DD and Nimbus
by Ghochu Singh on Feb 16, 2007 01:23 PM  | Hide replies

Why Mr. Sharad/BCCI Power made such a contract with Nimbus where common people's interest ignored,-this is the most imp QN.
Mr Power,-why he is not in favour of common people???? Why he is in favour of BCCI only???
Why Mr Power is interested to work as BCCI cheif? Why politicians are not concentrating
in under 19 yrs players so that country gets more talented players in future. Why politicians are more interested in international etc level????

BCCI is a profit-making entity with cricket as its means to make profit...and there is nothing wrong with it! Anybody who feels BCCI should think about common man's interest are being very naive and show a complete lack of understanding of commerce and capitalism. Wake Up!!
BCCI clearly understand the cricket-craze in India and are doing quite well to exploit it to the full.
Its not just BCCI, every sports body all around the world do the same. After England won the Ashes in 2005, ECB grabbed the opportunity to offer broadcast rights for matches played in England from free-to-air TV to Sky Sport (about ?40 a month subscription!). An average cricket fan would have to fork out atleast ?100 to setup Sky and pay ?40 to watch cricket but ECB have only done what is best for their business.

Likewise I will not blame BCCI, but the gov. who could not step in at the right time (which is prior to signing the contract) to regulate cricket broadcast rights if they felt it was an important issue.

Because BCCI is the richest sports body and more money will come from that.

Where ever politicians involved, interests of common people are ignored. They just want money. Where ever the money comes from they will enter in to that and play the politics.

DD should be allowed to telecast only in the terestrial
by PremKumar VS on Feb 16, 2007 08:47 AM

DD should telecast live cricet matches only in the terastrial network not through satelite. because many cable operators and DTH operators are benefited by this. now they are no need to by pay channels (neo) but they can very pay for this

Stop blaming BCCI if yah dunno half the story!
by Mohd Haris on Feb 16, 2007 01:35 AM  | Hide replies

You ignorant fools, the BCCI is going to get it share of the revenue irrespective of whether DD Sports airs the match or Cable TV channels air them (Neo, ESPN, etc.) The reason why government has ordered them to share feeds with DD is not because they want the coverage to reach the rural masses where only DD is usually available, but because it would bring in ads to DD. (read MONEY). Big time. Its using its governmental authority of extract revenue from private broadcasters for a sugar-coated "welfare of rural Indians" reason.

Instead of expanding cheaper cable TV services even in the rural segment, they're bringing in digital quality CAS and DTH systems, which even urban masses are unwilling to switch to, in a number of cases.

If the government would've cared about sharing matters of national interest, hockey would've been at least in the spotlight by now. But they won't share hockey rights like they do cricket, because hockey games wont pull in one-tenth as much revenue.

Horrible DD- Beggars are being Choosers
by Harshal Shah on Feb 15, 2007 08:34 PM  | Hide replies

DD is one of the most stupid channel in the history of television. Look at its content i its 50 yrs old. Transmission is pathetic and content absolutely rubbish. Some one should scrap dd for god sake. They want to make money from cricket telecast. They are not bothered about people in general. Had they been bothered about people they would have improved in last 50 yrs. I think dd should not be provided free content..

Nimbus should provide dd
1. Encrypted signal.
2. Should not allow piracy of signal by dd.
3. DD should not insert their commerials in between.

DD reaches everywhere without extra money.
Games should not be a prerogative for few to watch. It should come via DD.
Besides sports DD is the mouthpiece of the government. Government can use this media to enlighten and inform people and pass on important messages, which other channel may not necessarily do.
Too many private channels are on a crazy ride for sensational news, irrelevant gossip, unnecessary details of film actors or other celebrities. They can do anything to raise their viewership or TRP rating.
Profit and competition may not be the only concern for DD and some amount of social commitment may be expected in general.
If the reasons are not convincing, do not watch DD.
You can use your remote the way you like.

DD should pay for the feed. If DD does not pay, then it should not be allowed to insert advertisements.
They enjoyed FREE RIDE for too long with very poor content.
If they have social commitment to fulfill, then they should not try to earn money by using FREE signal.
Private channel have paid too much of money for the cricket match.
If DD and Govt, think they should have FREE cricket feed, let them ban BCCI from auctioning cricket feed to channels.
Then let us see how we maintain such high profile in cricket.
DD- sore losers...

I agree DD is the mouthpiece of the government but cant quite fathom what the government can "enlighten" us through DD? Is it on how to cheat, bully, do a breach of contract!
Cricket on TV is a luxury not a necessity. If the government cares for everyone...let them provide food, shelter and education to those cannot afford. Free cricket must the last in the priority!

DD is definitely not for the elite people. It is for the masses. Agreed that it lacks in quality. Nevertheless it has immense reach in the rural areas where there are no facilities of cable operations. Also agreed to the fact that Cricket on TV is a luxury but the right to entertainment should not be breached because the masses are not elite people.
However, i guess and opine that DD is cheating and blackmailing the other private operators in the name of national interest and patriotism for the rights which they have bought pouring in so much of money. Any private outfit works for its revenue - for that matter any individual. One can not find fault with the private operators for their interest in revenue earning.
This is a subject where a good debate is required - i feel.

Good thing happening
by Indra Sengupta on Feb 15, 2007 08:06 PM  | Hide replies

The delayed telecast created a lot of fun.
a) When the match was on at the Eden Gardens one guy outside was watching DD version on a nearby TV set. He commented that the crowd do not understand cricket and their roaring do not synchronise with the action on the TV.
It took me sometime to make him understand the delayed feed theory.
b)Over enthusiasts had surf to the news channels in the between over intervals to know the actual poitions and the charm was lost to a great extent.
c)Why all the time such a row is created on the eve of the matches that one match was missed altogether!
d) Hope the ordinance or the law incorporating the provisions of ordinance in due course settles the issue forever.
e) Games can never be the guarded secret of a select few, whatever be the reason.
