Bharat Ratna why and for what?
by Mallik Sharma on Apr 08, 2011 01:22 AM

It is simply crazy. Just because you have won World Cup after some 30 years or so, people are all clamouring for Sachin's 'elevation'. But why? Apart from earning hundreds of crores for himself and family what else has he done for the country, except of course nicely playing criket his own love. Give him the title Cricket ratna, no objection or Arjuna Award no objection. But Bharat Ratna, for that Sachin has to grow and wait and sacrifice too. Can he sacrifice all except the basics of his properties for the cause of the country? That way innumerable demands for Bharat Ratna to this person or that person would be made and that would also become quite cheap. Awards and titles per se are undesirable but an exception was made to honour the really talented and deserving and that exception should be very sparingly used. Especially in case of the highest title of Bharat Ratna. Why Viswanathan Anand the only world chess champion from Asia - does not he deserve Bharat Ratna on the same touchstone? There can be many other aspirants or candidates proposed. Had India been defeated in this World Cup I don't think any such clamour would have arisen at all.

Bharat ratna for what?
by Shesh Lak on Apr 07, 2011 06:09 AM  | Hide replies

I don't understand why all these politician waste their time in debating who should get Bharat Ratna and who shouldn't. These thugs don't have time to visit their constituency but they are ready to start a debate which has no significance to general public.
I would like to know on what ground a person should be confer an award? Just because so and so person is playing some sports. Nonsense.. What is their contribution to the nation building? What have they done for uplifting the life of hunderds and thousands of poor human being? Are they doing any philanthropy? To a bare minimum, there needs to be some sort of social work is required. I don't understand how come playing cricket alone be treated as criteria for bestowing the highest civilian award to some one.. Please explain this to me. These guys are making enough money and they don't require any award per se, and by giving Bharat Ratna to any tom dick and harry, we are degrading the so called value of our highest civilian award. I'm not against Sachin or Dhoni but I'm totally against misusinng the so called authority given to the policians which might very well deminise the value of these awards.

What did Satyajit Ray, Pundit Ravi Shankar, Lata Mangeshkar, M.S. Subbalakshmi do to the uplifting the life of hundreds and thousands of poor human beings?

I am not supporting or opposing that Tendulkar must be given "Bharat Ratna"

As per wikipedia, Bharat Ratna is awarded to people for their highest degrees of national service. This service includes artistic, literary, and scientific achievements, as well as "recognition of public service of the highest order.

Sachin has been serving Indian cricket for the past 22 years and he is considered the best in batting when he started at 16 and still is at 38 and none denies his services to Indian cricket are of the highest degree. And cricket is an art too. Or is cricket a science?

Just because someone is making money does become ineligible for "Bharat Ratna" per se.

When it is a match between India and Pak, people spent thousands to reach there and be apart of the event. But when it is concerning the corruption the cancer of the society, they do not turn up! Is it because of lack of awareness about the efforts of Hazare or people are totally surrendred and compromised to corruption as part of their life

Bharat Ratna for Anna Hazare, first!
by Jagdish Reddy on Apr 07, 2011 05:50 AM  | Hide replies

Why not for Anna Hazare.
If this award is given to him, the corruption in India will stop.
Nothing against Sachin :)
But Anna is a more deserving candidate for Bharat Ratna as his crusade will uplift more than half a billion Indians above poverty line.

Who feel that Sachin should get the Bharat Ratna - all I can say is that you people have still not come out from the shackles of slavishness since the times of the British rule in India. Having served the Brits for 200 years - the slave mantality has not gone out of your minds.
