VVS Laxman was a gentleman cricketer without stardom...never after money / girls...never seen in ads or TV dance programmes like Dhoni/Yuvraj/Harbhajan do....great silent performer-The saviour of the Indian team- 4 th innings-specialist who won many matches single handedly when in a crisis.

IT IS GOOD FOR HIM. HE CAN DO SOMETHING USEFUL FOR HIM. CRICKET IS A GAME FOR BOMBAY, NORTH INDIANS WHO ARE EXPERTS IN MAKING MONEY THROUGH THE GAME AND SUPPRISING OTHERS ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM THE SOUTH.INDIAN CRIKET DURING THE PAST 40 YEARS IS NOTHING BUT THE UNINSPIRING STORY OF GAVASKAR, TENDULKAR,KAPIL, GANGULLY AND NOW THE FADING DHONI. LAXMAN FORGET THIS NONSENSE. Golan

VVS Laxman was not just 'one of the true champions of Indian batting' but 'the true champion of Indian batting' His epic 281 won the match for India after Australia enforced the follow-on at Eden Gardens. None of the 'batting greats' of India could do anything like this-not even Sunil Gavaskar or Sachin Tendulkar. He scored in pressure situations in Test matches -in 4th innings many times to secure a win or draw for India. His 281 was the first 250 plus score by an Indian. Previous best was Gavaskar's 236. After his 281, Indian cricket team became a force to reckon with. His 281 is ranked in Wisden's list of 10 all-time great innings..only Indian to figure in top 10 innings list

VVS Laxman, no doubt is a very special batsman for Team India. However, sad but true he had his own limitations. He can not be called a complete cricketer. He was good at slip position as fielder but in any other position (I don't think any captain has shown courage to field him in those positions) he was mediocre. Secondly he was a very poor runner between wickets because of which he not only lost many runs for himself but also was a liability to his partner at the crease. The Team itself could have scored more runs in aggregate if he had run quickly. Of course his fighting capacity and never say die attitude at the crease made him an important member of the team. Wish him good luck in his future.

What a joke! Not a complete cricketer!!! Mr Nayak, fielding at slip is among the toughest positions, because, the ball is at its fastest. As for running between wickets, none of the Indians, except Tendulkar, Yuvraj, Dhoni and Kaif were/are good, so where does the question of VVS being a liability arise? So please understand and talk. VVS had a great understanding of the game, which compensated for all your so-called failings.

VVS was never a great ODI player. Like Dravid, VVS was most suited to the classical version of the game-Test Cricket. Nayak did not belittle VVS who is truly one of India's greats, but just made a few pertinent observations.

Very balanced annalysis Mr. Nayak. VVS was a great Test batsman, one of the FAb 4 comprising Saurav, Rahul, Sachin & himself. All of them have played over 100 Tests fro India, building the nucleas of the Indian Test Team along with Kumble!

I don't think it is a balanced analysis. What exactly is a "complete cricketer". Only Gary Sobers and Kallis can claim to be "complete cricketers".

I bet even Bradman was not a great fielder or runner between wickets. So does it mean even he is not great?

You judge a player by his main role. His main role was a batsman and he performed that with aplomb. If he had been at No 3 after the Kolkata test, he would have amassed lot more hundreds and runs.

Australia (who know their cricket like no one else) always believed that VVS should bat at #3 and rated him far higher than RD. Even I believe that VVS would have made a terrific #3 which would have won India many more games. Unfortunately his career coincided with RD and SRT and even Dada due to which he had to bat #6 and #5 most of his career. #5 only recently after Dada retired.

So don't judge him so frivolously.
