ENDANGERED AND EXTINCT SPECIES-KUMBLE,DRAVID & VVS
by shivani valluri on Aug 20, 2012 05:25 PM

As far as class goes , he is in the same bracket as Lara, Tendulkar, Dravid and Kallis More than all the stats what mattered most to a die-hard cricket fan like me was the grace he brought to the game. How can one ever quantify that ?! How can you teach or coach any youngster 'aesthetics' and 'grace'?! One can understand why the IPL-watching public does not need him ! Sehwag calls him the 'sai baba' of the team. Only a man of such high principles would have refused the low-hanging fruit of a farewell test at home, against a lowly NZ side, with the prospect of crossing 9000 run mark. But is it surprising when the same player turned down the 'icon' status in IPL ?

reason
by sreedhar reddy on Aug 20, 2012 10:04 AM

the reason for this surprise decision is very clear. Laxman wanted to end his career after one final go at the english and aussies. He was training very hard for this battle. But the selectors told him clearly that the NZ series would be his farewell series. Being the gentleman, he could not take this insult and decided to step down. He also give his replacement a chance to gain confidence against the weaker NZ before taking on the stronger aussie and english teams. Laxman has always shown his attitude of keeping team before self, even when he declined the icon player status in IPL.

EHD OF VERY VERY SPECIAL INNINGS INDEED
by damodaran mohan on Aug 19, 2012 04:16 PM  | Hide replies

It is really sad that we cannot watch the magic of the ‘wristy’ flicks of very very special Laxman for one last time. Any way we must respect his decision as all good things in life has to come to an end one day. He will always be remembered for the way he virtually made a habit of coming up with match saving knocks at critical times to take India out from difficult situation, Further, most of his big knocks have helped India win the Tests. At the start of his career he was a bit inconsistent going in and out of the national side but after the memorable knock at Eden gardens along with Dravid which turned the tables on the Aussies he never looked back. His stylish game will be missed for ever and it remains to be seen who is going to take over the “Rescue” act from the saviour Laxman. Ideally it would have been better if Sachin had also retired along with Laxman giving more room for trying out youngsters towards rebuilding a new TEST side.

Millions of aspirants!!! Name any one who can fill Sachin's place if his retirement comes up. Are you not happy about Sachin's records. His personal records (as you say) still helped India win so many matches. Please understand cricket is a team game. If VVS scores a century, and India wins he is great (no doubt). But if Sachin scores and India wins. He played for his records (strange). In simple terms it is called double standards
