Sehwag won't be counted as a 'Great Batsman'.
by Junior Shelly on Mar 12, 2009 10:46 PM  | Hide replies

It is a fact that Virender Sehwag is a truly wonderful entertainer when he has the willow in his hand. But even the most devoted Sehwag fan would not consider him as a great batsman. When Sehwag is batting, the opposition always has a chance, because he can hit a six , and hold out on the very next delivery. He lacks the solidity we attribute to Sachin, Lara, Dravid, Ponting and Kallis who are the greatest of this era. Even that swashbuckler named Sir Issac Vivian Richards had an air of solidity around him. Sehwag doesn't belong to that class. But surely he is one of the greatest entertainers the cricket world has ever seen along with the likes of Jayasurya, Gilchrist and Afridi.

this is the kind of psyche v have..as they say" its all in the mind" if u have someone who ends up scoring 12000 runs at a strike rate of 50 he will b considered as one of the greats by u but if the score the same thinh with a strike rate of 80 then he is not grate???? why?? the fact is his avg matches with that of all the players that u have named then why is he not in the same league...who says u that u get this feeling that he might get out now....relax ur mind and enjoy his cricket...kallis or sachin or dravid dont promise b4 they come out to bat that v will survive atleast 60 odd balls....just for the sheer fear that he has put in the mind of bowlers all over ,he has to b counted amongst the best and he will b remembered for this long long after he is gone from the game

That is gibberish. At the end of the day it's the runs that count not how you make them . Shewag now has centuries against almost all Test playing nations and in all countries India and abroad- which neither Jayasuria or Gilchrist or Afridi ( this guy has just one Test century).
So don't go by style, a batsman is meant to score runs and he does. It doesn't matter how he looks i.e solid or liquid.

You are damn fool. Sachin, dravid and others you named always have in mind to make a century. They are selfish players. Sehwag score century by hitting six. Even he scored his 300 by hitting six.

To compare him with afridi is ultimate insult to sehwag. Sehwag is for more consistent and devastating than Afridi, and why you have judge and compare, to me and many admirers of game, Sehwag is a peerless entertainer and one of the greatest Test and one-day Batsman! Stats-wise and other-wise. Second, don't go and compare players, it is like arguing, which is the best fruit Apple or Orange!!

nit t,Sameer Bhagwat, Sathishkumar Krishnan, Ideal Man... all you guys should understand what TEST CRICKET is all about.
Let me ask you this question: Whom would you trust in a situation where India is trying to save a test match on day 5 of the game? Sehwag or Dravid / Sachin?
Whom would you prefer to make a steady progress on day one after a couple of wickets have fallen in the first hour of a test match? Sehwag or Sachin / Dravid?
Guys... the hall mark of a true player is his adaptability in all conditions and match situations. Sehwag knows only one way. i.e attacking. If he tries to alter his game, he perishes. We have numerous examples. A player like Sachin or Ponting can could alter their game as per the demand of the situation. Not Sehwag.

"player like Sachin or Ponting can could alter their game as per the demand of the situation", however, in case of Sehwag he alters the situation itself. so, u decide what u want a draw or a win.
also, u cannot rely on Sachin to sav a test. There r very few instances where he has played match saving innings.

nobody should play for personal milestones, such as sachin plays. he will take 20 balls to score 10 runs when nearing 100 and 10 balls to score 5 runs for 50.
sehwag, dhoni, yuvraj, raina and other in present team dont do like that.
even bradman got out in final match for him, he did not know his personal records. he needed only 4 runs for 100 runs avg.

Some one reported the averages of all the major current players viz. Sahwag, Sachin, Gambhir, Raina, Yuvraj, Dhoni before and after Dhoni took up captaincy. There was a remarkable jump in their batting averages in the post Dhoni period. This is indeed a point to ponder. The contrast is with the Dravid Chappel era during which Sahwag was nearly finished and others too suffered, resulting in crushing defeat in S.A. and W.C. 2007. A captain's job is to bring the best out of his men and Dhoni has done this admirably. From this point of view Dhoni may be considered as the best captain of today.

This is abt Sehwag and here also you brought Dhoni, who as well is part of this bright pack and mind it, there is a limited or no rivalry amongst the team members of Indian team for so many years despite divides waged by Chappel and others.

You desist to divide them and then, they would not be divided like in many other sports, Indians have woken up to the reality of bringing their best to admiration or to rejection of any or everyone? This is evolving India!

ppl are impressed by Shewag cuz he hit 6 when he was 94. Care to know who holds world record of hitting 6 to reach century??

Guess?? Its sachin Tendulkar 7 times -- cricinfo website source..

So now eat words -- Even inyoung days sachin use to play for gallery and hit six to reach 100.With maturity you become responsible.Even Shewag will slow down innext 3-4 days and play with maturity.sachin 163 was so sublime.Due to flat track we get bullies like Shewag,Cricket's tragegy due to flat tracks there are no good bowlers. Do you think shewag would have played fearlessly against 80's 90's fast bowlers on seaming pitches???

BIASES ARE TERRIBLE IN OUR MINDS! Your comments were echoed by Sehwag himself but you have to read what Vettori said? He is bully because he destroys 'CHINA (NZ-OZ or is OX) Shop? Do you equate him to bull because he is from a rural background?

Remove your bias for regionalism! He has been candid in admitting that best captain he has ever had, was Saurabh Ganguli! He is candid for him as well. Rural people generally are not diplomatic in their lifestyle and profession and then, they pay for it in countries like India where caucus of URBANIA, cannot accept their rise in any field?

That is not genuine way!

Accept the fact otherwise the whole world is awed many a times and your or other media people's analysis could not bother the world opinion and opponent, any more or any less!

Shewag on debut scored a century against South Africa in South Africa when the bowling attack included Pollock, Donald, Mcmillan on a seaming wicket. He has thrashed the likes of Brett Lee and co in Australia even on seaming wickets like WACA and Melbourne. It's a myth that he can't score on seaming wickets. Tell me on what seaming wicket has he failed? Have you forgotten his centuries in England on seaming wickets? You have no cricket knowledge. Get a Life!

Why are we trying to compare Sahwag and Sachin to disparage one or the other? Both are gems of Indian team. Of course, they pertain to different era. While Sachin is in his twilight years, Sahwag is in full bloom. Both are valuable for team India.
