Kapil Dev is a greatest sportsman and a very nice person too
by Arvin Bali on Jun 22, 2008 09:03 PM  | Hide replies

Kapil Dev is one of the best all rounders India ever had. To those people who have written nothing but negative comments about him, I want to ask how many of you have ever played even for a good club, forget about a state or national cricket. Yes, cricket is a team game, but that knock of 175 against Zimbabwe saved India no matter what people want to think. It is not easy to captain a team at a young age of just about 23 and a half. What Kapil has given to Indian Cricket is simply "The Best" of his life. He is a man who deserves the respect of every Indian cricket lover.

tell me if kapil was such a great captain how come he lost the series 5-0 to west indieas just 6 months after the world cup and test series 3-0 and lost his captaincy in the process. don't get taken in by the world cup hype. no doubt kapil is one of thelegends of india but he was never the best sporstsman that india has ever produced as during his later years he was very much a staunted bowler just being in the team to break hadlee's record.

mr. chaliya, you are wrong. For most part of his career he was outstanding. It was only during the late years that his bowling went down due to burnout. He was the only fast bowler India had for over a decade and single handedly changed the Indian bowling, he was the first Indian pace bowler to take 100, 200, 300 and 400 wickets.Dont downplay his achievements. He is perhaps the greatest Indian cricketer ever for his sheer natural ability and can walk into the team purely as a batsman, bowler or a fielder. If India lost 5-0 in ODI and 3-0 in tests it was because WI were the best at that time. India beat WI 3 times in 1983 out of 9 times they played that year in ODI(no mean achievement at that time). The 1983 WC made cricket even more popular. Dont try to find faults with everything, perhaps glass is always half full for you.

And just to correct, the comment above refers to Kapil being the best all rounder and the best captain.

Looking back at that catch of Richards
by Chaliya on Jun 22, 2008 04:40 PM  | Hide replies

Those days they used to hype the catch of Richards taken by Kapil so much. But looking back, this catch looks to be a normal one. Nothing great about it. You just had to keep your eyes on the ball, thats it. Otherwise you had sufficient time to judge the catch.

u really don't know a shit abt cricket...compare it to the beauitiful slip catches sunny took in the same game..have u seen catch of srikanth of javed miandad in 1984 test series when miandad was at 99 score. have u seen jadeja's catch in 1992 world cup of border? and i am not even getting into catches of recent years where indians have caught some amazing catches. compared to all this, that catch was pretty simple.

dear chalia,
its not the atheletism of this catch that matters u have to consider the backdrop as well this catch turned the match indias way and surely considering the fitness level of those days it was pretty great catch remember it was pre jonty days and people were not exactly expected to be great catchers. and for your info running backword for a cach make any catch 200 % difficult due to shear angle of neck while you try to keep your eys on ball.
and dont forget it was catch of the king. just think about the drop of gibbs. india could have easily been on loosing side without that catch.

as i said it was a tough catch considering the criticality of the situation and the batsman like richards in question. but kapil had sufficient time to make the ground backwards as the ball had really been hit up. i have seen lot of good catches, beleive me, in the yesteryears like the srikanth catch i mentioned in 1984 or the catches of sunny in sharjah while defending a low score of 125 against pak in rothmans cup in 1985. these were pre jonty days only. all i am saying is just becoz it was world cup final and it was viv richards' wicket this catch is hyped beyond limits.

Mr.Chaliye, Looking at TV it appears very easy, but imagine Kapil had to run around 25 yards backwards, keeping eye on the ball, facing the sun etc. The fact that you consider this catch to be easy speaks volumes about Kapil athleticism that he makes difficult catches look easy. Ask any good fielder how difficult it is to take catch running in the direction of the ball. And you cannot compare outfield catches with slip ones. Yes Sunil took extraordinary catches in the slips in the Rothman's cup (he took 4 of them for which he was given MOM too) but that does not belitte Kapils outstanding catch.

Yeah Kapil best fluke day for u
by Chaliya on Jun 22, 2008 04:26 PM  | Hide replies

coz we all know after the fluke world cup win, u lost 5-0 to the west indies at home the same year. it was indeed ur day. we know u did nothing after 1984 when u were just in the team to break hadlee's record. u had declined after 1984 as a bowler. compare it to unfortrunate sachin who did so well for india in 3 world cups but team was not good enuf to win world cup. atleast sachin and his team started winning consistently against all teams unlike u who had this one fluke win and keep repeating the same win for 25 yrs now.

compare his one day of ecstacy to the thousands of such ecstacies provided by sachin since 1989. so what if he has not won the cup, its a team effort. sachin played well in 3 of the 5 world cups he played and single handedly took india to final of 2003 world cup. with sachin, the no. of matches won by india in onedayers increased dramatically increasing the passion for the game in india. it was sachin who is responsible for the cricket craze in india. i remember those days when after world cup win, indians started thinking india will win everything but it was not to be the case. they lost home test series 3-0 to west indies the same year and were whitewashed in oneday series. compare that to the number of wins in total sachin has given against champion team like australia in the 90s.

chalia do u know pele ? you do

do you know platini ? probably not reason platini never won a world cup. indians have not exactly did wonders in world cups since than but we have only been avg. kapil's team was in semis in 87 so was sachins team in 96 kapils team won it in 83 sachins team managed final in 2003 apart from that i dont see sachin doing anyehing exeptional in the world cups. and as far as flukes are concered india defeated kenya in the 2003 semi not exactly a great test of a team though i feel that a semi is a semi and similarly a WC win is WC win. in the similar tone you can say that india won the T20 in fluke as well.

its all about rising on the moment and the 1% luck we may say was with us on that day. and remeber we defeated WI Twice in 83 in fact india was the only team to defeat them till than in WC.

mr. soni, u are giving very few instances in kapil's defence. did u follow the home series versus west indies in 1983 after world cup? india were humiliated out and out by the same windies who had lost to india in world cup. this series proved india's win in world cup was just a fluke as was its one win at berbice in 1983 u are talking abt. this series even resulted in kapil losing his captaincy just six months after the world cup because of the humiliating way we lost. india had 2 good tournaments in 1983 and 1985 apart from that they were a pretty mediocre side in onedayers till 1990 as they used to lose consistently to pakistan, australia, west indies, new zealand etc. compare that to the sachin days post 1990 when he single handedly used to make india win against aus(desert storm in 1998 and titan cup in 1996 against giants south africa and australia). winning against new zealand and england became so easy after sachin with help of azhar started playing for india. india became a true oneday team only after sachin started opening in 1994 and india started winning lot of matches. it was sachin who brought the passion and craze of indians treating the game as religion starting from 1996. the state in which the crowds throng indian stadiums now for onedayers and even tests is due to sachin only. so what if he did not win the world cup. tell me which is better winning 75% of ur matches against good teams or losing 75% matches against good teams and one fluke world cup win as u

... tell me which is better winning 75% of ur matches against good teams or losing 75% matches against good teams and one fluke world cup win as underdogs. which is better for indian cricket? and btw, sachin was top scorer in 2 world cups in 96 and 2003 whereas apart from 175 kapil did not do much in 1983 world cup it was roger binny and srikkanth who did well. its just a matter of coincidence that sachin has not won a world cup as its a team game as shown by the indian team which was a good collective unit in 1983 and 1985. it does not diminish in any way the legacy of sachin which is much more than thatof sunny or kapil going by the way he developed the passion for the game in india. this is my opinion and u are free to disagree.

and fyi i consider juhan kryuff of netherlands as the best footballer ever to have played. and u know what he did not win a single world cup and holland best came to finals of world cup with him and lost in 1974. any true football fan will know abt platini and kryuff only idiots with lil knowledge of the game will consider "striker" pele as better than them just like how the idiot under 20 youngsters of india will never know what sachin did in the 90s and will go for useless hyped players like dhobi just because he won a tom tom 20-20 so-called world cup.

u both fighting with each other. dost take the positive point not negtive.

it is good for india. since than india has won none. really it was a good moment for india.

take it easy.

sachin no doubt best batsman and had done best in his all career but just think he always fail in final game and india lose. so do consider 1983 victory that brought by kapil and his team mates.
