The way SMG,Mohinder,Vishwanath used to face lethal fast bowling without helmet, arm guard etc...sheer technical competency..the fast bowling at present is not even 75% of what it used to be in 70s and 80s..

Those days no instruments to measure..moreover teams like WI wi have 4 demons..two tired, the other two will come. No rest for the batsmen. But surely much faster and accurate than present bowlers.

I read those details in Sportstar.. My uncle had a huge collection Plus Hindu Paper cuttings! :-)
I started watching cricket from the Reliance cup onwards! :-)

They say Jeff Thomson from Australia was perhaps the quickest.
Just copied this from w.i.k.i
Competing in a 1978 fast bowling contest that included many of the leading bowlers in the world, Thomson came first with a delivery clocked at 147.9 km/h, ahead of Michael Holding (141.3 km/h) and Imran Khan (139.7 km/h). In 1975 during a test match, he was timed using high-speed cameras with a release speed of 160.45 km/h

Lillee / Thomson combo was real deadly stuff...treat to watch them bowl to SMG

Were doordarshan showing matches live on TV in those days. I don't remember if the covered test matches. I remember when India used to play in West Indies I used to listen commentary on radio till 2-3 AM lying in bed :-)

You are joking about DD Sports :-). That channel didn't even exist in those days. It was only DoorDarshan Not PassDarshan :-)

Yes perhaps. When you think about that mohinder amarnath wicket taken by Michal holding in World Cup final. Ball came in like an off spinner. What a sight that was!!
I was too young then. born in 1981 only. I started watching cricket seriously during the 1992 hero cup. year am nt exactly sure. may be one or two years here and there. But india, sa, wi took part in the series. india beat wi by some 101 or 99 runs in the final in which, the old kumble with spegs, took 6/12, his best performance in an odi
Re: Does anybody remember the hero cup in 1992 ?
by Sports Lover on Oct 01, 2010 12:23 AM
yes I still remember. Lara was at his peak in those days I think and his wicket was very important.
Re: Re: Does anybody remember the hero cup in 1992 ?
by Rajan S on Oct 01, 2010 12:29 AM
hmm. infact sachin bowled lara in the finals. he was bowling medium pacers and lara got bowled off the inside edge. Till then WI were going great guns chasing india's 226 or 225. That wicket started the collapse and in the next few overs kapil took the wkts of artherton and their captain richie richardson. I think one wkt was caught and bowled and the ither was lbw
Re: Re: Re: Does anybody remember the hero cup in 1992 ?
by Rajan S on Oct 01, 2010 12:31 AM
After that kumble ran through the tail and captured his best figures in ODI's which is 6/12. WI were all out for something like 124. and the whole of eden gardens started bursting fire crackers

And then there was a titan cup. India and South Africa played the final. What a match!! That time too sachin was hero with the bowling. I think south africa needed 5 or 6 runs with 8-9 down but tendulkar didn't let them score those runs.

Sports Lover and Rajan S u both are sharing good memories of Indian Cricket..
But even i want to share something with you people..
Hero cup played at 1993..India won 1st semifinal against SA..Sachin bowled last over and India won that gr8 match by 2 runs and booked their place in the final and in the final India won against West Indies..Kumble took 6 wickets in the final..
Titan cup was played in 1996 and India won..
i guess now both of you are agree with me in this discussions..

It is hard to remember these days. So much cricket is being played these days. Earlier there was not much cricket being played and I used to remember scores/results of every match. Not any more though.

Do u remember one more series. India's tour to nzl in which azhar was our captain and ian rutherford was nzl captian? Do u rem it? There is a reason why i ask u this. I hav to tell one imp thing abt this series
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Does anybody remember the hero cup in 1992 ?

I don't think I remember unless something special happened in that series ;-)
Ken Rutherford was known for his long parrot nose :-)
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Does anybody remember the hero cup in 1992 ?
by Rajan S on Oct 01, 2010 12:40 AM
In that series, i think we played a 5 match odi series with Nzl. the jerseys were full white. In the third match or so, nzl got bowled out for some 134 runs. And sachin asked azhar to give him the opening slot as the target was too low, so no risk in it. And sachin smashed a whirlwind 41 ball 82 , which in those days were unbeleivable for others. Finally gavin larsen got his wkt.he was lbw. So as india found a new opener, nzl in response asked chris harris to open to score quick runs. SO what i wanted to tell u is that, It was sachin who introduce the style of scoring quick runs in the first 15 ovrs and not jayasuriya as all beleive. Jayasuriya did that in 1996 wc but sachin started that in 1994 nz series

GRV was elegance personified. If u go to the stadium, just watching him go to the crease, taking his guard was paisa vasool. Then if he scores few runs..that'sa big bonus

I think his square cut / late cut and leg glance were famous. I have watched him on TV though.

He handled some of the great fast bowlers with aplomb and the grace,,OMG..none of the current batsmen have.

Actually I started playing cricket in 1983-84 I think and played till 2000. If I remember correctly it was 1985 world series when I really started watching cricket. In that series ravi shastari was declared Champion of Champions and won the car.

ok..that Australia series, that was a great team..the present commentator Sivaramakrishnan was a successful leg spinner and a decent bat in that series

I replied in detail below. But main reason why I wanted to tell you about this was that we can discuss cricket as well ;-)
Re: Re: @sportslover

yeah very right, If some constructive debate or discussion takes place, then that is very fine. if it crosses the limits, then it goes horribly wrong

I rather use the internet for monitoring forex rates for my office and also doing a bit of sma time trading on forex and reading on ine news.

It normally starts like this. I too used to just read news/comments and never bothered to comment. But when you start and you make few friends it becomes addictive.
Re: Re: @cricketfan

We here do a lots of time waste specially when cricket match is going on or about to start in day or two.
Few of us watch live on tv and provider instant updates which are faster than any website in the world ;-)
Re: Re: Re: @cricketfan
by cricketfan on Sep 30, 2010 11:54 PM
Yes,I heard about it that people spend lot of time in this forum dissecting the game and many produce stats in a jiffy..
Re: Re: Re: Re: @cricketfan
by Sports Lover on Sep 30, 2010 11:56 PM
yes some rely on stats and some on their pure cricketing knowledge. Only a few of us have been playing/watching/following cricket for even more than 25 years.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: @cricketfan

Wow me too..I got hooked to cricket in 1971 I think when SMG brought us into the cricketing map and that famous win in WI.
Re: @rajan s
by Rajan S on Sep 30, 2010 11:59 PM
yeah i remember somebody commenting like that. But i don't remember any other thing like the id or the date. Why do u ask me that now? Do u want me to do the same again? he he
Re: Re: @rajan s
by Sports Lover on Oct 01, 2010 12:05 AM
Ha ha ha. I am saying that because on some days a few idiots come here and start abusing India or Indians and then everyone of us forgets about cricket as they need to be replied in same way.
Only thing that happens then is abusing and reporting.
Most of those abusers are perhaps NRI's and will spoil the discussion. But during this TEST series you can perhaps expect cricket discussion only as those people will be sleeping ;-)
Am from cochin... another irrelevant match is coming here. God knows, when will these trinations and bilaterals be stopped? Or when will be the next time, india perform on a stage which matters. like the wc or champions trophy etc etc. I know that we have won T20 WC recently, but after that we hav become a laughing stock in major tournaments
Re: Cochin is hosting first odi
by cricketfan on Sep 30, 2010 11:31 PM
Not recently, after that two T20 WCs have been taken by Pakistan and England.India's performance in these two T20 WCs was pathetic.
Re: Re: Cochin is hosting first odi
by Rajan S on Sep 30, 2010 11:53 PM
yes exactly. in between that one champions trophy also passed by and we were knocked out early in that tournament also. The performance in bilaterals and tri-nations are immaterial. If like in football, if significantly higher points were awarded to teams on their performance in wc's, champions trophies etc, India wouldn't have become 2nd or 3rd ranked ODI team.
Re: Re: Re: Cochin is hosting first odi
by Rajan S on Sep 30, 2010 11:57 PM
For eg: If 100 points are awarded to team which wins a world cup, then only 20 or 30 points should be given to those who wins bilateral or tri-nation series. Performance in important tournaments should be given more weightage.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Cochin is hosting first odi
by Sports Lover on Sep 30, 2010 11:59 PM
It really boils down to consistency of a team in major tournaments like world cup. Team like India will win 2 matches and then lose one. But they cannot afford to do that in knock out stages.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Cochin is hosting first odi
by Rajan S on Oct 01, 2010 12:06 AM
Being stronger in only one dept won't help us to be consistent. All good teams have good bowling attack, and whose bowlers have got the wicket taking abilities
Reddy is a surname which I believe is real. The "riceplate" I think is added to make it appear a bit complicated or spicy. Reddy's are normally rice traders in that region.
