Add to that he never won a single tournament except for Natwest (which was a 3 nation cup) This may also come as an equal surprise as the above figures given by Anindya.

very true under ganguly india reached many finals but won only rarely...inspite of the fact there were rarely new comers in his team and he had his team full of so called senior and legends...

on the other hand dhoni won may series and tournaments and he did it mostly with new generation players and many times the main (new or old )players were injured or unfit and he had to do with 2nd choice players...

ganguly owes his success to dravid
by pup on Sep 06, 2012 12:05 AM

most people forget that most of ganguly's success as a captain especially overseas came because of dravid and laxman...dravid made sacrifices like wicketkeeping and batting at odd positions for the sake of team....

Overseas tours

Mahendra Sigh Dhoni has been completely whitewashed in overseas tours. Nawab of Ppataudi (Mansur Ali Khan) and Sourabh Ganguly are geniuses who performed like champions with average teams. Dhoni is an over-rated captain and wicket-keeper batsman, performing below club standards in overseas tours.

But still Dhoni got India No 1 test ranking, T20 world cup and not to forget the long lasting one day world cup .. which your so call ganguly could not bring home inspite of the fact that he had again one of the best team ( tendulkar, dravid, sehwag, kambli, kumble, robin singh, etc etc etc)... Results are results... you ppl keep debating on who was best... Dhoni keeps on proving he was always the best..!

I agree with Sameer. Not to undermine Ganguly's captainship, the team failed it really expected to perform. Moreover, the spat between Greg and Ganguly was ugly all over. One should not forget that at different times, different people have excelled. That doesnt make one greater than the other. End of the day, the results matter.

Kapil's devils were the best once upon a time, winning world cup when the team came from behind. Ganguly's team was the best when they went into finals against Aussies in South Africa in world cup and we had one of the worst defeats ever against Aussies.

End of the day, result matters and Dhoni did get results, while gaining admiration from yougsters in the team. The so called seniors having blocking the place in Indian cricket team, not allowing youngsters to come in.

Let us think about... If Sachin was not allowed to come in the team at the age of 17, would he have achieved what he has done so far. Now people like him are not performing and also blocking the place for other youngsters who could not come into the team.

dhoni supports his players, young and experienced, to the hilt,
by vinay on Sep 05, 2012 11:34 PM  | Hide replies

dhoni supports his players, young and experienced alike, to the hilt, particularly when they are going through a lean period....

but the problem is that he supports untalented players to the hilt who r his chamchas n ignores talented players. examples like rohit, jadeja, raina.

Yes, he has not supported seniors when they failed and supported juniors when they have shown promise. Do you think, if Sachin was not supported by his seniors when he was failing miserably, would have reached so far where he is now. It is better to build young team, rather than just supporting seniors just for the sake of it.

Check the above link, please check the test series won (not match) by ganguly out side india ( check location column), then you people will come to know, he has won only against bangladesh, pakistan and school team (Zimbabwe), in that pakistan series Multan test dravid was captain, although dravid is most under rated captain but still he won two test series in england and west indies

comparision
by rohit Kumar on Sep 05, 2012 10:28 PM

A hully balanced comparision between the 2 would be possible once Dhoni's innings as captain ends, however as of now Ganguly is still ahead. Dhoni in order to go down in history as the greatest captain must do 2 things 1 leave an enduring legacy in form of well developed youngsters who would be able to serve the team for many years to come. Secondly have a higher winning percentage in test matches abroad which is going to be much more tougher as nowadays due to excess weightage on T 20 cricket test cricketers are not developing so it wolud be tough to do well abroad in tests
