In that case y ricky ponting was fighting with third umpires when it was ruled against them, it shows technology is not foolproof.

Nobody suspects match fixing -- good for indian cricket
by Vaidhy Narayanan on Dec 30, 2010 08:05 AM

The 2000's generation of cricket followers in India seem
to be more affectionate towards the team. I always look at games especially involving south africa with police mindset. But this one looks genuiene unless India gets a bad bad defeat the next game or Zaheer is again injured all of sudden. Things will be dubious about this result.

India's victory
by Dilip Mahanty on Dec 30, 2010 05:43 AM  | Hide replies

Wasn't it great to see Graeme Smith's arrogant and sneering face rubbed in the dust? His attitude after the first Test was "oh so superior". He dismissed India as an unworthy opponent undeserving of the No1 rank.
India should not sit on its laurels but try its best to win the 3rd Test. If it does it will shut Smith's superiority complex forever. India should employ Ojha in place of Ishant in the final Test as the pitch historically favours spin.It will also give it a better balance.
Finally, what a gem VVS is for India. Yet the man never gets kudos he deserves from the media. If it had been a guy like Yuvraj the media would have been tripping over itself trying to get every little information out of him(cricket or otherwise) and splashing it as a headline! Glamorous and ego struck sportspeople seem to attract the media these days not simple, humble, decent, quietly efficient players who proudly serve their country without any fuss or expectation. People like Laxman,Tendulkar & Dravid are the real icons to be projected before the youth of the country not some brash, self serving sportspeople!

I think instead of Ojha Pravin Kumar could be better choice even if he is not on tour. India should summon him to replace Ishant Sharma immediately. There were teams in the past who summoned a particular player for a crunch situations. I remember when Sachin Tendulkar first toured Australia in 1992 Indian openers were struggling and then after two test India summoned Navajot Sidhu to make life easy for Indian team. I have the feeling that Ishant Sharma is very low on confidence and carrying a injury which he is hiding...thats why he is bowling a bit slow then he used to.
We have seen that even Zaheer Khan who is not fit fully can make life difficult for SA batsman with his swing and movement even with 80 mph speed, coz the pitch has done the rest. We all know what Pravin Kumar can do with a new ball on green top. He is the best swing bowler available in India. We need a bowler who can move the ball and not a Fast bowler who can't move or swing the ball !!
SA is going to give a good bouncy track in Cape town and not Green top wicket (which help Indian pacers to gain lateral movement)...so going with Ojha will not be a wise choice !!

This is Why Sachin is more than Team India

Ask a random passer by, what would you ideally want from Team India?
A non fanatic might say World cup .
A fanatic might say No1 Test status and world cup.
A girl newbie fanatic might say T20 world cup.

And if you ask them why?
Answer: It will make Indians proud. A non-fanatic might not even know
for how many years we have a world cup.All they know is its a big cup
and it will make us proud.

Why are these important anyways? We have a world cup champion for
every 4 years. T20 chapmions for every 2 years. Constant doubts over
our No1 status and might not hold onto it for more than 2 years.

20 years down the lane, whats so great about winning 2 world cups
(1983,2011) out of 10 world cups so far and almost most of the countries
will have the similar record.Whats so great about winning 2011 world cup?
Indians are called champions from 2011-2015. And that too if we loose 5-2 to Aus or
SA, we cant even call them champions for 4 years.

Notable achievements that come to my mind till now
1983 world cup, Titan cup,Hero cup, 96 SF,Sharjah cup,
Natwest trophy, 2003 Finals,T20 World cup,CB Series,No1 Test status.
Except for No1 status, most countries have similar achievements.
But then we have 'SACHIN'.The best bastman ever(Only Bradman can contest).
Most of his records will stay alive forever(If you are cricket fanatic,
then u will know that most of them are impossible to break).A poll in
australia twice this decade said Sachin is the current best player.Ponting
was no-where near in those polls. Current and ex-crickets, commenattors,
everyone alround the world praise him as the best.
That makes me an Indian proud. He is like Dhyanchand of Cricket.
He is like a Schumacher ,a Pele, a federer, a Tiger woods.
50 years from now, Indian cricket might become like our Hockey.
Usa, Canada,Ireland,Afghanisthan might be top 4 teams.Your Grand children
might not follow cricket, but they sure will be surprised and happy to hear
that the best player, holder or most runs, centuries is an INDIAN.
He is a phenomenon that happens once in a life time.
I cherish a century from Sachin more than an Indian victory.
This insight is just for Non-fanatics to weigh Team India achievments
against Sachin's.
Pakis with Indian names here and other morons with disgruntled lives
who have to vent their frustration on someone, can keep trashin Sachin.
Infact, its no fun without u guys.Sometimes ur comments make me laugh.
Keep coming guys.

Best Indian 2nd Innings batsmen when India won
by Free Free on Dec 30, 2010 04:38 AM  | Hide replies

Laxman: Matches 31, Runs 1217, Avg 67.61, 100s 2 & 50s 9

Sachin: Matches 41, Runs 1247, Avg 51.95, 100s 3, 50s 6.

So when it comes to 2nd innings performance Laxman is a minor shade better.

Now can we compare everything else? lol Like ODI performance, Tests 1st innings performance, fielding performance, running between the wickets performance? haha..

So for god sake dont even compare Sachin with Laxman, its a joke comparsion

for heaven's sake...stop this crap and savour India's great win y'day and praise VVS' gritty performance. Don't undermine it by your T20 and ODI comparison (If you wanna compare, Sachin has played only 1 T20I and scored 10. No real comparison. Laxman has been given a raw deal in ODIs - 6 100s most of them against tough opponents and in winning matches and yet not part of ODI team. In fact he scored 5 of them in one season and was dropped a few matches later).

I didn't know that 67 v 51 is a small diff.
Nevetheless do not be carried away by stats....praise the worthy whenever they perform. Period. Just because you say Sachin is greater does not make VVS performance any inferior. Similarly, no one needs to bring down Sachin to prove VVS played well in this match. Let us enjoy each performance on its own merit rather than make it relative. MoM deservingly had to go to VVS, as next HS score was 39 n.o. and the 3rd HS again by him (38 in 1st inngs). Simply proves 20-21 batsmen struggled to score in 2 chances.

Sachin Bashers get a life
by Unapologetic Intellectual on Dec 30, 2010 03:29 AM  | Hide replies

Zaheer gave excellent support to VVS and thats why VVS was able to steer India to safety.
Same is the case with recent win vs Aus when Ishant gave excellent support to Laxman but got little credit for it.

Compare that to the scores of tailenders when Sachin needed one of them to dig in.
Mind you Laxman also exposes tailenders to fierce bowlers, its unavoidable coz you cant take a single off the last ball of the over always. Its just that tail-enders somehow play real bad when Sachin needs them.
As for this test, I think Sachin tried to play aggressive innings like Graeme Smith, thinking that the wicket anyways helping bowlers, so better make as many runs as quickly as possible, but that was probably a mistake.

In this test, The Man-of-Match should have been Zaheer Khan. He gave the crucial tailend support to Laxman & also got 6 wickets that too top batsmen/crucial moments

its shameful to speak against SRT, he has contributed indian cricket a lot and infact he has changed, there was so many matches he has won for us, I am not saying he is best or he is no.1, his contribution to indian cricket and overall cricket is so much that Laxman cannot acheive in his two lives (i'm not against Lax). I am just giving an example. the kind of contribution he has given in both One day and test.
Forget about his 10k runs in 2010, in the first match only, Sachin was highest scorer (36 and 100 not out), now its whose fault that he has to chase 500 plus runs? Lax did the same (38, 96) he got out at 96, what if SA scored those required 300 runs.. in the first place why our bowlers let them score 550 runs? if that was not the case, sachn's century would have given us some lead...

Re: Its not good
by inder on Dec 30, 2010 05:21 AM
Here is the reason Laxman's knock stands out compared to Sachin's scores in the first test.

Laxman's scores are the highest in each innings for both sides. No one else reached even a half century.

Coming to the first test, Tendulkar's scores are not remarkable when we take both sides into consideration.

I agree that Sachin is a great batsman; much better than Laxman. But, you do have to accept that Laxman's knock in this test is head and shoulders above any one else.

Main reason Laxman gets this kind of praise is that people used to question his usefulness at the drop of a hat. He never got the recognition he deserved.

There is no need to belittle any one else. after all, this is a team sport.

I agree with Inder. In fact when India wanted to play 5 bowlers in Bangladesh, they dropped VVS! He has hardly played against Ban whereas most of the others have toured Banga in 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2010. I think Sachin has 5 100s against them.

You are being very unfair to VVS. VVS has scored 2 K out of 7K runs vs Aus. He has played mindblowing knocks vs Warne and Mcgrath. His 281 is rated as one of the top 10 alltime best test inngs. If Sachin = Mcgrath, then VVS = Ambrose or Hadlee.

Re: Its not good

Simple point....last match's pitch had eased out and scoring runs was easy. I won't blame Sachin alone for the defeat. The whole team could have batted better. When MS Dhoni can score 90 odd and get out to a very difficult delivery, Viru, Gauti & Rahul failed after getting good starts. Of course, we were not chasing 484 runs, that was the lead, so putting India in a winnin position from there was extremely difficult.
This match, the pitch was very difficult throughout the 4 days, so whether SA would have chased down 300, the probability was very low. The value of 96 on such a pitch is far greater than a 111 in previous game.

Where did I say VVS is greater than Sachin. I have all along been saying it's a team game. One man cannot take blame for last match's defeat. Even VVS played a poor shot in 2nd inngs leave alone the promising starts (63, 80, 43) made by top3 not converted to a big score.
BTW, CM I can use beautiful adjectives for your reaction..u have not even read and understood what I have written. I still say value of 96 in this match is greater than 111 in the previous one given the context of the game and the nature of the pitch.
