Lots of unnecessary sentiments are aroused by media adding to already existing confusion. So what if Good Friday is not a holiday in Gujarat. With majority of the population being christians..many institutions in the US do not declare a holiday....
Maybe people should learn to work and not whine about holidays. There is plenty of vacation time for Indian public service employees anyway and they could take a day off to celebrate good friday if they wanted to.
It is highly ridiculous on the part of the Gujarat goverment to ban Good Friday as public holiday, this shows the highly fanatic & fundamentalistic attitude of the ruling goverment in Gujarat. The Christians not only in Gujarat should boycott the forthcoming Lok Sabha election but Christians going to polls in their respective state should also show their solidarity by bycotting election as well. The BJP government should realise the immense contribution the Christian community makes to this nation of ours.
but do you guys also ever publish similar news items pertaining to another 'minority' commonunity called hindus in North Eastern states of India???
pongal is not a holiday in shillong, baisakhi is not a holiday in aizawl. i never saw news pertaining to these in rediff.com.
and west bengal declares holidays for most of the major festivals in india. did you ever put an article patting their back for this good gesture? no, you did not!
get real, guys? rise above popular journalism. be fair to all the communities/state governments.
in journalism there is life beyond 'number of page views', my friend.
When countries that are predominantly christian dont have a mandatory holiday on good friday, why should india have one? All these protests are election oriented.
good friday does not happen to be a holiday in a lot countries where the population is predominantly christian. so i think this is a move in the right direction as we need to cut down on the number of national holidays in India. But we must cut the hindu holidays too
