learnings for NDA from this election 2009
by gaurang mittal on May 18, 2009 02:14 PM

what cong has done to win???
- bought media channels to raise issues : like Varun Gandhi (just after Election SC asked to UP govt to revoke NSA, why not before?? Kandhar but not to talk about bofors and mumbai blasts..
- bought new papers : same to raise issues against NDA..
- AAM ADMI: do nothing but just keep talking about AAM ADMI, you will votes..
- farm loans and minorities (spl M*slims(even tought they are 18% of indian population and growing at pretty good pace)
- keep making promises and blame opposition for not doing something. like black money(bcos NDA couldnot bring it back in five years then how come UPA do it?? simple funda dont try again which dint happen in past, even there are positive development in ties with international level on black money issues.)

It is Business Vs Journalism
by Venkat Manthripragada on May 18, 2009 01:23 PM

Television channels these days are more of modes of business than running the fifth estate. Bringing news to people now becamse a business and channels need to prove their point of bringing news first, spice up thier shows and bring in predictions and hang on to it if these predictions becomes correct because of any reason.
Role of television channels in shaping our society was discussed earlier and now and all the factors mentioned in the article are unfortunately correct.
Leaving along providing information value, sometimes these channels are engaged in cashing on individual sentiments. Recall the coverage of murder of a little one in Noida or arrest of Kanchi Swami or cases of MMS in schools. Television channels never showed the responsibility needed for such a powerful media.
Great job by Mr.Mahesh in highlighting the points so honestly and strongly.

TV chaneels and election reporting
by Srinivasan Iyer on May 18, 2009 12:53 PM

I completely switched off all channels during the elections. Even on the 16th except that I was interested in knowing the results, I refrained from falling in the trap of listening to Rajdeep or Arnab or anyone for their comments based on cub reporters trying to interpret the events. I agree that real news should be given twice or even thrice a day and comments or discussions once a day. Let us have real entertainment the rest of the day instead of these high flying prize winning commentators spewing their nonsense>

Good thought
by Manikantan Ganesh on May 18, 2009 12:45 PM

A thought provoking article, with matured views on news. None of the hullabulla is called for in these channels. Let’s take the first step to curb a news hungry society…

Bang on target
by kay on May 18, 2009 12:39 PM

Fantastically written. I fully agree that there should be only two news telecasts a day, Be it even half an hour's duration each. I remember the days when we used to wait for the 9 pm news on Star Plus. In case of special days like budgets or calamities/ great events there could be special news telecasts.

The TRP Brigade.
by kiran bagade on May 18, 2009 12:35 PM

The flavour of news cast has now assumed an entertainment perspective.
It can be informative, articulative and an opinion maker, ot atleast an influence towards making a decision.
The TRP battle has consumed one and all, without rancour, all the presenters and anchors , given the plethora of news channels that abound today.
Wordsmithy, is the order of the day. You have the likes of Arnab Goswami,Rajdeep Sardesai,Barkha Dutt waxing eloquent on issues that only add the element of the jugular, and expose the pre eminent morons that get invited to be the spokespersons of the political divide to the various chat shows.
Breaking News-First on this channel-Exclusive only to this channel are all an absolute miscarriage of the intended truth.
Mahesh Vijapurkar has appropriately put the spot light on the blah-blah brigade or groupies, who would do well to work on the semantics of presentation, not just from a entertainment or infotainment perspective, but also project analysis of deliberated thought being the focus of all such shows.

e-media - a joke!
by manish agrawal on May 18, 2009 11:53 AM

i must congratulate mr. mahesh for an excellent article.it really is an eye opener.pvt news channels have come a long way from the late 90's.the channels which only portrayed facts are now being able to 'develop stories' thanks to the race(TRP's).apart from NDTV every hindi channel shows paid -off programmes.if u have money they could cover ur family functions and u could be a celebrity!thanks to 'innovative journalism'as they call it.not to mention INDIA TV

Good article bad pathectic comments
by Srini on May 18, 2009 11:47 AM

A very good article. But look at the comments. Most of the comments are by BJP supporters targeting the media. I am not a BJP supporter but I hate the way these news channels are run. The media should be unbiased, accurate and should be devoid of any sensationalism. One thing to learn for the poor losers(BJP and their supporters) is how to "manage" media. Congress is a past master at it. BJP can do itself some good if it can do it. And also talk more about real issues than hindutva and ram mandir.
