No decency left in certain people
by Jai Babu on Sep 23, 2011 12:19 PM  | Hide replies

It is really disgusting to see communal comments even upon a person's death. It is one thing to oppose Pak or Indian Is1amist radicals & fanatics, but tarring all our Indian Mus1ims and especially dead heroes like Tiger Pataudi is reprehensible.

We have many Indian Mus1im icons from Mohammed Rafi, Zakir Hussain, NAushad, Aamir Khan, Zaheer Khan, Maulana Azad, Abdul Kalam to Vir Chakra winner & Kargil Martyr Captain Haneefuddin Hawaldar, Abdul Hamid or Ashfaqullah Khan who fought and lost their life for the nation and countless others....

The idiotic comments of some bigots is really upsetting

Consider this with he batting with one eye; as he lost his eye in an accident at the age of 20;
Know him before you comment; he might be an average batsman but was a good captain;
You should evaluate him based on those days of cricket;

Tiger Pataudi - The first & the last King of Indian Cricket
by sudip majumder on Sep 23, 2011 12:13 PM  | Hide replies

Present “Tendulkar” generation can never fathom the elegance, the cricketing spirit and the sheer guts of Tiger Pataudi. Any cricket lover of our country would never forget the 1974 series of Super Cat Clive Llyod's team - a team that can make a munch of the current batting corps any day. And here is Tiger against Roberts, Garner, Holding and fighting them with Bedi Solkar Chandra and Prasanna. Eden and Cheepak will never see those days of great Indian victory against the mightiest team ever - all thanks to the great Nawab of Indian cricket. The caring of fellow cricketers including ground staffs; the passion for the game, the sheer knowledge and the reading of the game and of course an elegant in every sense , a complete international par excellence but a true Indian cricketer who cares for Indian team and his team mate first. He has been the victim of the nastiest Mumbai politics, nastiest Congress politics [in Delhi test , he was the radio commentator and Calcutta test he was the captain – all in 1974] but nothing could dominate his spirits, elegance and sportsmanship. He has spine and guts and sheer self respect which the current corps of Indian just simply can not fathom as their role model is Tendulkar and Mahi of the world!!! .

Correction please - In 1974 Garner and Holding were not there in the team. The bowling attack of West Indies comprised Roberts, Bernard Julien and Holder.

Pataudi was not just a legend, but the father of modern cricket in India. His Immaculate style and poise made him a heart throb of many youngsters like me. Fortunate to be born in the 50s we could watch his greatness. All time greats like Gary Sobers have acknowledged the sportman Pataudi. We have lost a great cricketing figure. May his noble soul rest in peace.

There is a tendency on our part to either condemn one wholesale or praise one to the skies when not warranted. Poor batting average. Sill considered so high cricketer!? Why, Nawab?

He was not a great batsman,not a stroke player, not a fast scorer but there was no better batsmen than him in the team.Ajit wadekar was always a promising batsman but like all bobmay players, gradually became a dull slow scoring batsman.

So much praise for a batsman averaging 35?!
by sandeep kumar on Sep 23, 2011 12:05 PM  | Hide replies

I went through his records on cricinfo, and his record reads 2700 runs at 35, and 9 wins in 40 games.I mean, maybe decent stats, but today, everyone calls it an 'irrepairable loss to world cricket'. What about tendulkars 50 average with 6 times the runs? And did Mr Pataudi have to play ODIs(where tendulkar has 20000 odd runs!) and carry the hopes of a billion people? And Ganguly(dada) should be the best captain India had, looking at statistics and also the fact that he taught India to win overseas. It is rightly said that death magnifies a persons achievements greatly!

statistics never tell the true story.The highest score of jason gillespie in tests is 201 not out while that of steve waugh is 200 and azharuddin is 199. By statistics don bradman's average is 99.99 nearly twice that of tendulkar.does that mean sachin is just half a player that don was??there may be many players whose average in one is more than that of gilchrist.does than make gilly a lesser player??miroslav klose has more world cup goals than pele. christiano ronaldo never won a world cup. george best never played in one. does that mean all these players were not great??please leave statistics aside while deciding greatness..PLEASE NOTE THAT IN TIGER'S CASE HE PLAYED WITH ONE EYE.

You judge a players greatness by statistics.that is what gavaskar declared and scored slowly and has an impressive record.Though Gavaskar was equel to tendulkar.Read about players like LLyod,sobers,Richards, Botham,Roberts,dont look at their statistics

please show some knolwedge on the game, which is not in pure numbers. Accepted that MAK may not have been the best performing batsman but from what I have heard his achievements are world class and he a tuaght a group of Indian test cricketers to win abroad..so he has immense contribution...also we dont really knwo how much tendulakr would have averaged in an era without chest gaurds and helmets? lets so some maturity and intelligence in statistical comparisons

Ever heard of guys like Hobbs, Weekes, Trueman, Spofforth, etc. I am sure you haven't... By your logic, all these yesteryear greats will look dwarfs in comparison to modern day giants if stats were the only basis. You need to keep the perspective in mind - there is a whole era in between and a lot in that era was different than now. Try figuring that out and you would know why... Apples to apples please!

Tiger Pataudi
by janardhan ayoor on Sep 23, 2011 12:03 PM

A cricketing era has come to an end with the demise of M A K Pataudi.

I was a young school kid when Pataudi was playing active cricket. Those were the days when cricket was truly a gentleman's game played with grace and poise.

Pataudi was a fine gentleman cricketeer and one of the finest captains the game has ever produced.

We salute last Tiger that once adorned the portals of Indian Cricket , may his soul rest in peace.

We grew up to like cricket by hearing stories of Pataudi's exploits from elders. Always knew him as Tiger Pataudi and only later got to know that he was Mansur Ali Khan. Definitely a trendsetter and a great sportsman. May he RIP

Please educate yourself! He brought in what s known as team spirit> He showed individual records cannot win cricket matches. (With at most respect & affection, sachin & Sunil have not won as many matches as the number of centuries they have scored.)
He showed the world that for winning matches, you need not depend on fast bowlers; we use to try out with CK noidu, Roosi surti & amarnat, so on.
Remember the famour spin quatret?
When he was at cover point; it was Tiger on prawl!!
