why you worry ? You are a professor of history now retired now you can teach economics , Not politics ok ?
If Dalit is the creteria, why they opposed Mayawati. She is the most prominent of them. Mean while I am happy that Congress has shown the place to AP MPs and people who are like slaves to Dynasty
She graduated with a degree in law and a Masters in English. She joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1973 and served at embassies in Spain, United Kingdom and Mauritius. She was also Member, Indo-Mauritius joint Commission to Mauritius." [Wiki; quoting Indian Govt's Who's Who service on the official site

Casteism and Reservations will prevail in India **till** 85% of all registered marriages are inter-caste.

Shame: Intelligent guys underestimating dalit's intelligence

I have no comment on the competence or capability of Meera Kumar. But, by attributing reasons as dalit, woman, Bihar etc, the congress and more so the media is not only lowering the prestiege of the high office but is even using such a high office to divide the society even further. It is a shame that the same congress and the media that call themselves "Secular" and terms BJP otherwise is fragmenting the Indian society to tiny bits for their own narrow and selfish motives. This was perhaps the real meaning of Nehru's "Unity in diversity" - unity of congress and the media to fragment India. Jai ho!

I have been observing the secularism of congress since i was a boy; in the good old days when we had radio only there will be one hindu song, a christian song and a muslim song in the morning; we used to wonder why we cannot have even 15 minutes of religious songs for us; being secular mean be anti hindu, do not mind that you are born in this wonderful country and you belong to that; anyway i am happy that with the advent of internet and private tv channels our kids know now that Hanuman is the first and real warrior and great ladies like Sita and Dhroupathi were there in this ancient country.

You got it. In USA, secularism is there, but it means only one thing: At ALL levels (givt., court, etc.) the business is xtainity, taking oath is on bible, prayers are for cheesus. The govt. 'tolerates' others building a temple1 here and there I mean, may be a temple1 in one State, while there are thousands of churches in every State. That is secularism.

Dear Sir, please correct your self. She is a highly educated and well accomplished lady in her own way. had she been a non-politician person she would have exceled in her carreer without having a tag of a DALIT woman. She is a very soft spoken person and well consevent in English and other working laguages. So you need not worry about her linguistic capabilities. You should read your own message and try to get it corrected by a class II child.
By putting up Meera Kumar, who is a so-called dalit in Indian vote bank politics (A daughter of an ex-Cabinet Minister of India, late Jagjiban Ram, who also hold the credit of being central minister for longest period, and ex-IFS) for Lok Sabha Speaker position, the Congress wants to kill many birds in one stroke. It is a known fact that she can not run the house as efficiently as Mr. Somnath Chartterjee and P.A.Sagma in the recent past despite presence of rowdy elements. Of course, if one go by the standard of debates that last Lok Sabha had witnessed, he would not venture to say at least to respect his fair sense conviction that house was an institution of law makers. Meera Kumar would definitely fail to deliver if the scene of last Lok Sabha is repeated. But who will dare to do so sacrificing dalit votes. This is not as much to counter Mayabati as it is for all other parties who matter for dalit votes. If Meera Kumar fails in televised house proceeding, the Congress will go around propagating that a dalit is not allowed to work in a high position. Other aspect is: Mayabati, who largely depends on dalit votes of cow-belt that the Congress is looking for too for its political revival, has large number of upper cast MPs. In the past, it was seen that the MPs of BSP and SP were more turbulent. Now in the presence of Meera Kumar, it can be hope that house proceedings which started getting degenirated since the days of 'Sunjay caucus' of 1977-1979, will be different this time.
