how many indians watch leander paes on tv as compared to sachin?

the amount of time people have spend watching sachin play would be 10000 times more attention they have given to paes , which included you , cricket is by far the most followed sports in india.

dont talk crap

Sachin is by far the most famous and loved Indian sportsperson , he has the biggest attachment with Indian fans .

how many indians really follow vijender singh or sodhi or bindra?

sachin is so close to the common indian man and has given a reason to smile to millions of indians on numerous ocassions.

absolutely right comrade, but please don't bring other sports person in this as cricket is more popular so people follow sachin more, but they are also good sport persons. people follow them or not its no matter, our stand is sachin should get this Award

yes boss , but bharat ratna can be given to only one Sachin as he has influenced the Indian population the most , for about 20 years people have watched him both in stadiums and on televisions.

the attachment is too strong , there can only be one maradona from argentina no matter how many other argentines excelled in how many sports , same for pele and same for sachin .

Sachin has influenced Indian population but not positively. He has destroyed us and our prestige of being Indian by not contributing in the WorldCup finals when it mattered most.

How about Carl Lewis, Nadia Comaneci, Muhammad Ali (Clay), Paavo Nurmi, Michael Phelps, etc. There are too many that come to mind but surely sachin pales in comparison. He is not even India's best.

ratna is a political award, normally given to political person exception are few like Lata ji, and that's why this award lost its glory, now if if Govt. really respects people's feeling they should give this award to sachin. but i don't think they will do this as govt. is more busy in JPC PAC and other issues. well GM to all comrades

It is an answer to a question!
by Solomon on Dec 24, 2010 10:06 AM  | Hide replies

A question was put to Anand and he has answered. Is Anand mad to say, `No, I should be given before Tendulkar?'. Going by this, the headline is misleading, for Anand has not said this on his own, but it is only an answer to a question. Today, Times of India (TOI) is conducting a Poll, `Is Tendulkar the greatest sportsperson ever in the world?' A few sportspersons like Federer, Johnson, Pele etc. are included in the list. I am not sure whether it is going to the world audience or confined only to India. Cricket is not known to 95% of the countries in the world. It is an 8-nation game. India is cricket crazy and we are obsessed with the game and Tendulkar's achievements. Naturally, all Indians will vote for him and he will win hands down. But is it a true reflection of real greatness? After all, most of the others in the list of TOI ( I do not remember the complete list) have played or are playing global games unlike cricket which is confined to just 8 countries. So, how far it is correct to even conduct such a poll? In our own country, even the achievements of the likes of Bindra (Olympic gold), Vishwanathan Anand (multiple world championship played by many more countries than cricket) will definitely rank higher. However, as everything is media driven and popularity driven, you have to perhaps bow to that and say, `Tendulkar is the greatest ever sportsman', even if you are not convinced of the same!

Let the same question "Is Tendulkar the greatest sportsperson?" be asked after he chokes in the WorldCup.
Then we will get the right poll results.

Dont compare an indoor game such as chess with an outdoor game like cricket .

even carrow and chess are played in every country of the world which wud be higher than basketball and baseball , so does it mean chess and carrom are global games?

Re: Re: It is an answer to a question!

Thank you javier, you at least agree out-door `Bindra' is greater. Having said that, kindly note that the mental and physical fitness required for Chess is the same or ever greater than required for cricket. So, I do not see any difference between the two. And, Vishy is a multiple world champion in every format of the game. He certainly deserves the Bharat Ratna before Ten. You ask Ten the same question, `whether Vishy deserves Bharat Ratna' and the answer will be, `yes, definitely'. I am sure Ten will not say, `No, I should be given first'. So an answer to a leading question does not mean that someone has joined the growing chorus demanding Bharat Ratna for Ten! As I said, it is more media driven and he may get it!

@Solomon. Indian Media is ridiculously stupid. They just want to improve their viewer ratings by starting totally idiotic topics which nobody with even a little cricket knowledge will agree to
- Is Sachin better than Bradman? My answer would be Sachin is best to tie Bradman's shoe laces.

- Should Sachin be given Bharat Ratna?

Give him Navratna (Navratan Korma) instead since he is only fond of food and records.
