Bad Team Selection: lots of politics
by cool sree on Dec 10, 2009 11:40 AM

igh time India looks for bowlers who use their common sense and is consistent. Don't look for a bowler who has taken lots of wickets in Ranji trophi, but go by the natural talent and consistency and an economic bowler who is suited for T20. The entire blame should go to selectors and Dhoni who chose this team. Why is India's best allrounders like Irfan Pathan and Praveen kumar not included in the team? Surely politics is played in cricket starting from selectors to Dhoni who only supports his own selected guys. I cant understand the reason Irfan Pathan is not given a chance. Infact he was not that bad only lost some pace. But was really good with the bad and a useful allrounder which India lacks. But some people dont want him in team and thrown out. Guys like Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma are given numerous chances with out any result and still playing in the team because of the reason only selectors and Dhoni know and due to strong influence. Its high time politics is seperated from Cricket as it will spoil the sport.

It is very interesting to see that people who were praising this very Indian team is now writing all these after just one loss in 20-20. We must understand that Srilanka is a great team and it will not be possible to defeat them in every match. Please be mature guys.

Mr.Sudeep,
What you have told is correct. Please read my post after the australian series.
DEJECTED FANS:
Going by the various comments by fans, it seems like that India has lost its war against Pakistan or China. Very Funny, because after the third one dayer (India were 2-1 up), everybody including out great Ravi Shastri was telling about a 6-1 sweep for India. But, suddenly everything has changed and now the Indian team/ selectors are blamed.
If one has any logic, Indian Team except for the bad defeat in the 6th ODI, almost won all the matches, that too against a world class team like Australia, considering their bench strength to be the best in the world. So, there is nothing to lose hope except for a few changes in the team.

There should be no place for Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan, Rahul Dravid etc in the ODI, 20-20 format. Ishanth Sharma can be tried only after an year.
If we follow this, we can win most of our matches, including against this world champion Australian team.
We can definitely easily win against Sri Lanka. Then everybody will again sing praises about the Indian team and dream about 2011 world cup even which the Australians are not thinking about except the mad Indian media, commentators and some poor fans.

Now, the same cycle has started again after just one loss to a best side (Sri Lanka).

"There should be no place for Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan, Rahul Dravid etc in the ODI, 20-20 format. " I agree with Munaf patel not to be picked in team but cant understand what wrong did Rahul Dravid and Irfan Pathan do if you compare them with other players like Rohit Sharma and Ishant sharma who never performed consistently inspite of numerous chances given to them. If we look at the history of match winning knocks Rahul dravid and Irfan has more match winning knocks than Rohit and Ishant. I have not seen any Indian player who is consistent and determined than Rahul Dravid. Infact I rate him as the best ever player in all forms of game (he is not given chances in T20 but he proved in IPL) for India.

Mr.Dsouza,
It is unfair to critisize the australian for today's poor showing. But, BCCI did a foolish thing in sacking Robin Singh-a selfless cricketeer as the fielding coach after the Australian ODI series.
Robin Singh was unlucky/treated wrongly as a fielding coach as he was treated as a player.

Robin singh was one of the genuine ODI allrounder who did not get many chances due to useless selection policies of the BCCI in the past.
Compared to the 90's & early part of 2000, now a days the selection polilcy is somewhat better and fair under the chairmanship of Dilip Vengsarkar and Kris Srikanth.

Dhoni fielding placements
by gaurav manchanda on Dec 10, 2009 01:29 AM  | Hide replies

i m not satisfied with dhoni's fielding placements. In death overs there was no long-on and no long-off. Sangakaara & Kapugedra hits number of lofted shots which land in no-men region (long-on, long-off). in the last 5 overs, lankan batsmen scored around 35 or 40 runsin that area.

But when india was batting sangakaara placed long-on and long-off. raina, yuvi & yusuf pathan all got caught either on LONG-ON or on LONG-OFF.

Re: Re: Dhoni fielding placements

he has become stubborn. In the league matches of this IPL, he batted at number 3 for 4 times & the result was his low score with a strike rate of around 75. he didnt learnt from these mistakes & he again batted at number 3 in the semi-final against royal challengers. In that match he scored 26 runs off 32 deliveries & CSK lost the match.

He also shown his stubornness by going with TOTALLY OUT OF FORM Jacob Oram in all 15 matches (including semi-final). Jacon Oram only bowled 14-15 overs in all the 15 matches and took only 5 to 6 wickets. Jacob oram's highest score was 33 in the IPL and 2nd highest was 16.
Dhoni had GEORGE BAILEY in the squad but Dhoni played him only for 2 matches in which he scored 15 & 30 runs. Dhoni also had Michael Hussey for the last 5 league matches (including semi-final) but he continued with OUT OF FORM Jacob Oram.

If any captain have a player like MICHAEL HUSSEY in his 15 men squad then he will definitely play HUSSEY even in place of a player like gambhir, dhoni, De Villiers, Duminy, Sangakaara and Kevin Pietersen.

IS THERE IS ANY ONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD WHO CAN JUSTIFY PICKING JACOB ORAM AHEAD OF MICHAEL HUSSEY IN THE PLAYING XI OF ODI or T20?

Gaurav, you are on to something. More and more folks are opening their eyes to Dhoni's inadequacies, which become glaring at the most inopportune moment for the team.

The impression I am getting is that Dhoni feels very insecure or threatened in the company of extremely talented players...which in his mind (and given serious technical limitations in him as a batsman and a wicketkeeper) may eclipse him and bring his captainship skills, if not basic cricketing skills, under deeper scrutiny.

Which is why if he has a NON ESTABLISHED (if he is already established it difficult to do much) bowler or batsman, that does wonders in a match of a few matches, Dhoni will try and restrict opporutnities for that person to shine. This is easier to achieve with bowlers because as a captain he can toss the ball to someone else (as he tossed the ball to Zaheer and kept Sreesanth out of the attack for most of the inning in Wankhede..inspite of the probing and economical spell by Sreesanth on day 4).

The same applies to the quizzical situation you bring about in your comments.

I feel it all boils down to one thing..Dhoni's realization that he is a bits and pieces cricketer (neither is he a top notch Wicket keeper like Engineer or Kirmani, nor is he a classic batsman like Sachin or Dravid, or a dashing rare gem with prodigous talent like Sehwag). Getting into the team, leave alone becoming Captain of Indian team, was beyond his wildest dreams, and he worries about losing it all.

True. Picking Jacob Oram in the CSK was a huge mistake & Blunder.
Also, the erratic (Full Tosses) of Morkel cost CSK their matches.

I am THRILLED that Dhoni's crooked plans backfired!!!
by exoticbronze on Dec 10, 2009 01:10 AM  | Hide replies

Dhoni's tricks will get exposed one by one. All these 1 billion strong herd of sheep - Indian fans - will slowly realize how Dhoni is feasting all glory that was carefully built by preceding Captains ESPECIALLY GANGULY!

Ganguly was not into regionalism or other groupism. He was NOT an insecure person. He knew his technical limitations as a batsman (He is no Tendulkar or Dravid) but that man excelled with the bat bring the best out of his talent. He was an even more talented captain, who was excellent at spotting talent and giving them the confidence to perform - WHETHER THEY WERE BENGALI OR NOT!

This Dhoni prefers to have his Hindi wallahs only! His shrewd manouvering to get non Hindi wallahs and established senior players (about him he is again insecure about even if they are from Delhi...like Sehwag) out of the team will get exposed soon..when deep resentment builds up among players, and 'Captain worshipping' and NOT TALENT would be the primary criteria to stay on in the team. This Bhajji and Dhoni jodi is out to ruin Indian cricket.

AFter Sreesant got the 5 wicket haul, I had predicted on Rediff boards TWO things - 1) That he will soon get Sreesanth out of matches using some ridiculous excuse in front of the media and I specified 'Upset Stomach' by way of example. I was stunned to read that this is the EXACT excuse he used.

2) Soon he will start making Sehwag's life miserable and shake his confidence, to eventually get him out of the team.

Mr Exoti,
You are a morwe regionilistic person than your dada Ganguly.
Leave Dhoni,
Everybody knows about Saurab Ganguly for his regionalism, favouritism, Bossism,Autocratic behaviour and other cheap tactics he had made inside india and also abroad with the help of Jagmohan Dalmia. Once dalmia was out, he even went against him and agin patched up with dalmia once he again came back to power.
Ganguly was a daring captin but do not hide his ugly intentions with your mask.
The most selfish person was ganguly,he was caption of the team only because of Dalmia and was righly thrown out because of the help of one Austtralian, greg chappel.

So how many Bengalis did 'regionalistic' Ganguly bring into and/or encourage to flourish in the team?

Last time I checked Sehwag was not a Bengali, but the guy keeps praising Ganguly's leadership and for persisting with Sehwag. Infact Sehwag says his turning point as a cricketer came due to Ganguly spotting Sehwag's talent to be an opener and discussing it with Sehwag at lenght (without imposing it on Sehwag). Sehwag says he will remain ever indebted to Ganguly's leadership. (This was in response to a question comparing leadership styles of Dhoni and Ganguly!).

Ditto with Sachin. In a recent interview when asked to compare Ganguly's captaincy with Dhoni's, Sachin said, "I am not into comparing two individuals, every one is different". Then he went on to praise Ganguly (and not Dhoni) by saying, "This much I will say, most decision taken by Ganguly on the field were SPOT ON correct!".

Stop this regional nonsense when someone like me brings out a line of though so different from the herd of 'Dhoni worshippers'. This is the beginning of a steep downtrend for INdian Cricket.

Dhoni can hide behind the achievements of this team that was nurtured and nourished by seniors like Ganguly, Sachin, Dravid, Sehwag, Kumble, Laxman etc. HOwever it is not an unlimited bank account for him to keep withdrawing from, without putting stuff into nurture it further!

His games to remove non 'Yes Sir, NO Sir' players (like Sreesanth) and estblished icons like Sehwag will ruin things

100% correct. Ganguly never got into the regional politics, and groomed and encouraged cricketers only going by their talent.

All those Ganguly haters (and blind Dhoni followers) need to chill some. Dhoni is basking in the results of the hard work put in by his predecessors over the years - principal among them Saurav Ganguly.

Sehwag would be out of team India after World Cup! Those of you reading this please make a mental note about this, and recall this when Sehwag decides to hand his boots soon after the world cup! The guy has too much class to openly spill the beans about the intense politics of Dhoni, so Sehwag will maintain his dignity and remain quiet. Already if you guys notice, in every interview he appreciates Ganguly's leadership in reposing the confidence in Sehwag, and brining out the best in Sehwag. In the present setup Sehwag is lucky to have Gary Kirsten else Dhoni leadership would have already ruined Sehwag's focus. A player like Sehwag needs just one thing to be at peak performance - The full backing of his captain that results in optimum self confidence. As K Srikkanth rightly said "Sehwag is a CONFIDENCE player". Players like Sehwag come once in 50 years, and are a combination of skill (which many other batsmen may have), and self confidence (Which very FEW batsmen have...do you think a Sachin or a Dravid would play a reverse sweep or a hook to complete 250 or 300? NO! Sehwag completed his 250 with a reverse sweep! And will hook if the ball is 'hook'able even if he is on 299..instead of waiting through 15 dot balls to get to his 300! That is a CONFIDENCE player). Dhoni knows that and will slowly begin chipping away at Sehwag's ocnfidence.

Now you will say how? Simple. By spoiling Sehwag's rhythm. The most likely way would be by changing Sehwag's batting order, and end his form

"how many players from Jharkhand did Dhoni favour to be in the Indian side."

LOL..are there any players in Jharkhand. YOu got one Dhoni from that hinterland. Which is why he is getting all his non performing Hindi wallahs Sharmajis. Did I not make that clear previously. (Now unless Dhoni gets someone from Jharkhand, or possibly from his own 'gully', it wont satisy you. Why, even so you will say 'but he is not from Dhoni's home, so Dhoni is being fair'. Sheeple like you will start 'baa'ying a different tune as soon as this team's fotunes start going downhill...and soon!

LOL! Since you could NOT name a Bengali player that Ganguly brought in (to support your accusation about Ganguly being 'regionalistic') what do you bring as evidence?! You quote Lok Sabha Speaker talking about Ganguly's expulision as your best evidence of Ganguly being 'regionalistic'. LOL! Is that the best you could come up with?!! Hilarious stuff!!!

So you think that if you state Somnath Chatterjee is a 'Shameless speaker' then you have successfully tarred Ganguly! And you are not regionalistic!

Nice to hear that you are a True Indian fan.
Anyway to refresh the memory of the 'True Indian Supporter' that you are, I am copying and pasting your comment (which incidentally is from this same thread/article).

yusuf with his beard looks like a talibani...i am ashamed as an indian to have this terrorist in the team.."

Then Faseeh Aamir responded with the following comment upset about this guy calling Yusuf a terrorist:

I am very depressed with your comment on Yusuf. Infact your comment reflects your feeling against the muslims. You people r responsible for the rift that exists in between hindus and muslims.Rubbish mentality. I am ashamed aswell after knowing the fact that there r people who thinks like you."

Then YOU 'Rahul Bajaaj' chimed in with this comment:
