What ails Team India?
by Charlie Schembri on Jan 19, 2012 02:57 AM

Sehwag, Gambhir, Ishant and probably VVS..
VVS need to retire but the oprners are useless over the last year as well..

Since 2008, Sehwag is batting at 21.09 average away from subcontinent. Do we need an opener like him who fails more often then not and put lots of burden on the remaining batsmen?

Dhoni's attitude
by suhail khan on Jan 19, 2012 02:31 AM  | Hide replies

The captain is hardly interested in neither improving his game no his team mates.. His lax attitude of not supporting fast pitched in Indai shows his dedication tot he game.. the team is filled with youngsters who just want to earn money..thats it

Whatever can ail team India ???
by Biswajit Khandai on Jan 19, 2012 01:31 AM  | Hide replies

Commercial cricket is a cancer for all other sporting activity in India. Whatever can possibly ail team India ???

Unless cricket is banned in the country for 10-15 years, the country will always be laughing stock when it comes to real world sports, that most countries play and excel in.

Most of it
by krishna sumanth on Jan 19, 2012 01:15 AM  | Hide replies

Most of the times, we think that the Indian cricket is about the 20-25 players who get to represent India. I feel training them or changing the selectors is not going help things. I may say we need Pujara, Rahane to replace Sachin and Dravid. But, my conscience says they will need lot of time to replace them in true sense. The fact is that our domestic cricket is so weak that we fail to get good replacements, unlike teams like Australia. Here are my points (in addition to what've been mentioned in this article)

1) Ranji trophy is a weak system. How can there be 20-30 teams playing in a competition that is likely to be the feeder system for the national team. Instead, players should represent only their zones (fed by state level tournaments like Ranjis). There are only 2-3 tournaments where players represent their zones, but that's not enough. Even now, it doesn't make sense for some one like Yousuf Pathan playing against a team like Orissa and scoring a 200. He should be (and just be) playing against stronger teams all through the year.

2) Players should be allowed to have 2-3 seasons in the counties, Australia, etc. We know how players like Zak, Sachin, RD matured after playing in the counties. They should do that before they reach 20-21.

3) Do qualitative analysis on how small countries like Srilanka and Newzealand are producing genuinely good teams over the years. It may throw up a few things on how the administration can be improved.

4) Develop profitable national level cricket schools like 'Indian institutes of Cricket' where students get to learn Cricket (thought it should be for all the games). They get to study as well play. They may end up as decent players, but will have some back up too. They can end up as local coaches, players (Club/state/zone/India), Umpires, administrators, etc. People getting admitted can pay the fee.

5) Allow foreign players/coaches in the domestic cricket beyond the IPL with some restrictions. They can just improve the overall quality.

WHAT AILS INDIAN TEAM
by sunil kalu on Jan 19, 2012 01:12 AM

I think that changes have to be made in the batting department and fresh blood has to be inducted. Moreover when Harbhajan has been dropped because of his poor form and has been advised to perform in DOMESTIC CRICKET SCENE and then he can be considered for selection, then, Why i different yardstick has been set for batsmen who have been failing consistently. If such oppurtunities are provided to youngesters i am confident thatthey can cement their place in next 10-12 test innings. Why we are not looking for future. The tough decisions have to be made by the Selectors only. The coach has to also involve strategically, by shifting the batting order, bowlers or advising on field placings. I think Losing is BAD But hardly using our brains is "CRIMINAL"

We have greater tasks to do
by Pide Piper on Jan 19, 2012 01:04 AM  | Hide replies

There used to be a time when Cricket was a unifying factor for ignorant and hopeless Indians. It was a window to express nationalistic feelings and find respite from despondency.

The story is no longer the same. Economic reforms and globalization have opened many avenues to prosperity which were hidden from us for a long time. We have several ways to chase our dreams, utilize our creative energy, explore the unknown and try to unravel the bigger meaning of life beyond the Cricket field.

As a channel to release collective emotions, Cricket has played it's part, and played it very well, when there was none. But like every good thing, Cricket's utility has come to an end (or nearing the end, to be fair). Today, we do not need a Cricket match to prove our superiority over Pakistan, we do need a Cricket match to feel proud about our country. It may matter for Pakistan, since they are worse than they were 20 years before and exhibiting all essential qualities of a utterly failed state.

Instead of obsessed about a product which has passed it's "use by date", we should now invest our creative energy into greater quests like sanitization of political culture, eradication of social discrimination, instilling improved civic senses, eradicating poverty, spreading education to each and every corner of our country, teach sense of discipline to everyone in society and all above, envision all citizens to know what is it to be an Indian.

I agree with you totally on the need to improve our society, but saying Cricket is over, is way overboard. Human beings like tribal culture; they love and support their tribes in the form of sports, like Cricket in subcontinent, foot ball in Europe, baseball in US, etc. Please provide your input on how we should improve our Cricket team, may be by firing our selectors and the people who select those selectors, by hiring Indian coaches by investing heavily on them.

You cannot win a contest with fear of failure in mind. Before you can beat opponents at the field, you need to win over the fear in your mind. Why do our so-called superstars need to hide behind designer pitches at home, whenever they see a strong pace attack? Why can't they face opponents head on without affecting the playing conditions?

Win over your mind. You may lose a few times initially, but you will become stronger in the long run. In a nutshell, fear of failure is our greatest opponent, not Australia or England.
