the perfect delivery
by vinay on Jun 23, 2008 10:10 PM  | Hide replies

it was a joy to watch that delivery from sandhu. he bowled 2 super outswingers previously to greenige, who left them to go to the keeper. the third delivery was pitched on the same spots but instead of outswinger, it swung back. it was joy to see a player of the calibre of greenige fooled by sandhu.

After this series, India also won Rothmans Cup , Benson and Hedges , Sharjah Series and other tournaments. It was not a fluke team.

'83 victory good for public morale in a chaotic land
by timepass on Jun 23, 2008 04:20 PM

More than anything else, what '83 victory achieved was rekindle passion in the game among the masses and provide a channel for relaxation in a hellish land. I agree we are a nation which pathetically lacks sporting culture and competence and cricket is a convinient sport played by a few nations where we sort of "excel" and promote ordinary folks to demi-god status. The country has so many deep rooted problems, lack of progressive thinking, emotional fools, and problems beyond repair, cricket provided a good diversion. Hope young generation focus more on positive development and not bogged down by stupid emotions of previous generations. I do not want to see us celebrate T20 win 24 years down the line. This can happen only in India.

Determination
by Suyash Chaturvedi on Jun 23, 2008 04:04 PM

Our 1983 team was full of determination and courage. We had defeated WI once before that final and every time we see that whenever our cricketers play for their self respect they win. The same case happened with Australi recently. We do nt wanted to come out as a looser once again in Aus and after Symond's and Hayden's monkey business I was sure that Indian Team will not let Aus go so easily in ODI and the same happened. So just 1 thing to say always support Indian team coz this is the only sport which unites our India.

true blue, no comparision with soccer. soccer finals may b played by 16 countries. but even that 16 hv to qualify to b in the finals during qualifying round. Unlike ckt, where all test playing nations hv got the birth right to play the world cup.

Even for world cup cricket there is a qualifying round where all associated members of ICC (non-test playing countries) play and the top 2 (or 6 in last WC) qualify for the main event. There are 16 associated members in addition to 10 test playing World Cup does not mean all countries of the world participate, it is called so because any cricket playing nation (who are members of ICC) can play, it they qualify. By your definition why is there a rugby world cup? How many countries participate in that?

What a night it was!
by sultan of swing on Jun 23, 2008 03:42 PM

I was 8 and a bit.Growing up in the back of the beyond. My role model was the only paanwala- he was also a fast bowler- at the bus stop of the village township.I had heard the commentary of that famous Indian victory that year at Berbice in March- mostly due to the 72 off 38 balls by Kapil and of course Gavaskar's 90 off 117.But then to a young mind England was still epitome of cricket.I was delighted when we made it to the semis. But my fear was that we were playing England. It was foregone for me that we won't win the semis.I didn't listen to the commentary. The next morning I rushed to the paanwala to know about the result. And when he told me that we had beaten England by 6 wickets, somehow I knew that we will win the Cup.West Indies was beatable. We had already beaten the mighty ones twice in that year. And the 5 test match series earlier that year was rather close despite the 0-2 loss.We had turned in some good batting and bowling performances in that series. There was no TV at home.I remember Patil's drive on his knee- and off Roberts I think- Sandhu's wicket and that remarkable catch by Kapil.Stolen moments from the only TV in town that was 3 kilometers from my house. We were jittery during the rearguard action of Marshal and Dujon. My dad, my bro and I knew we had won when Dujon was bowled. It was now a matter of time.I remember telling my mom who was sleeping that we had won the Cup. Cricket in India has come a long way since then. But what a night it was in that village town!
