Is there an alternative ?
by Anil Rao on Mar 18, 2006 03:39 AM

Cricketers and Actors may not be the ideal models but who are the contemporary alternatives ?

BJP is not clean either, as the entire labor community in India rejected them. There has to be a reason for such a rejection. During the Indian Diaspora meeting they gave preferenace to NRIs from USA and Europe, totally ignoring NRIs from the Gulf. BJP doesn\'t seem to be having genuine individuals either.

Dude..where's my freedom
by Ramanand on Mar 18, 2006 03:38 AM

I beg to differ. Role models are to be looked up to mould one's character not ideology. Although, there's no doubt that Chandrashekar Azad or Bhagat Singh are great models to have, 'entertainers' like Saurav & Rahul emobody dedication and hardwork in what they do best. Rajnath Singh has clearly not heard of the ideal 'Work is worship' where you become the best in whatever you do, not necessarily in just fighting for your country. Is Mr.Singh implying Dravid et.al have not struggled, made sacrifices or sweat blood to be where they are today in representing our nation? He should have a look around & see people like Dharaj Pillay, Leander Paes or Amitabh Bachchan who've made it to the top from scratch, crossing hurdles, through sheer determination; you don't have to die for your country to be a role model. His statement is an insult to our athletes in Commonwealth games who've put in months of toil to stand on that podium to receive a medal for India; of course Mr.Singh would argue the shooters were not shooting at Britishers, just dummy targets. Rajnath Singh is a dinosaur still stuck up in the 19th century. So could someone please wake him up to a free country where I can choose.

True...but there are no one else to be an Idol
by Shyamak on Mar 18, 2006 03:18 AM

Yes it is very much true that our generation is taking up Filmstars and Cricketers a Idols. But if you look around there are no one else to make ourself proud of. Politicians are corrupt..so they are far away from being ideal, businessmen are also in the same loop, the government machinary is also part of this corrupt cirlce. So whom do we look up for being an idol.

This is when we find Cricketers like Dravid winning for the country and making us proud and Amir Khan making inspiring film like 'Rang de Basanti'.

Whoever is saying that Cricketers/Filmstars cant be idols then why dont they themselves do something to be ideals for us. Why dont they take up the bastion of showing the path. Clean up the system. Clean up politics. Clean up beauracracy.

I would say " Preach what you Practice".

Jai Hind

I disagree
by KP on Mar 18, 2006 02:56 AM

With all due respects to Raj ji, I disagree with his comments, anyone can be an idea when you can recognize what you need to absorb from that individual, In this regards I would like to say cricketers like Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly are the utmost champions in their fields, and the disciple that is needed to achieve that position is a monumental and second to none. Todays Youth should be inclined towards those meritous qualities and identify and horne their respective skills, that when out country can be a majestic power not by following blindly wat the political leaders say or envision for their personal profits in general.

Why Not?
by Sarim Momin on Mar 18, 2006 02:44 AM

Today we are not exactly in the situation that respected Bhagat Singh was. We need someone we can relate to, in order to emulate them. We need people who motivate us to make India proud IN TODAY'S SCENARIO and people like Rahul Dravid are the people we look upto.

Ask politicians to shut up!
They themselves are neither role models nor do they provide entertainment nor do they do anything for the country. Ask them to give up their life for the nation and you will see them running for cover.
Hypocrites!!

As for Rahuls, Pathans, Teldulkars, Dhonis, Munaafs... you guys Rock! And we Indians (All of India) is damn proud of you! Thanx for being our role models!

well said

I totally agree with Mr. Rajnath Singh. They should not be ideals for the youth. They are just entertaining us. One good thing about them is they are dedicated to their profession.

Can cricketers be role models?
by Satya on Mar 18, 2006 01:51 AM

Mr. Singh,
I don't understand why you have to compare Dravid and Chandrasekhar Azad. If you want youth to be like Azad do you mean to say you have to take a 'Kranthi' path to show your Nationalism? Ridiculous Mr. Singh! Azad can be respected for his great sacrifice, but not an ideal for present youth. Present youth should drive the country towards better future. That is what it is doing. You needed freedom not to make a sacrifice for cause you don't know about but to avoid situations where you have to sacrifice like Azad.
I don't know if you really understand that you are misleading Youth by making them emotional to the fantasies of revolution rather than inspiring them to become an icon like Dravid.
Think global, Mr. Singh., You seam to have forgotten "Vasudaika Kutumbakam"). Or you have it as one of your own fantasies to achieve through Nationalism. World is watching you now as you are in that chair where Global leaders like Vajpayee were once in. Understand liberty and interdependence rather than Struggle and Freedom.
Entertainers and cricketers are doing their best job by promoting India, its diversity and Pride. And you are not! Neither your fantasies would.

by Diksun on Mar 18, 2006 12:59 AM

No no!! Not the Freedom fighters, nor any Indian army not anybody else its YOU, yes YOU whose idea to put this here in the Cricket Message Board would be the ROLE MODEL in future. Now Sourav Ganguly is out from the news for last few weeks and you have started this BSing? Tomorrow Lallu would say something, and you'll start another controversy. What are you trying to prove here. Just PATHETIC.

Hope youll publish this.
