Can the team management be stern and ask Sachin to play cricket or stay out and give others aa chance? They ddid it with Ganguly. Do they have the guts to do the same with Tendulkar?

Blame the star....
by Ramesh Menon on Jan 10, 2007 07:27 PM  | Hide replies

Yes, its true Sachin did not play to his true abilities in the tour. But lest you forget, he is still the second highest scorer in this tour. Memories are very very short. Prem Panicker seems to have developed a bias towards Sachin that was evident during the entire series. Every time Sachin did something good, Prem was pointing out his weak points in the match. Why do you kill a player like him? He tried hard..succeeded a few times and failed a few times.

200 runs in a series which saw only two centuries was not bad at all. But no, we have to blame him. We have to ensure he is out.

Tell me, if he is out of the Indian team, would we be happy? If he decided to retire, would we be rejoicing? Who would replace him?

Instead of suppoting him and helping him over his bad patch, we are crucifying him. With the support of people like Prem Panicker. Come on Mr.Panicker behave like a true cricket writer, not a biased Tendulkar basher!

Are you doing service or business? As you mentioned did only your hard work or hard try is rewarded or the results?

Take a leaf from Australian Cricketers
by Subramanian Rajappa on Jan 10, 2007 07:26 PM

Why do players like Sachin,Ganguly ,Laxman try to take a leaf from examples set by Australian Cricketers Like Steve Waugh,Shane Warne,Damien Martyn,Justin Langer ,Macgrath..who have the guts to retire in their peak .The Dignity lies as much in retiring on a high..Why wait till they end up tarnishing all the goods they have built to their name ....

The Naked and the Dead : Comments

Thanks for your wonderful summing up of India's tour to South Africa. It generated interesting comments, far more temperate and balanced than the discussions we were seeing on the subject a few months back. Seeing that every discussion was tuning into a for- and against-Ganguly, I stopped participating in such discussions. But, seeing what we have got so far, I felt encouraged to add my comments.

1. Re : Comeback Comments

You pointed out Jimmy Amarnath's case well. I must point out that there was a factual mistake - his series of ducks aganist West Indies was in 1984 after the World cup win, and his triumphant tours in Pakistan and the Carribean was in 1982/83, just before the World Cup, where he was acknowledged as World's best batsman against fast bowling.

The other batsman with many comeback stories was Sidhu, who was in and out of the team many times.

2. Re : Ganguly

Ganguly has done well for himself. He is a tremendous player, and I do feel the comments about his shortcomings against short deliveries usually overstates the case. One gets the impression that Ganguly can not play short bowling on the rib-cage. Even if that's true, in fact, no batsman ever was comfortable against accurate short-pitched bowling on the rib-cage. Besides, there is hardly a Harold Larwood in today's cricket. So, Ganguly's superlative strength outside Off-stump, and his finesse against spin are reasons enough to keep him in the team, anywhere.

In fact, the issue with Ganguly was that he was making too many mistakes outside the off in recent games. He has now lifted his game and improved against the spin, and that's what has made the difference.

The problem with him is that he still can not convert his 50s to 100s, and he still has a propensity of getting out shortly before or after the break.

Despite all the praises he is getting now, I still believe that he should not have been out of the team in the first place, and his key problems still remain.

You mean to say King of Calcutta has not learnt from his mistakes. That's absolutely accurate observation. For that matter our players cannot learn the killing instinct until our board prepares pitches as per the pitch standards abroad .Our Indian pithches are made to suit our spinners not the fast bowlers. So its not Ganguly's mistake.

Indian Cricket

We should remember most of the times Indian Team has always performed well against weak opponent or at home ground. In world cup from quarter final Indian Team has to play against good playing nations and not against Holland, Canada, UAE and Bangladesh.
I would like to request Government to pass a resolution for changing name of India Team. It should be Dravid's team or Chappel's team and not Indian Team. It is spoiling name of our motherland.

India in SA
by Michael Joshua on Jan 10, 2007 07:18 PM

It is true that the results in SA is hurting every cricket lover in India. It hurts more when all of us show our displeasure over the bad performance. Without doubt Indian batsmen have performed excellently in the past. Every player has a lean patch. Sometimes individually, sometimes collectively. Very unfortunately for India, our players collectively failed. Let's accept the failure gracefully and wish them good luck for the big events coming shortly. There's no enough time for postmortem. No time for big reshuffles. Have a quick analysis and get on with whatever comes. And I would like to nullify the feelings of my compatriots that Sachin has lost his fighting abilities. No, he hasn't. He will come back firing. Like Jayasuriya (after announcing his retirement), like Lara at the fag end of his career. Sachin still has a great future. Wish him good luck, wish the team good luck. Pray that we pose a threat to all the other teams including Australia. Good luck India.

The Horror of Indian Cricket abroad
by dan rufus on Jan 10, 2007 07:11 PM  | Hide replies

The Indian team has come to such a stage that they even get a bill for dressing room damages.
If Australia had to celebrate the way we did in SA,they would have been bankrupt by now.

Why are we persisiting with Sehwag, who has done absolutely nothing in the recent past. Don't we have other players ?

It is time to kick V.Sehwag out of the team
by on Jan 10, 2007 07:00 PM

I have only one question regarding all these fiasco, Does V.Sehwag has a political backup that he is still in the team. Why we did not pick up G.Gambhir to play in the third test before V.Sehwag. Although G.Gambhir did well in one of the practice match. This is the time to reshuffle otherwise in near future we will not be competing against Australia but Zimbabwe and Ireland.
