Appraisals - Fake
by Nikhil Parulkar on May 19, 2008 03:08 PM

Appraisals in any organisation boasting robust techniques..et al; are actually faking it.

Never there has really been a genuine appraisal in any organization(specifically in India). We all saw how Appraisals happened in ICICI Bank this year????(Appraisals of staff; Junior,Middle level happened publically). Staff too was caught unaware, Appraisal results were declared by ET & not by the Banks HR function. Sorry state of affairs in such a huge group.

Globally they have different standards; like in US what ever happens profits are your Appraisal figures. U show numbers & u get appraised. If not benched or pink slip.

So everywhere " APPRAISAL " has different meanings..we have to figure it out.

appraisal

seldom a sincere appraisal happens in even established organisations - and even if for the samke of records and GMS if they follow appraisal practice, then the manager/boss concerned takes this opportunity to pin point the rare failures of the year by the manager concerned and totally ignores the major achievements and contributions to the organisation. The appraisal practice is also very often taken advantage for settling scores of internal politics and vengence.
In fact, the procedure in appraisal is in four phases in a year and not an yearly one, where you set certain goals for the year along with its target dates. every quarter the goal is reviewed to know its progress and problems so that other divisions/departments which has a bearing on the said goal also could be appraised and a teamwork is put in to place to achieve the same. Sometimes, some of the goals are cancelled midway due to management decisions which also has a bearing in the said employees final appraisal.
In any case, appraisals do not have a direct bearing in arriving at the percentage of increment or other benefits.

In a well organised company which sincerely cares for its management and quality by practicing good management theories, would look at the appraisals towards achiving the company's targets and goals by clearly networking with other divisions and departments the connected activities. This way, every quarter they would analysis and review the progress of such goals and difficulties faced by certain departments/managers to address the same better and take appropriate decisions and approvals. This way, they will be able to monitor the performance and quality of each manger and connected departements so as to ensure the company works as a single unit in achieving the final goals rather than encouraging politics between the divisions and giving no room for any lame excuses for not achieving the targets/goals. In many such organisation the increments/promotions etc. are arrived at legitimately and sincerely to the deserving employees

It is a healthy tonic for both.Instead of separating it to employees and to employers, it should sound as company. The company has come up with new appraisal and has set new targets. It does not mean that new hard work for employees or new expenses for employers, it should be a news for the public or the clients what exactly the reflection of the efforts put by the company in the year completed and new challenge in the upcoming business.

ANNUAL APPRAISAL
by VINAYAK SARODE on May 19, 2008 02:53 PM  | Hide replies

If you do not get whatever reasonable expected rise(at least 60%),you better to leave for other organisation&prove your MERITS.Afterall, your life for earning is hardly 25 years while Company's life for earning or business may be 30,40,50 or even 100.So try to earn maximum in short time with ethics.
Gone are the days!when it was said "you live &also others to live".Now the version is YOU KILL OTHERWISE OTHERS WILL KILL YOU.this is the management jargon today because of MBA education,HIGH STRESS because of competition and non reachable target achiving approach.
PLEASE USE YOUR COMMONSENSE WHILE DECIDING,which is lagging in most of the cases taking consideration of YOUR OWN SWOT analysis.

Appraisals- Not always in conformity with your output !!
by prasoon on May 19, 2008 02:47 PM

Appraisals- Are not always in conformity with your output. After racking your brains for better and more economical output- and being successful in your efforts, it is needless to say that you expect your increment to justify your inputs.
In my case, the organisation Head, possibly, did not want to annoy my subordinates, with the result that I and they have been clssified in the same bracket.
I have now come to believe that just doing your job better does not suffice. You need to blow your own trumpet louder than the ones who sit back comfortably in their A/C chambers and leave the innovation part to their Boss cocooned in their belief that the credit would ultimately be divided equally and they would get their share of it--again equally.
In my case, I being the Production Head have to face the music, which is why I am more often found on the Production Floor to check the quality of output. My Managers probably are less interested and spend more time in moving around and gossiping with others-close to the power center. When pointed out they have a ready answer in " You are there on the floor so no point in interfering."
But the moment an intricate job is done, they pass the word around in the same centers taking credit for it.
What matters in our case is that either you hobnob with these guys who are comfortably close to the Boss and have his ears or get left out despite your efforts, integrity, ingenuity and innovations.
But the moot point then is 'efficiency in your

I think my company have selective amnesia.

In my company, if there is any work, company looks at me, when it comes to appraisals company simply ignores me.when asks they say it is company policy, it cannot give more than 2-3% increment. But others are getting more than 30-50%, and some even got 100%. IS this policy is applicable to me only???????????????
