he is not only better than doni but among the best captains in the world.. fastest to reach 5000 runs 5000 7000 8000 9000.. earlier indian teams played not to loose .. it was ganguly who instilled a hope of win in indian team.. it`s amazing how ppl easily forget what a great players did... its surely ought to be out of sight.. out of mind.. and ppl posting against ganguly just love to hate him.. no player has ever been able to chave true followers like ganguly..accept this..

what Ganguly did does not matter... was he able to win India world cup inspite of two best chances?... The answer is clearly no... Dhoni did it.. and that ends the story.. Ganguly was a selfish player who never respected his colleagues..
I think the author/coloumnist forgot what happened from 2005-2007. It was a gift of Greg/Ganguly spat. Greg was trying to be pro & wanted Ganguly to Iron out his batting, while our Mr. Captain was busy politcising this issue. He contributed well initially, but only when he had everything to command. He could not take critcism, could not play with team spirit. In 2007 he had left team to newer low, because its easy to rise, when you've nothing to loose, but very difficult to rise back when your ego/prestige is bruised, your reputation sullied. It was all Ganguly's gift & he left the sinking ship for Rahul Dravid who was blamed for 2007 world cup debacle. It was from this point where the team was actually brought back by Dravid/Kumble & ofcourse Dhoni, because in the immediate aftermath of 2007 debacle, he had a team sans stalwarts(with exception of Sehwag/Yuvraj & himself). He not only led the side but also won the Cup, now thats called Captaincy.

under dravid we won something like 17-18 odis in a row while chasing...and all this happened thanks to new generation players... i think ganguly was out of the team all this while...
Agree with the article Ganguly's tenure was the best for Indian cricket. However on two ocunts need to differ from the article: 1. The real turn around for an Indian team happened with Azhar. He may have been inarticulate at best but possibly that and his own self effacing attitude made it possible for players come into their own and people like Kumble flourished. Add his fantastic batting, his contribution can not be ignored being the precursor to later day Ganguly's successes. 2. Greg Chappel or no Greg Chappell, Ganguly had to quit at the time he did; he was virtually non performing against any quality opposition by that time. Greg did ruin other aspects of Indian cricket including people like Irrfan Pathan and overall Indian dressing room atmosphere.
It is now unanimously agreed that the Golden Age of Indian cricket (which is now officially over) commenced in March 2001 when India beat Australia after following-on in the second Test at Kolkata. From then till June 2006 when India won a series in West Indies for the first time in 35 years on the back of another series-defining performance from Dravid, he was indisputably the leading man of Indian Test cricket. Eight out of Dravid’s ten highest impact batting performances of his career are from this period. Two are after this period, interestingly none before it. This tells a very clear story – how Indian cricket changed between 1996 and 2011, and the hugely significant contributions Dravid made towards that change. And it is on this count that Rahul Dravid makes his real mark. His count of 8 series-defining performances in Test cricket is not just the highest for any Indian Test cricketer, it is the highest by any batsman in all of Test cricket history. This is what makes Rahul Dravid such a giant even in international cricket.
Re: Rahul is the real hero, it's not sachin, ganguly or Dhoni.

Absolutely agree. As Azhar's success was built upon Tendulkar and Kumble Golden years, Ganguly's success owed a lot to Rahul's differentiating performances in adversity or otherwise.
Ganguly was a shining captain of Indian cricket team Team, very planned & succussive captain than Dhoni. I Think Ganguly is batter than Dhoni. dhoni won more matches by his good Luck not by applying technic & plann.
once again sucking up to nawabs..Pataudi was an ordinary player, with very ordinary accomplishments as a Captain...doesnt even compare with Ganguly & Dhoni in achievement.

Pataudi played his Test cricket with just one good eye and was still one of the best batsmen in India. Before his eye injury he had the potential of being one of the all time greats. He was recognised as one of the best fielders in the world(unlike Ganguly) and molded Indians into an Indian Team.Incidently, he felt that Dhoni was the best captain India ever had.Pataudi was a class act and far superior in every respect to Ganguly.

indian team used to win many times under azhar...before ganguly it was azhar who showed india winning ways...
it was under azhar that dravid, laxman, sachin, kumble, harbhajan, srinath, ganguly himself played...
the successful team was built by azhar and ganguly just reaped the benefits of it...

only before ganguly sachin an atrocious captain made mess of azhar's team....and made it look very ordinary....but when azhar was made captain again india once again started winning...
it was just the team that azhar built that ganguly inherited...

But the fact remains that Azhar was a cheat and despite being Indian captain, went on to claim that he was being hounded because of his religon. That he is now a Congress MP only speaks of the bankruptcy of morals in India
