Ganguly vs Dhoni
by Naveen Chandran on Sep 05, 2012 04:58 PM

A captain is as good as his team - and dhoni got the best Indian team from Dravid who were in a winning streak - but just had a bad world cup. Dhoni grabbed it with both hands - remember youraj sixes - he was in his prime form - zahir's ball was talking - R P sing was bowling in 140's - Gambir sehwag opening pair was the talk of the town - Dhoni utilised it completly - where as Ganguly made this team - but again had a good quality batsmen in Dravid tendulkar lakshman - this was not enjoyed by azhar or previous captains - Still I feel Ganguly (Maybe he is biased) but still was a captain who acted as per the needs - Dhoni on the other hand just has one formula - attack with his spinners - not as aggresive as Ganguly - This is my opinion

and also making laxman feel insecure when his own form was poor, fighting with chappel( although chappel is equally rersponsible), and playing slowly in WC 2007 so that team looses are also his achievement.

googly?

What qualities in Ganguly make him great captain?

1. Did he enjoys trust of all players in his team?
I don't think so... He is divisive and biased to some extent...

2. Is is open to criticism?
If so why chapell episode... you better know yes or no...

3. Is he not egoistic and receptive to all?
you better know yes or no...

Note: A leader should win acceptance of all his team members by trust and performace...

I doubt he did it...

1) Why is his record so good (Indian context) if he did not have support of players. In which interview did Ganguly blame on his players for a loss or bad show
2) Chappel came to ruin Indian cricket. Good that Ganguly did not listen to him. All senior players lost form during his period
3) I really don't understand this...Do you mean to say (forget Ganguly) stars like Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman will have no egos and pride? they will be like a Doormat like a Clerk in a marwari company? If you understand captaincy Manmanagement is 70% of Captaincy

He has reasonable record because he got one of the best team, india ever had...
Yet his record is no better than dhoni's, who got slightly aging team, with key player past their peaks?
do u mean pride and ego, one and same?
And lastly googly was in really terrible form and all Chappel suggested is go ur batting right?
I don't understand does coach have no right to say it?

you are absolutely right. whatever you say, blind supporters of ganguly will not understand. Ganguly had the best team with players in their peek and hungry for success. Dravid, laxman and kumble all played for team, and I don't think that managing them is a problem, Dravid willingly did everything to team including opening, when you have a willing soldeir like that what management you require. Besides management was done by john wright. Ganguly himself was a poor manager and probably egoist himself.

1. Ganguly's form as well as captaincy record was going down since 2004 after he backed out of nagpur pitch.
2. pride and ego are different and I don't think that especially dravid and laxman had egos which needed to be managed specially, kumble and dhoni also managed them.
3. after removing ganguly from captaincy, India's test record continued to improve with series wins in west indies, england, newzeland and we claimbed to No. 1 spot. So ganguly as a captain was not important.

The article is all but a joke
by amit lowada on Sep 05, 2012 04:43 PM  | Hide replies

The only argument which Ganguly supporters use frequently is that he supported players like sehwag, yuvraj blah..blah.. Now Dhoni has Virat, Pujara, Ashwin and Ojha in his kitty so no question that Ganguly is a better leader than Dhoni..I guess you didn't see IPL where Ganguly's leadership skills had gone for a toss....Moreover for a team (India) which was kicked out of WC2007 in the first round itself it is a big achievement to win the next WC2011....no argument can take this achievement from Dhoni....

So you are telling me that Ganguly earned the trust of his players (ask Narendra Hirwani and Murali Kartik) and his coach (ask Greg Chappell)

Come on buddy - give him the credit he deserve - Being biased - every Indian has these qualities - if you believe in one player and if we support him during his bad times - you cannot call him biased - by giving yovraj or harbajan a chance - ganguly was not doing any personal favour nor dhoni when he supports raina or others - Its just that they believe in these players and if they perform can win matches for india

Ganguly is one of the best captain India has had..
by Saiyog G on Sep 05, 2012 04:25 PM  | Hide replies

When Ganguly was made captain, cricket was in a big mess after the match fixing scandal and players were suspended. There were no stars in the cricket team and Ganguly built up the team and competitive spirit right from scratch. although he may not be so cool as Dhoni, he is a real fighter and will fight for his team. Dhoni on the other hand got a ready made team which Ganguly had contructed so well and just continued from there...and yes...nowadays, there are no competitive or strong teams other than SA or England. But at Ganguly's time there were much stronger teams. Dhoni is just eating from a golden plate..thats all..

You r right. Ganguli is the best captain and during his time the other teams were quite strong. Australia by Steve waugh, England by Nazeer Hussain, pakistan by Akram and so on. Dhoni got ready teams made by Ganguli. Ganguli was approachable by his team mates. Dhoni is hard headed. He is selfish.

Whose plate did Ganguly eat from that he got players of the caliber of Dravid, Tendulkar, Srinath, Kumble (all of them at their peak).. Dhoni got a team..let me guess from where did Gambhir, Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina, Sreesanth, Kohli (all WC2011 winners) born....of course not from Ganguly's plate..Dhoni won T20 WC2007 with a bunch of unknown players and nobody gave them a chance especially because it was played in South Africa..That's the fighting spirit of Dhoni..

Both regular and 20-20. Everybody else failed, apart from Kapil dev. So end of discussion. Kapil Dev is also an excellant captain.
