an insult to cricket, just pathetic that people who dont even know "c" of the cricket world start purchasing team to earn, sports isn't money--do ur old bollywood work zinta, shetty--hug and kiss all ..i always feel annoying about IPL, i strongly support ricky pointing on these issue..shortest format of the game will kill test and ODI..support test and ODI..no more 20/20's, specially IPL?? bigger tahn NBA--modi go and wash ur a$$ ho le
Modi always tries to compare his IPL to football. Football is a global sport which is played and watched by BILLIONS!!
Im sure next he will say IPL is bigger than the football world cup which is shown LIVE in every country on the planet!! MODI needs to shut his mouth he is sounding more and more like a joke!

Mr. Khan, NFA and NBA are not the football league watched by billions. However, those two leagues are very popular in USA.

@Pseudo - He said "Modi always tries to compare his IPL to football" - Where is Modi comparing it to Football?
Ita high time Govt Should control this Loud Mouth Modi who seems to be living in fools paradise . IPL is not just 3 years old he is talking about becoming bigger than NFL & NBA. we have seen the no. of. audiences in the last champions league which Modi touted as the Biggest Cricketing event. I bet you if One year the sponsors take a back leap Modi and his IPL wont be seen anyware. Can Modi explain why half of the teams are planning to sell stakes in the team with in two years of inception??dont they have confidence in Modis Revenue Model?? Pity for the Investers who are spending 1300 crores for the New teams. No wonder there is not much bidders . And the way things are going when Indian national side is finding it difficult to get a sponsor expecting this IPL becoming successful over a period of time is far from the absurd Dream of this Gentleman!!!!!

1.2 billion and still growing...ipl viewership in india and porkiestan easily outclasses the epl and nba...no doubt these tourneys have specific class and are priced very expensive...but wait for 5 years more...ipl will easily overtake these tourneys

It is just cited as an example that whatever Modi says need not be correct. If you should have followed Modi himself said that champions leagues was the biggest Cricketing event in the world . But finding it difficult to get some takers for the second season is already planned to move out of india. When you talk about the brand equity you got to understand Cricket is a passion only in india and very few other countries. So abvisouly there is a celing for growth!!!
"The idea for the IPL had been gestating ever since Modi was a student in the US"...whats that ? I thought the whole idea was first thought about by Subhash Chandra and Kapil Dev, and IPL was started on those lines to compete with ICL, or else how did ICL start before IPL on the same lines ?

True. How I wish somebody brought sense to both the author of this column and also the IPL chairman.
