You can speak stats and facts.but the way team india was in 2000 with match fixing and sachin saga as captain,no one else could have handled the team neither dravid nor kumble.they were thorough professionals and not leaders.dada's form would have slumped but indeed he was best captain in unleashing young talents.

Pataudi is good talk of town then. Ganguly was good in the early days. later on ganguly lost confidence during the tour of zimbabawe. Dhoni is the best leader because he nurtures great finishers like kohli, raina, and few others.
Dhoni has not won a single test in England and Australia. On the other hand, Ganguly has won both in England and in Australia. The home matches on doctored pitches do not matter at all in terms of technical competence. Even there, Ganguly has performed well against world class teams.
Steve Waugh build up an Australian team and after Waugh Ponting did his job. Same Ganguly build up a killer instinct in Indian team with john wright and now dhoni did his job.

azharuddin built up a winning indian team and after him tendulkar made a mess of the team and made it look ordinary...azhar came back and india were back to winning ways...
it was an indian team of dravid sachin laxman ganguly himself bhajii kumble srinath etc. that azhar built and gangulyl got a ready to use team....
