THE LEGEND THAT WAS DRAVID
by Nilanjan Sen on Jul 05, 2012 11:42 AM

Mere statistics is not the only criterion for judging a batsman. We should also judge a batsman by the innings he played and how it helped in the team's cause. Going by that yardstick, Dravid to my mind has played a much more important role than many of his predecessors. One must also remember that he was called upon to play an active role, when the pitch was at its most difficult or there was no opening batsman to play the role.

If you can't appreciate talent and honesty anywhere-sports or politics it's a flaw in your character and not the people whom you pour venom on.
The faster you understand, the better it is for you.

If you are happy barking up the wrong tree, please continue,Dravid is not going to become a smaller person.

Best Test batsman? What a joke!
by Dire Straits on Jul 05, 2012 10:35 AM  | Hide replies

Aus and S.A. had the 2 best attacks during Dravid's time. His performances against them -

vs Aus - 38.67
vs S.A. - 33.83

in Aus - 41.64
in S.A. - 29.71
in S.L. - 33.10

Now compare it with the great Sunny Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.

The West Indies has the best bowling attack during Sunny's time. In fact they had the best bowling attack in history with the fearsome attack of Malcom Marshall, Joel Garner, Andy Roberts and Michael Holding.

Sunny Gavaskar vs W.I. - 65.45 (ave), 13 tons
Sunny Gavaskar in W.I. - 70.20 (ave), 7 tons

Let's moce to Sachin Tendulkar. The Aussies and the South Africans had the best attacks during his time, the same attacks that Dravid faced.

vs Aus - 57.30
vs S.A. - 42.46

in Aus - 53.20
in S.A. - 46.44

Mind you, the above data are not some blind opinions by some one eyed fan, they are facts and figures that display a clear picture of how good Dravid was against the better attacks of his time.

It isn't by just averages that you measure a player. In the time frame that you have mentioned India has won only two test matches in australia. In both of the test matches Rahul dravid was the top scorer. He has helped India win many Test matches abroad where India hasn't historically won.Of His All test hundred's only 4(of this 3 where in last england tour) where in loosing cause. To me Dravid's ability win natches is the most important thing than his 13200 run.Tendulkar unfortunately can't claim much in this regard in test cricket.

Sachin always had the cushion of either sehvag or Dravid coming to bat above him.In dravid's case he came almost in the first over .The situations cannot match the statistics in this case

We're talking of a huge gap in those averages, Dravid's averages against the better bowling attacks of his time are outright pathetic. It's not that Dravid averaged slightly less than Tendulkar, the difference is huge. Tendulkar on the other hand has performed brilliantly against the same attacks.

Yes, you are right. My most favourite cricketer is Rahul Dravid without doubt. But I would rate Sunny and Sachin above him on any account. They both are born legnends. Dravid is a mere mortal.
