India has lost 90% of its matches , whenever Irfan Pathan played in the last 3 years.

Agreed that cricket is not individual game, but even in a team game, the team is made up of individuals. In a ODI, every bowler has only 10 overs and if one bowler bowls poorly, it becomes a difference between a victory and defeat.

Sehwag can't be a great batsman.
by Manu Zach on Mar 13, 2009 12:10 AM  | Hide replies

Sachin, Dravid, Kallis, Ponting, Lara... all have played double the number of test matches Sehwag has played. Still they average more than Sehwag. Plus Sehwag has proven to be a sitting duck in the second innings, when the team is trying to chase a huge second innings total, or trying to save a test match. All the other players mentioned above have prove themselves by surviving in difficult conditions. Sehwag can perform only when there is no pressure.

statistics always dont show the destructive nature that batmen have against opposition bowlers.
BTW...have you forgotten his gritty 130 odd in 4th innings that saved India the game against australia last Jan. He set up India's win over england in which sachin scored the 100 int he 4th innings.
Ghajini effect?? short term memory loss for u guys?

by james seds on Mar 13, 2009 12:00 AM  | Hide replies

Now Tendulkar is not a good player, in 90's he was a great player. Now he is boaring batsman. His otherend sehwang beating bowlers.. so he also try to beat after 4 years,he takes his powerply and got injury. Vettori told that sehwang is the inspiration of indian batting now. others are follow up his batting scores. Now he is the great batsman in indian team, may be NO. 1

Tendulkar boring??? what game have you been watching???
his innings in the second ODI which got rained off was amazing. he took that up several notches for his brilliant 163 and was headed for the world record first double centruion in ODIs until cramps got the better of him.

and after the match he said, he knew he was injured even before the match!! Why did he want to risk it?
Tendulkar bats more sensibly now than ever, so not an exciting player anymore. But I like him more now, that before. But other young players in the team, matured faster than Tendulkar did.

Sehwag - good, not great. Face the facts and dont get emotional )
by abi on Mar 12, 2009 11:33 PM  | Hide replies

Yo all - Sehwag is a capable cricketer and a pure entertainer. He plays whole heartedly like many others. He is definitely good and can find a place in any cricket team. But, he can never be a sachin or a lara. To be them, you need not only agression and flamboyance, you need mental stability and a little more talent and cricketing acumen. You have to prove yourself in the swinging conditions when chasing a target of not more than 250 on a fourth innings. You must have the guts to control your natural instincts and stick with the tail enders if need to be - to score that final winning runs in the 4th match of a test series that is so important to the psyche of the team and to the rest of the series. Having a supporting cast helps a lot too. So kindly take a look at the facts before comparing Sehwag or any similar player to the likes of Lara and Sachin. There is a reason why they are the greatest. A sachin cannot score a 250 and 150 back to back against australia at peak form. Likewise, lara cannot repeat what sachin did in the 96 and other worldcups or in any series between 96 and 99. Sehwag has a long way to go in test matches, proving himself as the lone batsman left when your team is at 150/6 chasing 275 or championing a test series victory abroad - a feat that has eluded even the great sachin. Please.... take some time before you praise and elevate some one to the level of god - for your praises are worth more than you might know. Peace.

Sehwag is Great
by Sameer Bhagwat on Mar 12, 2009 11:30 PM  | Hide replies

Sehwag is truly a cricket great. He has now scored a century in each country, he will reach 20 centuries in no time. He scored a 100 on debut on seaming wickets in South Africa against Donald, Mcmillan and Pollock. Who can forget his hundereds in England on seaming wickets against Gough, Flintoff and co. What about his 194 vs Australia in Melborune or his 100 in Sydney against the so called seamers and fast bowlers like Brett Lee and Johnson. He has scored everywhere against all opposition. He ranks among the greatest that has every played cricket.

For the purists , get lost at the end of the day a batsman has to make runs over a long period of time, doe'snt matter how he looks in the crease . Sehwag has been playing since 2001 almost 8 years and his record speaks for itself.

I agree with Shelly Junior.
"Guys... the hall mark of a true player is his adaptability in all conditions and match situations. Sehwag knows only one way. i.e attacking. If he tries to alter his game, he perishes. We have numerous examples. A player like Sachin or Ponting can could alter their game as per the demand of the situation. Not Sehwag."
Good point Junior. Sehwag cannot be considered a great batsman. Yes he is great fun to watch - A lottery player. If he clicks, good. If he fails, who cares..!!!

Dhoni reaping fruits of Ganguly's efforts
by sharad jain on Mar 12, 2009 11:03 PM  | Hide replies

Guys, remember Ganguly brought in Sehwaag, Yuvi, Bhajji, zaheer, I Pathan and Raina. He persisted with them, even when they failed. This has increased their confidence and now all are contributing in Team India's breathtaking show. Dhoni is a leader, no doubt, but still credit goes to Dada also.
This is something what Ponting got from Steve waugh..isnt it?

You kidding right? Everyone excepting one or two were brought by Ganguly for that famous series against Australia at home. Yuvraj was introduced by Ganguly again during the ICC in Nairobi and so was zaheer khan. All this was under John wright - get your facts right...

Sehwag scored a century on debut against SA, so your statement that they were persisted with despite failure is totally wrong. The only time Sehwag was persisted despite failures was during Dravid's captaincy in 2006. Raina was persisted with by Dravid/Chappel and then dropped after some time. He was brought back in late 2008. So don't try to give undue credit to anyone else for Sehwag's sucess.
