THE ONLI WAY TO BE HAPPY IS TO HAVE OWN BUGINESS. IN CASE OF WORKING OR OTHARS U WILL EARN SALARI AND INCAME IS FIXED. IF U HAVE OWN BUGINESS, THEN U DETARMINE UR INCAME AND LIFESTILE.

I LIKE PIPLE WHO ARE INDEPANDANT AND SELF AND DOND LIKE PIPLE WARKING FOR PENUTS.

Hi Jaya,

Most Indian companies do not have appraisal system in place. Moreover, nepotism & favouritism is rampant in India, more so in Indian companies. The only remedy for you is to leave this company and join a good MNC. Please try to get into such a company in your field of work. Eventhough MNCs are not perfect work places, they are much better than Indian companies.

Are you happy with your appraisal
by Sanjeev Gupta on May 19, 2008 01:52 PM  | Hide replies

I have worked for different companies. The one which always had static turn over, the one which had ever increasing turn over and the one which is yet to break even. All have different philosophies for appraisals. If appraisal is only about money then I am neutral as I do not bother much about it as long as I am comfortble. I feel unappraised if my accountability and responsibilities do not increase every year. This year the accountability is by huge percent and money by some percent but that's what makes me happy.SO guys go out and enhance perception about you and your working. Everything will follow.

Looking at your views you will be in great demand in a typical baniya company. They will give you loads of responsibility and pay you peanuts.

Appraisal Vs Hike
by gopi krishna on May 19, 2008 01:48 PM

I think the first thing that we all need to remember is that there is a difference between appraisal and hike.
An appraisal is when the employee and the manager sit together and discuss the employee's performance in the past period (could be a year, quarter, month). The performance of the employee is graded (first by self and then by the manager). The idea is to identify how well the employee has done, what issues he faced and also discuss what he could do in the future to improve his performance and build his career.
Going by this, an appraisal is a "mandatory" process because how else can we improve our performance unless we get some good feedback.

A hike is different - based on the company's growth, general economy and in order to retain the best employees - companies would provide a hike. The amount of hike (%) depends on the company's available budget. For the distribution of the hike, the company may or may not use the results from the appraisal (high performer/low performer etc)

So we might get a very good appraisal but no hike at all if the economy is not good and the company is not going.

Many companies have now introduced the concept of variable pay wherein your salary depends on the growth of the company.

You Get What You Deserve !!
by Amulya Ratna on May 19, 2008 01:48 PM  | Hide replies

In any appraisal, you get what you deserve at the end of the year. Hard work is not the key!Smart work is what is required! This is not philosophy, you will have to understand what your boss(or may be your boss' boss)expect from you. Don't only stick to your style of working. It takes time to understand these things. You may have encountered two different bosses in different companies who are 180 degrees out of phase. One likes to be updated about everything, other wants you to take the call and proceed, update at end or when you are stuck.
Appraisal is pure science with a little bit of luck and biassing!Afterall you get what you deserve!
Lastly, if nothing works, go for a change without wasting time!!!

I work for a leading MNC IT company. The team I worked in was so pathetic that all the year they didn't give me any challenging to work and at the end of the year they put blame on me that I was no taking any intiative. Mid year I had raised concern about the kind of work I was given, but the company rules was such that I had no other way but to just weep on my situation. Later, i tried to bring in some innovativeness to my taks and all such attempts were supressed and discouraged by management. Finally, when it came to appraisal i had nothing much to say about my work s , I had to accept whatever "bheek" they put in my bowl. No wonder why Indian IT sector is doing this bad.

Appraisal--Do not expect anything
by RAVINDRAN DK on May 19, 2008 01:39 PM  | Hide replies

Friends,

I live outside India and work for an MNC....

I have had three appraisals in the past three years and I have made up my mind on the following aspects :

1. Work sincerly and have the worst and the best estimates of your increment.
2. Do not expect much from the Management.....but put forth your arguments strongly with valid points and data
3. If the management accepts then you will be happy...if it does not accept also do not worry as you have not had much expectations
4. Keep a watch outside the company about your market value
5. Do not take hasty decisions...think thrice before leaving your present job....don't think about salary alone..think about your future career and the chances available within your company

6. If you are getting a good offer outside, then switch immediately (but after consulting the same with your boss or super boss)

7. Having taken a decision, do not turn back and concentrate FOR the JOB ON HAND.

RE:My Project manager has cheated me. What should I do?
by Kamal Mohapatra on May 19, 2008 01:52 PM
Why don't you look for a change.See so long as you are below 30 and don't have responsibilities of a family or liabilities ,you can always go for a change. Now you don't have to think much for a stable company , or the position you are getting ,job security etc, as your risk appetite is more ,so I recommend go for a job change. Settle down with a secure company where you feel your work is acclaimed , you are better paid , and you are an asset to the company before you get married..

Always remember that your performance and the Company's growth are inter-related. The reason for higher overheads in the project may be true but due to improper planning by somebody else. Try to point out the fault on the correct person responsible for the loss. On the other hand, realise that if there is no sufficient growth of Company, you cannot get a growth too! If the project is really in losses, and even if you are only partly or not at all responsible for it, the achievement is everybody's baby. Don't get dejected so soon. Examine the situation, particularly see if the growth rate is similar for everybody. If you are sidelined, wait for opportune time, get a better job on hand and quit at a time when your PM will be left without any help. Quitting immediately is no solution.

TCS Infy and wipro all are same. Changing the company won't help u. Just show your projevct manager, it if u don't care for ur team members, how bad they can be. Also raise this issue in fornt of HR and show your dissatifaction and even keep the higher people in loop.

I am happy with my appraisal
by anand lingaiah on May 19, 2008 01:25 PM  | Hide replies

I am really happy with my appraisal.
I am not bluffing anything apart. Its all fact that too documented fact. To some extent u can agree that appraisal is biased but that is not whole appraisal system.
Its totally done upon ur performance and what time u delivered ?
Its all about how you market urself among urself, ur colleagues or system.
Be a smart worker but sometimes u shouldtake role of hard worker. Its totallu depends on ur marketing skill(not meaning going out and seeling......). There are lot of ways are there to market urself. This basically comes on hands on exp and emapthy and bit of sympathy.....
second thing - Don't ever show u are smarter than ur boss...... Even though if u are smart please hold it,,, release at the right time and the right place.
Global view "Boss don't like smart people in front of them".
