There is provision in the constitution that each state government can publish its own holiday list for each year. This action of Gujarat govt. might incur angst amongst a section of the public , however taking a view of state govt. holidays , Ramnavami was not a state holiday in Karnataka ! In essence if an employee wishes to celebrate the occassion of a deity he/she worships in the true sense then he can always apply for a leave in advance. However with the spirit and motto in which birthdays/jayanti's of spiritual/national leaders is celebrated by most of us , like going for picnics or having fun, it would be indeed a welcome step to banish giving such holidays , thus increasing productivity at work places.
Holidays are declared on religiously significant days since attendance in offices and factories is likely to be thin in view of large number of people taking off from work to participate in the festivities. Since Good Friday is not observed by a large number of people, there will be no large scale impact on attendance in offices and factories. So, by making it a restrictive holiday, the Gujarat Government has not committed a grave crime. There is much ado about nothing.
This is against the constitution of India.India is a secular, democratic country and trying to enforce such laws is against the preamble. This is not only a violation of the constitution but also the basic priciples of our democracy.
It's really pity that we Indian in india are paying more attention to Good friday not being a holiday in Gujarat.
But let me share something with you all. I am an Indian living in USA but we don't have good friday as holiday and I haven't seen even a single american raising a question on this.
