Song of Raina
by Calspadeaspade on Feb 20, 2008 07:37 PM

lagtha nahin hai Dil mera
Khel ki intazaar me
Bench pe baite is haal me
na paye baari me
Keh do in hasrathon se
Kahi ore jaa base
Ithni hi bench pe baite baite
Guzarthi huyi zindagi me ( Lagtha nahin)
Itna hai bad nazib mere
Khelne ke liye
Ek baar mauka na mili
is cricket ki duniyame
Lagtha nahin hai dil mera

Uthappa should be rested and bring Raina/Tiwary/Sehwag
by sajin mv on Feb 20, 2008 11:31 AM  | Hide replies

It is high time Mr.Robin Uthappa has scored some good runs instead he just keep on going with captains rock support. While players like Suresh Raina,Manoj Tiwary are warming the side bench, how we can give this much opportunities. His V style batting and strange foot work will not give runs adding a recent form slump in domestic seasons where he just averaged below 25.

Robin Uthappa is no longer earned a position in indian team at the present scenario where Suresh Raina,Manoj Tiwary are warming the side bench. How ridiculous is this?He has not been performing for a long time. Will his supporters can single out his performances except one match winning knock against England and one in debut match. That's alll about Uthappa. He has to go to Domestic tournaments and gain more experience and should come back like Kaif,Parthiv,Raina.I am not against Uthappa but he is out of form and he should be taken care, give some opportunities and throw him forever. He has to come back but now he should be out.

Dhoni - a great leader of men
by Ashish Kumar on Feb 20, 2008 11:24 AM  | Hide replies

Indian cricket has seen some great captains. Some of them are Lala Amarnath, G. S. Ramchand, Polly Umrigar and may be a few others. The last great was Saurav Ganguly who was lost to the country for unfortunate reasons. India has fortunately found out a gem of a captain in M.S. Dhoni. He has an excellent personality as well as a great temperament. He is a strong willed person as indeed a captain should be and is also no non-sense man. I can only congratulate his parents and his teachers (of DAV School) for bringing up such a person who, I believe, will bring more laurels to India in the years to come. In my own rating, I place him above Saurav Ganguly, though till his arrival on the scene I had always considered Saurav to be the greatest Indian captain ever. He comes from a stratum of society who does not have protected existence and is , therefore, mentally tougher. His inning yesterday was a revelation of his mental strength.

Its too early to praise so much about Dhoni as a Captain. No denial about his Batsmanship and even wicketkeeping. This is the beginning and he has to learn a lot like respecting seniors of the team, keeping egos a side, keep own whims and fancies a side in team selection. The sooner he learns this better he will be or else you know for sure what happened to Ganguly could happen to him also, may be very soon.

I am unable to agree with you on your point about respecting seniors. Respect for seniors is a fine attribute in drawing room talk but a sportsman has to deliver in field and earn respect irrespective of his seniority. If Ganguly can make 100 runs at a strike rate of 75 and Gambhir can do that at a strile rate of 100 then a captain with team's victory in mind will opt for the latter. This of course is valid if both are equally consistent. Then comes contribution as a fielder and bowler. Over all, a captain has to evaluate the contribution of a player in totality, keeping an eye on his expected longevity, while selecting his side. Culturally, Indians are not agressive people and agression is a basic attribute for winning. We need to look at efforts made for winning from a different perspective. Ganguly himself worked on this principle and became the most successful Indian captain. If he earned the ires of various pressure groups, he should consider himself a 'shahid' for that is the way to be a winner. Today he has been axed on the same principles. He may, however, make a come back if the players who have replaced him, do not ultimately prove to be more valuable than him. Ganguly knows that and he is hoping for that. As to opinions of Chappels and Shastri, I wd say that the former are not well-wishers of Indian cricket. They even wanted sachin to retire.

Just tell me how many match winners Dhoni has promoted so far.He wants the players who should play under him and his shadow. He has forgotten that one cant succeed with such attitude and with such yesman mates in the team.Ganguly was arrogant but at times he still used wisdom of his team mates where as Dhoni does not see beyond his nose. This bad quality of his will bring his downfall, may be sooner if he does not change.

We all learn as we travel through the lanes of life. Dhoni too has many things to learn. I was only talking of innate qualities. It is not to suggest that he is Mr. Perfect. Immediately after winning T20, Dhoni said "give me 14 men who would stand in front of a truck for me". By all means it is an arrogant statement. But his performance thereafter has vindicated him. He showed no qualms about dr0pping Ganguly during Australia ODI or dropping even Dravid after the 6th ODI (where Dravid had failed to deliver) and then went ahead with winning the 7th ODI. This man is focussed on winning like Arjuna was focussed on the fish's eye. Nothing else seems to matter to him. He will last till he is able to deliver. At first signs of failure the disgruntled powers will look for his throat. But so far his methods have worked.

Personally I am a great fan of Dhoni as a Cricketor and now even a wicketkeeper but as far as Captaincy is concerned am not comfortable with what he is doing. He himself is setting different standards for same category players. He is very smart to understand what is of his interest and his team.He does not mind to take a decision at the cost of team interest if his very own interest is intact.Time and again he has taken bad decisions which have cost India some matches which could have been easily won.

Dear Tushar,
I wd be interested to know the instances u r referring to. A captain has to take decisions on his view of things. They cannot always be correct. The captain whose decisions turn out to be correct on more occasions shd b considered to be better one. It seems u consider some of his decisions to be malafide I am unable to see any. He has certain views about certain players and decides the player to be relied upon accordingly. This is entirely proper and fair because as captain he will get the cheers or jeers. Just recall his decision to ask Joginder Sharma to bowl the last over instead of Harbhajan against Pak in T20 final. That was against conventional wisdom. But that is where u see flash of genius and such flashes only distinguish the extra-ordinary from the ordinary.

Match Winners
by Tushar Thanki on Feb 20, 2008 11:13 AM  | Hide replies

Every team needs atleast three to four match winners in the team.Their performances are seen over a period of time and not by mere two-three matches.Like Yuvraj,Sehwag is a utility player and a match winner. Why Dhoni is avoiding him is a big question. Is he scared of loosing captaincy to Sehwag. The players like Rohit Sharma,Robin Uthappa,P.Kumar are finding favour at the expense of players like Sehwag and Raina.Dhoni should realise the importance of match winners in the team and leave aside his whims and fancies and even jealousies in team selection.

Sahwag's game is based more on hand eye co-ordination than on sound technique. He has been a match winner in his youger days. With age catching up with him, he is no longer a match winner. His recent records bring this out. Please don't see politics where there is none. Dhoni is in the process of building a new Indian team. His trust in Yuvraj was vindicated yesterday. I guess his trust in Uthappa also will be proved sooner than later. He might try likes of Tiwari and others after having proved one set of individuals . I consider his approach to be correct. Every individual should be given adequate number of chances to either prove himself or to finally disprove himself.

Cricket is a game played by players displaying various techniques.Sehwag has his own unique technique. He is most successful Indian batsman on Australian soil and proved this time in test matches also.Basically what Dhoni does not realise is the difference of T20 players like Rohit,Robin from 50 over match players like Sehwag,Raina. He has given enough chances to others now he has to take chance with some others. The opinion of Ravi Shastri,Chappal brothers and like many is that Sehwag should always be the part of team. What Dhoni is trying to prove by resting him.

I heard Shewag him self telling some of his friends that he can not lost long because his strength is exceptional hand eye coordination rather than great tchnique which is bound to weaken in 3 years. I think it migh tbe the same with Dhoni as a batsman in a few years. If a future captain decides to drop him pwople can not complain. That is the way it should be. Right now he is very energetic and has the nerve of steel which is very heartening and needed for a team that is shaky.

And if he has used politics to eliminate persons who were responsible for India's recurring defeats, I will call it the politics of Kautilya which was the need of the hour. Finally, under Dhoni, Indian team has started winning more often.

Dhoni doesn't make India win on his shoulders.. funny.
Count you a single match he made india win? Well, you are commenting right now on the very story - "India pull off close win over Sri Lanka".. :-)
Guess who stayed there till the end?
Back to Ricky Ponting - he is currently not performing at all. Do you think he is basking in the glory of others shoulders or efforts - say, Michael Clarke, Adam Gilchrist etc.?..
Food for thought for you.. think it over. I'm sure you will get it.

Dhoni needs time to be a gud captain...
till date he hasnt won a single match to india.
At prsnt leaving yuvrj we cnt trust a single player in team to win india a match on his shoulders...
if yuvi fails , india loses nd if yuvi hits india wins...
but a player cnt show 100% efficiency...
yuvi cnt play all the time...
captin himself also need to show tht he cn makee india win...
greatst xample is ricky ponting...

Dhoni, you are a rare jewel in the crown of Indian cricket. Let the whole world talk rubbish about you. Let the media and experts criticise you day in and day out. Let fools and specialists question your decisions.

It is said that those who are focussed on their job, mission do not get distracted by such side scenes.

March on, unmindful of all these garbage.

I must confess that initially (when I heard you speak after T20 cup win) I also felt that you are an average captain who is propped and prompted by backdoor operators like professional managers. I thought your views were nothing but their scripts.

But once I heard your reply yesterday after your team's win over SL, regarding changing the batting order and bringing Pathan down the order, I was greatly impressed and understood that you are a man of true mettle.

Of course your vision, ideas, clarity and insight into matters cricket is beyond the comprehending capabilities of ordinary mortals masquerading as super experts on the game. I pity them.

Mr. Gouda. I sincerely hope Dhoni doesn't lose further matches. Coz if he does, your tune might change.
Rare jewel might become "Rear" something..
Focus on job might become "adamant" on his viewpoint/doesn't listen to others..
His vision/ideas/clarity might become "nonsense dreams"..

Yeah. I seriously hope he continues as a winning captain. For his sake, and yours too..

Dear Mr. Indian,
The FURTHER IN Yr message seems to suggest that Dhoni has been losing matches. This is not borne out by records. In fact his record would have been even better if he had taken the bold decision of leaving out players who are more a baggage than contributors long back. But there is time for everything. I see little possibility of Dhoni losing too many matches in future.
Did you notice that the great Saurav Ganguly used to win matches and finally lose out in finals only. It was because of sabotage born from internal rivalry. Dhoni is therefore entirely right in eliminating such potential saboteurs for building a match winning side.

Hey Ashish:
Let's all take balanced views here. That's what I was trying to tell Gouda.. That's what I'll tell you.
For your information, AFTER getting rid of the baggage, India lost to SL in this very tri-series, and then they lost again to Australia, in this very tri-series.
So take the cold with the warm, take the good with the not so good. Don't over praise to convert people in angels, and don't over blast to convert people into baggage either.. :-)
That's my simple message. If you can understand it. As to your very high expectation of "I don't see Dhoni losing too many matches".. well, it remains to be seen. Have you already made plans to watch Dhoni lift the VB cup? I haven't. I am taking it one match at a time, and enjoy good cricket - irrespective of who wins.
Cheers

Thanks for yr views Indian. U forgot to mention the wins over Sri Lanka and Australia in this very tri-series. The defeat to Sri Lanka was caused by divine intervention. I am sure u will agree with this view. According to Dhoni, but for his run out (caused by his injury) India wd hv won against Australia. We hv to see how much truth is there in such a claim in the match on the 24th. I am not too sure about Dhoni lifting the Cup but I wd certainly be shocked if India does not make to the final and after entering final, goes down tamely.
