Why Congress won
by Suraj Singh on May 18, 2009 08:32 PM

ast tracts of India has no access to potable water, 55 million people have been pushed... Read More below the poverty in the last 5 years. 182 of India's 602 districts are Naxal infested. We've a highly unstable neighbor on our Western border. The Army has a shortfall of 11,200 officers. UPA tried to communalise the Army by introducing reservations for Muslims. According to the Planning Commission of India, 600 million people — roughly half the population — are off the electric grid. Infrastructure is in a shambles. We're in the midst of a horrible recession. Cities faced 66 blasts in 20008 alone not counting 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
Now what logic is there for Congress to win? The EVMs can be tampered with.

Seeds for new political equation in future India
by abboral boral on May 18, 2009 08:30 PM

I am glad that 2009 election has shown the seeds of very few party system in India like in 60 s but the difference is that in 60s only few parties dare to enter politics as their career except INC who was a 100 years old party and was engaged in freedom movement of India and was a natuaral choice as a rular after 1947 .Congress ruled mostly ignorant ,illiterate underdeveloped India upto 1990 .Then came the liberisation in 1991 by Dr Manmohan Singh under able leadership of late PM p>v>Narsimha Rao and suddenly India started all round development and reached to a state now where India virtually dominating world economy .The only casualty is a multy party system and coalition politics emerged with great obstacle to development further .2009 has given a very clear signal of less party as only two major party like Congress and BJP has emerged with two clear seperate idiology of the two parties but on a common goal of India developments .Indian voters are now developed ,intellegent, litterate so a warning signal also coming for these two major parties that they should not take easy to Indian people now

The reforms of 1991 came about not because of the inner conviction of Singh or Narasimha Rao, but because there was simply no choice. We faced a severe balance-of-payments crisis, and the IMF loan we needed to save the country was conditional on reforms being carried out. And so they were, and worked wonderfully well. However, once that ... Read Morecrisis passed, the pace of reforms slowed. If he were a true intellectual, why are there no tomes on new economic theories that Singh got published after entering the professional world, after his Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth (Oxford University Press, 1964), unlike Keynes's never-ending contributions as a writer/philosopher? One of the reasons is documented. Singh tried to return to academics in 1990; though he was qualified as a professor, the Punjab University syndicate rejected his selection saying "his first love is politics rather than economics"

There is a talk in India - about the role played by Navin Chawla and his EVM machines. Being technocrat its possible to rig elections throuhg EVM -u press any button and it can still be programmed to show as congress (not completelyi,e not 100%) . Its time India like America retuns back to old balot box practice. Else lalu win from Saran (if you know) is a shocker to all.

Verdict of India is quite clear. Advani could not become prime minister, but what is the fate of the 'astrologer'Lalu. Now where is he. The massage of this election is clear. India is marching ahead to a bi-polar system. The days of those leaders and small regional parties are over, who were indulged in blackmailing and politiccal bargaining. Now what happened to Lalu, Paswan, Amarsingh, Mulayam? Voter has snached their bargaining power. What happened to left? One must see the verdict in to-to. Dr. Manmohan Singh has got free hand (?) to take decision as the Prime Minister. But how long ? Shri Rahul Gandhi is prime Minister in waiting.

Haj Subsidy
by sq kazmi on May 18, 2009 08:18 PM  | Hide replies

I read in many of the messages that Haj subsidy is a great burden on Indian Economy. Please look at the figures.
A Haj pilgrim availaing the Haj Subsidy pays Rs.12000 towards to and fro air fair for Jeddah.Rest of the fair is paid by the government. Govt also fixes evry year the No. of Haj pilgrims who can avail this benefit. For year 2008 it was 110000 persons.
Now if you check the current round trip air fair rates for Jeddah, you will find the rates for economy fair are in the rage of Rs.15000 to Rs.20000. Even if we do not consider the improved economics of dedicated confirmed passenger load, the difference in fair per person paid to Air India by the government should be Rs. 3000 per person.
Therefore total cost of haj subsidy in a year should be about Rs. 33 Crore which is very much different from the figures of Rs 550 Crore, given as reference. If the figure of Rs.550 crore is correct, then it smacks of some gross mismanagemnt on behalf of the involved authorities.

If we compare the financial assistance paid to Kailash Mansarovar yatris (Rs 25000 per person)it far outweighs the cost of Haj Subsidy per person.

This is not to say that I am in favour of any subsidy given in the name of relegion, and for that matter any reservations too. It is just to kepp the things in right perspective that I have tried to compare the two above.

Personally I think there should not be ANY discrimination or bias for or against, based on relegion. Haj and Yatra, subsidies must go.

Mr. Ramesh.
Actually I googled for the information and the amount Rs 25000 really seems incorrect (although one thread lead to this figure comparing this with the subsidy given by Gujarat Govt) in that the subsidy given by the central govt is Rs 3250 per person. Another search gave this value which is paid to the authorities arranging yatra.
My apologies. There is no edit button to edit the original message.

Mr Baid , Pl be informed that pilgrims pay for their travel although spl trains and buses are arranged by govt. Melas bundobast by govt authorities is only in terms of arranging police to manage crowds and some toilets here and there. There is no expenditure on the pilgrims by govt. In fact the govt gains revenue from the pilgrims who utilise the services during melas. Do you know that hundreds of crores of funds from Tirupati temple are being siphoned off by congress govt in AP for govt programmes. These funds are offerings from the pilgrims to hundi. Pl understand what is going on.
