. In india we have more RACISM between north and south indians. We south indians send more MP's and ministries go to north ?

it is estimated that australia may be earning (that is profit) something amounting to Rs. 5000 crore anually from indian students, with present economy indian govt, should think to invest and provide same education and facility in india, we could be saving huge amount of prcious foriegn exchange
We can not blame aussies, as in old times it was the land of kala pani (where prisoners, murderers)were sent, so this kind of behavior is very much expected from them as it is in the genes of these Aussies, even their cricket players indulge in unfair practices while playing. What more you can expect from such people whose fore fathers were nothing more than hardcore criminals.

Inderdeep Singh:
It will give you a great satisfaction to note that there are probably thousands of those very same Indian students of the past who took PR and subsequently Australian citizenship.... So you are quite right in calling Australians as criminals.... ;-)
We guys can retaliate with equal violence and even without getting caught.. C'mon guys we have been doing this in India for many years.. Make a plan and thrash a white group of teenagers severely. They shud be taught a lesson.. I know Indians can do it tactfully. Afterall we are the land of Chanakya ..This will instill fear among the whites spine... Also, apply for some arms, ammunition for self defence.. Or get it from other sources..

U r absolutely right.Indians r known for their tolerance&gandhigiri.Have u ever heard any other nationality like the chinese who have been beaten up?No,bcs they retaliate with all their might when attacked. But planned beating is not advisable.Just catch hold 1 racist & break his nose, next time he will think twice before attacking any Indian.

Chanda:
If you knew who the attacker was, report him to the police.... where did this term "racist" come from by the way?... Did Aman Khachroo's parents complain of any racist predators roaming Indian campuses?.... and you are talking about late night train and pub crimes, not even university campuses in Australia...

What made you to joke on a serious issue like this.
If Raj Thakre can spread hatredness against his own citizens in Mumbai, then why cann't foreigners spread hatredness against Indians. If Indians themselves don't know to respect their own citizens, how can you criticise Australians, at least they are better than Maharastrian, they love their contrymen.

They already know that Indians already bark against their own countrymen in different part of India, how they will get united aginast foreighner. Let us kill all those guys in India who do regional politics, this will help India to unite.

This Australian incident is just an International version of the Thackery act.... Nothing Personal...
Its time we accept the ground realities of the new world order and the growing intolerence linked to socio economic conditions.it is slowly becoming clear that asians and indians in general are seen as a threat to the locals.
