New faces - 3 idiots
by kumar on Jan 29, 2010 02:10 AM

Among three faces, I believe Badrinath really needs the opportunity to play for india. I believe Mithun and Saha weren't tested at the highest level and under pressure situations. Selectors need to select the players atleast after watching 3 to 4 ranji seasons. One season may not define the player unless if the player is exceptionally talented.

Stats need to broken up into different ways. Just taking 43 wickets is not enough. It's how many quality wickets he took and how many strong parterships he ended by taking the wickets and also how fast he bowls etc.

As far as Saha, I believe if he is better than Parthiv, Dinesh then it is justified.

Also this is the time, selectors need to start grooming the young generation of middle order batsment. The present trio may not able to continue for a foreseeable future. Selectors need to start thinking of replacing one by one at gradual time intervals (instead of waiting till the last minute),

Badri deserves his chance . I'm not sure about Saha , he doesn't look like a capable batsman.

Next in line should be Pujara, then Rohit Sharma then Manish Pandey and then Kohli.

Every time a team is chosen we find new names. These new players merely go with the team and return without playing any matches and are dropped subsequently. I hope Mithun is lucky this time thought I do not see Saha playing at all.

by Salil on Jan 29, 2010 01:13 AM  | Hide replies

Of those 9 matches which Mithun played and averaged a fascinating 23 with the bowl, how many of those were played at one of his team's home ground - Mysore?

Mysore - where we got one of the most lively pitch(read fast bowler friendly wicket)in the country.

Do the selectors care to factor that aswell?

On that pitch even the so called "average agarkar" arguably bowled better..

I am not saying Mithun is a bad bowler, just that he had fair bit of advantage and so may not be as great as most are thinking he would be...

Hopefully i am proved wrong......

U r right. They hyped up Patel who was supposed to be India's answer to Donald. He ended up bowling slower than Praveen Kumar.LOL.

140 speed is merely high fast medium.Indians would do well to find a seamer like Zaheer, not express fast but lethal nevertheless.

Now our batting is better than SA - but we would be missing Dravid and possible VVS.

Even Dhoni should be considered East. If only Bengal is considered then your analysis will also be skewed. Moreover Include the populations of those regions to get a better picture. If you call as North half the Indian states then obviously they will have more players.

it is not just the population....talent has nothing to do with population....first of all, indians are rarely talented in sports....but here it is abt opportunities being given....it is not like gambhir is better than rohit sharma or a manish pandey....a simple case would be that of raina....even a pinch of that opportunity badrinath hasnt got....he has been more consistent than any of the other blokes in the above team

Some quck question here guys, if somebody can help me out.

1. What wrong Manish pandey has done recently to not deserve a place in the team??
2. What are they going to do with Rohit Sharma now..will he ever get a chance again?
3. Why so much of persistence with Ishant Sharma...??
4.Arent they treating Virat Kohli in the same way did Yuvraj Singh. They are forcing him to be a ODI/T20 material? why not give him a chance in tests too??
5. Why not Amit Mishra ...?? He is the best batsman and a fielder in all the spinners we have today.??

Please give your comments. I want to know how you guys are taking all this as well. Thanks

The so-called 'Yuvraj Singh'. Biggest 'Looser' in World Cric
by Santhanam on Jan 28, 2010 08:21 PM  | Hide replies

Its said that a person's achievements are built around his 'Attitude' more than his 'Talent'. How true it is specially when it comes to 'Mr Yuvraj Singh', the biggest 'Looser' in world cricket. To his credit or luck, wotever u may call, he entered Cricket at the prime age of 19 and after 10 yrs this Man can be termed as a Mediocre achiever. Agreed he is got 'Talent' but even Vinod Kambli had it but lost in one imp aspect to Tendulkar which is 'Attitude'. If you see at ppl like Tendulkar, Dravid etc they are more recognized for their 'Attitude' than their Talent. Coz Talent can open the first door for you, even the second and the third but it would certainly not open the last door without the right attitude. Inspite of the fact that Yuvraj has been around for 10 long years he is not able to cement a test spot coz of his 'Wrong' Attitude. Late Night Partying, Having Affairs with All and Sundry Models/Actresses, Being a Casanova, etc have lead to his downfalls. Yuvraj Singh is a prime lesson for any youngster of 'How not to loose focus in Career'. A Career span of 10 years and having Career Test runs of nearly 1500 runs is pathetic enough to judge his mediocrity. He is been always in the NEWS for all the wrong reasons like Affirs with Models, Actresses, etc but hardly had any cricketing achievement. Yuvraj better learn from Sachin & Dravid on how to stay focus in life and take your Career Seriously before its too late.

Mr Santharam ... I would differ a bit with you here. History has it, all the successful sportsmen didnt , necessarily, have the right attitude. Brian lara had all the wrong attitude in the world. Mike Tyson was never a good person, leave apart his attitude. Tiger woods used the 'Golf' and his stature to get 'ALL' he wanted to get in his life. Maradonna is another example. Andre Agassi has proved it too after his revelations regarding drugs. And there are several others too...

The thing that matters is what you do in a 7 hours/1 day match. What you do outside the park was never important.

I will attribute the failure of Yuvraj singh to his carelessness and not giving the value of his own wicket. It can be tolerated in T20 and to some extent in ODIs but not in tests. The man has all the talent and technique a batsman is required to have but not the pateince and temperament. The attitude has nothing to do with it.

Yes he might have these limitations... but Sourav Gangulys, Kapil devs, Manjrekars and Ajay Jadejas have these limitations too. But they VALUED their wicket. They CARED about their wickets.

PS: when I say limitaions, I excuded Ganguly's abilities in off side. He had the rare techniques in offside.

I am again not talking about ability here. Steve Waugh may have had some limitations but he went ahead to achieve many things including captaining a world class side apart from his batting achievements thanks to his right attitude. The kind of opportunities Yuvraj got, he shud have made it count. For that matter Dhoni & Sehwag dont posses the greatest of technique however their attitude made sure that they hold their place in the team. Take it this way. If Yuvraj was as dedicated as a Sachin or a Dravid he would have been the 'Captain' of Indian Cricket team by now and would have scored atleast 9000 test runs like Mahela Jayawardhena, etc who had come to Cricket the same time when this Casanova Yuvraj had come 10 years back. They focussed and valued their game but instead Yuvraj got focussed in affairs with models like Kim Sharma, etc etc and lost it. Infact he is lucky to still hang around in some form of cricket for which he shud thank his stars. Post his retirement when he looks back at his career he would realize that 'He was the biggest LOOSER in World Cricket'.

Common Man, you just can’t really discard him like this, if he is having a lean phase right now. Who doesn’t really go through the low phases in his career. Everybody does, even sachin had, right.

The thing is again, he didn’t VALUE the opportunity to play in tests. He just took it the way he took it before in cases on ODIs and T20s. And yes, he got his test cap after a long long hard work as well. I fear Virat kohli will also go his way. Even selectors are treating him way they did Yuvraj.

Ok, tell me one thing now…. Has Dhoni got a technique to earn a test cap. No, A big no. Technique wise he doesn’t even look like a club level cricketer. But he got the chance and he VALUED those chances. And now see…..

Pradeep, u are confusing attitude and discipline with being a maverick. Brian Lara had an incredible attitude, my friend! You cannot score 500 not out in a first class match, or 400 & 375 in test matches without a proper attitude. He ALWAYS had a great attitude. He was hand picked by Richards as a future star in the early 90s because of his attitude and talent. He did however stand up for issues with their cricket board, and got into some controversies because he was a bit more outspoken, than say Tendulkar. But, yuvraj, for all his talent is in the news for wrong reasons - boozing, philandering, affairs, fist fights in a party, too much late night partying etc. There is no reason otherwise for a batsman of his talent and ability to have an ave. of 37 in tests, while it should be more like 55. You cannot talk about lack of opportunities, because, look at Gambhir... see how he has salvaged his career. Discipline and attitude are a must in a team as competitive as India.

For me the main reason yuvi has not secured his place in the test side is because all these 10 years he has not been very comfortable when it comes to quality spin bowling and also on wickets where there is lot of seam/swing.
One of the Reasons for that: high back lift.

And offcourse his temperament has not helped either; he is not prepared to grind his innings.

To his credit though he is good
on sub continent wickets and even on wickets where there is bounce (where many other indian batsmen are not comfortable).

Ask yuvi to open the innings; he is not likely to average more than 10, since the ball is new and seaming around.

Coming back to the attitude: Had that been a problem he wouldn't have been one of the most successful cricketers in ODIs/T20s.
So let’s not pick on him on his partying and fooling around stuff, let him have his fun.

All said and done, any cricket fan will tell you that test cricket requires a lot more patience, attitude and temparament than ODIs or T20s. ODIs and T20s are for people with talent. Test Cricket is for people with talent & ability temparament&attitude. Ask any cricket great or player or fan. Thats why it is not easy to replace to Dravids and Laxmans in test Cricket

Only Loosers give Excuses. Dravid got a chance to play only one test when Sanjay Manjrekar got injured and that was the last match that Manjrekar played. Dravid took off from there and see wot all things he has achieved. Achievers make the most of even the slightest of chance. The fact is if Mr Yuvraj was focussed and a hard working cricketer, Ganguly would have retired long back. But his Casanova personality made sure that he never got a chance when these middle order guys were playing. Looser Yuvraj Singh.
