Prudential World Cup 1983

I still cant forget that memorable moment which is still green & fresh. I was in 10th Std. Doordarshan was showing the match and after the 1st wicket the match could not bee seen in T.V. we were listening to the commentary when Viv & Desmond Haynes were playing & already made a partnership of 50 runs, but one man that is "Kapil" who cannot be forgotten till India & Indian Cricketing History is there, who took an very important catch of Sir Viv & then wickets started fumbling and then History was created. Hats of to the 1983 Indian Team Members after 25 years it is still greenish in the memories of all real Indians.

Hi Mamen, do u remember this..? During the break, there was a cut in the TV transmission. And during that break, Windies were 1 down or so. And Viv was going great guns. During that time, there was a program 'Rafi ke saath ek shaam'. I still remember that song from Baiju-Bawra - 'O duniya ke rakhwale, sun dard bare mere naale'. It was as if Rafi was praying for some divine intervention for India. And the divine did happen. Next when the transmission of the match resumed, Windies were 5 down for abt 70 or 80 odd. And that night, the sound of crackers, told the world India had achieved the impossible. But I think we can never get such moments back in our lives, bcos today there is so much of overdose of cricket, that any victory will not taste that sweet. Moreover , today the game is played with less of passion, and more of fashion.

I pity all cricket fans who has nothing but only 83 memories to cherish,,LOL!!
I am sure u'll have to be pleased with only world cup victory...Damn sure,Its not gonna happen again...we r loosers even in the game of cricket which requires the least physical fitness...least sportmanship...list goes on.
83 victory was a complete fluke...next series we lost 5-0 to WI!!!..amazing champs.

Don't ever say the 1983 was fluke. People saying this for years now. If it is by fluke, India would not have won so many cups later on from 1983 t0 1986. Yes the west indies team is formidable one. Do you know we beat them twice in that world cup out of three matches. The same thing againgst Australia also. We did beat them twice our of three matches. After the prudential world cup we won the world series cup in Australia under the captainship of Gavaskar. And in the following year we were semi finalists along with Pakistan ,England, And Australia. These are very few examples.
If the young generation people have seen the bowling bpwling of Roberts, marshalls holdings and Garners you people ever wont say that it was won by fluke.

Get your stats right Mr. Desh ka Gaddar, we never lost by 5-0, bcos we did drew a couple of those Test matches. Remember 236 n.o by Gavaskar in Madras ? And even the 2nd test match at Delhi, when Gavaskar equalled Don's record of 29 centuries. True, we lost badly. But what about our great Tendulkars, Dada's and the like ? How many world cups did they bring home in all these years from 92 ? Dont forget the 83 team beat one of the all time great teams in history twice in the 83 Cup. So, they could not have been pushovers to achieve that. The important thing was more than ability they played with passion, when it was required the most. So dont talk like a desh ka gaddar now...

Though I don't agree with the views of Johny Gaddar, he has got his stats right, Mr Rajesh. He's not talking about the Test match series that followed. That series we lost 0-3. Kanpur, Ahmedabad and Calcutta. 1st, 3rd and 5th. We did lose the ODI series 0-5. Srinagar, Baroda, Indore, Jamshedpur and Guwahati. Though we were close in the 1st one at Srinagar in a curtailed low scoring game. There was no D/L then. It was straight forward run rate. So even while batting second, they won by 28 runs!

Y desk ka gaddar???I pity u guys for linking cricket to patriotism..never understood this concept..we all know that we have a team which plays for BCCI...it does not uses our flag nor sings national anthem...Do u know abt it???...dont act like a crazy guy!!!

AND MOROVER...THERE HAS BEEN SUCH a degrdation of this sport...my god..if sachin would have been in the team of 83..it would hav never won, although he might have been the Man of the series...blah blah blah..
One kind suggestion - DONT LINK THIS STUPID GANE TO PATRIOSTISM!!!

We have fought over everthing Mr. Johny. Criket is perhaps one of the few things which still unites us in many ways. People care a damn whether the team is under BCCI or something else. Are u blind not to see those thousands waving the tricolor in the stadiums ? How many BCCI flags have you ever seen in your life apart from the one that flutters in front of their offices..? You seem to be more stupid than the game itself..

You are right Johny Gaddar....it was a fluke !! But one cannot rule out the great desire and determination shown by the Indian team in the final to win the cup. However I would still rate it as a mere fluke, because India was never at the level. And the next series India was trashed 5-0 on home conditions !!! After that and till today we are nipple suckers at world cup events.

Michael....once again wrong...we never lost 5-0..! Check the stats.. The man who wins the race is not the stronger or the weaker man, but the man who wins is the man who thinks he can..! Show me how many 'fluke' we could manage with all those world record holders in the Indian side all those years..?? Agreed, no team was up to the level of West Indies those days, but then the same team lost only to us twice in the whole tournament, and no body else..! The least we can do is to give credit where it is due. Dont forget that even the greatest batsman Gavaskar just managed only 60 runs in the entire 83 World cup.

I was in front of Soney TV which was brought from USA by our Landlord. We were about 10 - 12 members in front of the TV have enjoyed like any thing in my Life.It was very Memorable day. Man of Match award to Jimmy Amarnath, opening batting of Srikanth and Sandhu,Sunil Gavaskar, Boweling of Sandip Patil,it was win of Team spirit and We are proud of that win. After that cricket has never gone back. After that win our Indian cricket progressed just like mountain Everest. After that each Captain, who have given leadership, till date was very fantastic and high standard. Because of their hard work, now we are in this stage. Thanks to every body. Regards.... TC Mamen

I can still remember, im those days there were no televisions. We were depended on radio only.I was in the 8th std at that time. When we played against zimbabwe we lost 5 wickets for just 17 runs and we all thought definately were going to loose that match very badly, live these days, I went to watch a school cricket match being played. All my friends were started saying the same thing. But the next day we could not beleive our eyes when we happend to see the news paper. As Mr. Sandhu said, I will also rate this innings as the best innings ever being played around the world considering the situation.
Another great thing about the 1983 team was they were very good fielders also. From 1983 to 1988 we have seen a lot of direct hits from the boundaries. Srikanth often break the stumps when ever a batsman attempts to take a single. They were simply gtreat. Hats off to them.

Hey ashish,
Like to take on us in a game of cricket..?? Lets see how well u can perform with all that young blood in you. Dont forget, in 25 yrs, India had only 2 decent world cups, one was in 87, the team led by the same Kapil which narrowly missed a final berth. The other was, 2003 , in S.Africa, runners up position. The rest were all disastorous performances, notwithstanding all those so called great Indian batsmen in the side.
