What has Gambhir done outside T20 ?
by S Chandra on Nov 19, 2007 12:23 PM

He played this whole series at the top of the order and didnt score a single huge score ! He didnt help to win any matches this whole series.

He definately cant open the batting, he doesnt have the technique to open.

He opened in first 3 matches of the Aussie tour and didnt do anything, single digit scores.

Either team should look for new opener or bringing Ganguly back !

Rohit Sharma looks better than Gambhir, better technique while playing the short ball.

Gambhir tries to pull the short ball but doesnt have the technique for it and invariably gets out.

Plus Gambhir cant bowl.
Ne needs to be removed from the team.

If he cant perform in slow, low pitches of India, last 2 series he hasnt scored a single 100 or anything, how will be do in Australia ?

Big mouth Shoaib Malik
by indira on Nov 19, 2007 12:08 PM  | Hide replies

In the cricinfo site, Malik has said "I think India would be at a disadvantage, having a new captain who has to start afresh while I have been leading the side for quite a while. Though he [Kumble] is a great bowler I think we would start with an advantage." What does Malik think of himself? Though Kumble had never lead the side, he is one of our most experienced player and brought many wins to India during his illustrious career. Malik should understand that leading a side and performance are two different things. He is wrong if he thinks that leading his team for quiet some time will give him advantage and guarntee a series win. One can lead the side without success also.He has forgotten that Kumble has three other senoirs, who have high regard for him and will lend able support to their captain.

Pakis have never been big planners and strategists. They tend to put their big stupid foot in their mouths in the end almost every time they try to forecast a result. No wonder they won 3 major wars and also Kargil which was in their basket and never managed to keep it. The way they lost matches at twenty twenty shows how stupid they are! Shoaib is against a thinking individual as a captain in the form of Kumble who never had the skills of Warne or Murlitharan and yet managed to stay in the big league by thinking out his opponents big time! Malik has no idea what he is against an emotional fool that he is always creating controversies the moment he opens his mouth!!

Shoaib Malik is a shy guy who has been suddenly brought into limelight due to his captaincy. He seems to be a genuine guy who does not know how to talk in public. With time and experience he will learn and will become better. As of now, it is best to ignore whatever this guy says - It is his learning curve, so lets not go all guns blazing on him

Prakash you're right. Apart from being shy, he is not very fluent in English - so this makes it difficult for him to express himself the way he wants. No need to make a fuss about what he says..looks like he's a person with no intention to hurt anyone - much like sachin.

Looks Good
by prakash mohanasundaram on Nov 19, 2007 12:06 PM

Yesterday's match irrespective of the result has been a good one. This was a good chance to see the potential of players who were benched so far in this series
1) Sreesanth - should have been tried much earlier cos Zaheer has been pertty ordinary in the last couple of series. Sreesanth waserronous in his first spell but did well in the next spells. He bowled fast(149 kmph is pretty good) and was accurate which was rewarded by 3 wickets
2) Rohit Sharma - a good potential, has good technique and temperment. with age and experience he would only become better.
3) Praveen Kumar - reminds me of JP Yadav and Joginder Sharma. Only time has to tell
Its good to see lot of talent emerging in all departments. If nurtured well, we can be rest assured that some good times are ahead for the Indian Cricket team

Dont Start the Blame game..
by Jim on Nov 19, 2007 11:41 AM

In dead rubbers like these when Sehwag does not play he will be blamed and tagetted as a looser by ignorant ppl....they forget that he played an important role in the last match(which was a crucial one), and bocs of his free spirited strokeplay, Sachin started to bat confidently..... Sachin has always appeared in good nick when free strokers like Sehwag, laxman, are on other end...

Any crucual moment (eg, take any of the last 2 world cups itself...whenever India was in trouble he played aggresively) Veeru has always played when India needed him..

He is just showing his aggression towards game. nothing else. and we need that kind of aggression in our cricket team. he will be much successful in Down Under tour because that kind of pitches will suit him well. wait n watch down under tour in December this year.

Ganguly is the only International Rosagulla produced by the East Indians.Otherwise, they are only fit for Football that too till National level only, not International class.
The present Ganguly is too old and well past his best but the Rosagullas still want him to hang on in the Team.
I think he was dropped for the last ODI and may never be selected again.

Mature stud - can understand the point you want to make - that Ganguly cant be replaced with Uthappa..Well, everyon has a right to opinion. But don't know how "Idli" came in. Now, if it's in reference to someone being from a place where people eat Idli, (frankly i can't think of a place in India where they don't..unless it's a very remote place..somewhere..) i'm not surprised..Your name says it all..So you want to be recognised as "mature" eh? AND you have added the word "stud" with it...You know, maturity doesn't come by adding that word before another word that you think describes you..(and not to mention a word like stud)

Leave Sachin we do not have a replacement for Ganguly and Dravid
by amit singh on Nov 19, 2007 10:59 AM  | Hide replies

By looking the latest matches it is quite clear that we have really good talents knocking Indian team but none of them can be looked as a replacement even for Ganguly and Dravid leave Sachin cause he can be replaced only by one batsman that is by Sachin himself.None of them either Gambhir, Uthapa or anybody . They have got one or two gr8 innings but to become replacement for these three gr8 players u need to be consistent u will have to make runs at subcontinent dusty pitches as well as Bouncy tracks of Australia.

RE:RE:Leave Sachin we do not have a replacement for Ganguly and Dravid

May be your analysis is correct. But, the basic flaw in this team was that the team was packed with openers - Gambhir, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Uthappa and Shewag. While Ganguly did not play in the last match, all the other openers played. Ganguly and Tendulkar, who were the most experienced of the lot, will only open and never play in the middle order for reasons best known to them. If these two experienced players agree to play in the middle order and use their experience to guide the youngsters, then the youngsters like Gambhir, Uthappa etc. can open, which is their regular slot for their State teams. Remember, neither Ganguly nor Tendulkar open for their State teams. Their insistence is only when playing for India. Unfortunately, Gambhir, Shewag and Uthappa were played in the middle order in all the previous matches. In the final match, when the ball was jagging around, Ganguly did not play (perhaps conveniently dropped)and you had the youngsters like Gambhir and Uthappa playing as openers and no.3. All of a sudden they are asked to play the fast bowlers on a helpful track and both of them lost the plot. That is why it is important that youngsters are given regular slots and allowed to mature in those slots. We destroyed Kaif and Raina by moving them around and we are now in the process of doing the same to Uthappa, Gambhir, Shewag etc. When experienced Tendular and Ganguly themselves want a permanent slot, why should the youngsters be made sacrificial lambs? Food for thought.

RE:Leave Sachin we do not have a replacement for Ganguly and Dravid
by Vikas Joshi on Nov 19, 2007 12:37 PM
Dear Vasudevan
I think you got it wrong. Insistence of Ganguly and Tendulkar, if this is the case, to open the innings is correct because the fact of the matter is that they have done this consistently for so close to a decade now and they have been the most successful opening pair ever. They do not open for their states is true, but this only speaks about their flexiblity. Even Dravid does not keep wickets for Karnataka, but kept them in the one dayers did he not. So I feel there is no harm if Gambhir has to come as a middle order batsman. Also for your information Shewag was not an opener, he was converted in to one and as long as he was successful, he was persisted with. Now because he is going through a bad patch which I am sure he will overcome, he is being played in the middle overs. Remember the attacking bowlers when the ball swings are more dangerous in the first 20 overs, so if Sachin opens the innings it is best, Saurav, or Shewag, or Gambhir could be rotated depending on their form. But if Sourav is fit and willing then Sachin and Saurav is the best combination. What happened with Kaif was his bad luck and bad form both happened at the same time. He captains UP. He still has age on his side. Yuvi was also a passenger for sometime but now he has come in to his own, so will Kaif his time will come.

RE:Leave Sachin we do not have a replacement for Ganguly and Dravid
by VASUDEVAN V on Nov 19, 2007 01:03 PM
My point is simple. Allow the youngsters to grow into their slots without changing the slots frequently. You yourself say that Ganguly and Tendulkar have opened consistently for close to a decade. In other words, they have been given permanent slots and allowed to grow into it. If such experienced players should not be moved around, why should the youngsters be made sacrificial lambs. Otherwise, do not select 5 openers. Select two openers, one standby opener and the rest genuine middle order batsman. When it comes to Ganguly and Tendulkar, you want to be sacrosanct. But, you do not want to extend this to the youngsters. I still feel that both Tendulkar and Ganguly, with their vast experience and abilities, can play better match winning knocks in the middle order also. Only thing is, they may not have the opportunities to score centuries at will in the middle order!

What difference it makes whether tendulkar opens or comes down at number 4. Even if he has to come at number 4, he will be in the pavillion before 5th before. So its better he opens and stays there for a while instead of gambhir or uttappa or sehwag getting out in the first couple of overs
