on being role models
by sankaran on Mar 18, 2006 08:36 AM

Seeking a dialogue or response on a non subject is the present day media aberation and publishing the results of such a study is again the present day media obsession and perversion.

Cricket and cricketers can never ever be role models for humans. At best they are time pass/entertainment objects and at worst they are poison to human activity and human mind. Unfortunately, the country has come to such a pass that even parliament stops to watch a test match and responds to its score!
I expect rediff to have a better sense than conduct an equivalent of survey about the good/ill effects of smoking and drinking amongst smokers and drunkards.

Don't Belittle Sports Excellence
by udayan on Mar 18, 2006 08:27 AM

National personality is defined by collective national charector. And while innovators, activists national guard personnel concretely elevate our sense of national pride, the contribution from sports achievers can not be belittled. In a ultra competitive world, it takes a lot to achive sports pinnacle. Who wouldn't wish to emulate Tiger Woods, Ian Thorp or Dravid. Mr. Nath, high time you guys renounce short sighted translations for your political gains, your India Shining campaign wasn't wrong, you were dulling national institutions and harmonya and were thrown out. Harping unnecessary hindutva won' bring u guys back. So be a nice sport...cheeer for all achievers

Saurav & Dravid are worth emulating than Rajnath & Advani...
by satya on Mar 18, 2006 08:04 AM

Both Sourav & Dravid have various traits that are worth emulating; and there may be some that may not be so good to follow; but in any case, they have made us all proud & they are better role models than most politicians, especially the likes of Advani & Rajnath & others in the BJP, RSS & Sangh Parivar. Ours cricketers only cause our nation to unite, whereas these communal politicians are out to foment division & cause bloodshed. Their fieriest speeches & courageous actions are far from worth emulating.

Rajnath is correct
by adit on Mar 18, 2006 07:26 AM

Hi,

Rajnath Singh's statements are 100% correct. We cant idealize film stars or cricketers. We can see their effort how they reached top spots and can put effort in our goals/ambitions by following principles of our great freedom fighters like Bhagat, Azad, Bose, Gandhi, Gokhale and others.

Thanks,
Adit

Cricketeers can definatly be roll models
by vinod on Mar 18, 2006 04:50 AM

Hi

I truly think crickteers can be roll models
A person like our skipper rahul dravid can be definatly be a roll model
The way rahul conducts himself on the field quietly going about his business can definatly serve as a model for countries youth . Considering statistics alone he averages 66 in test matches in the last 4 years. He was awarded ICC player of the year in the inaugural event 2 years back. Today in a NDTV interview Sir Geoffrey stated rahul is the best batsmen in the world(this includes greats like poting lara........)
I suppose if such modesty of a man inspite of such acheivements speak of a roll model, then i dont know what else will?
Now as far as rajnath singh statement, our freedom fighters bhagath singh , azad are roll models . I am definatly in for it . Considering what these people did at such a young age ,they can definatly be roll models for todays youth.
But i dont think hes right in saying crickteers cannot be roll models. With people like sachin rahul anil around Cricketeers just for entertainment . No way mr president of BJP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why cant they be?
by sandeep on Mar 18, 2006 04:36 AM

Why cant they be treated as role models? Now its not the time to fight wars and Dravid and Ganguly have shown how to be successful under preassure and in this generation we want people who can show how to emerge as a winner in tough circumstances, I dont find any fault in them getting added as role models.

Idols are always contemporary!
by Ashish on Mar 18, 2006 04:33 AM

Dear Mr. Rajnath Singh

A generation always loks at idols which are contemporary and not of yesteryears, because the idols need to be such who have performed their deeds in the current times, and hence are believable as well as can be followed.

Unfortunately for the current generation, apart from the sport stars ( & believe me that not all are enamoured ny cricketers, there is a fairly large following for F1 car drivers as well as international footballers too!), a few corporate czars and film stars, there is no one else who has been able to set example for this..and while it is easy to blame only politicians for this, but I feel its the population at large to be blames, specially those who are in 50s to 70s that they did not create right environment during their youth for the next generation.

yup,
he is right...cricketer or film star can not be role model..only people like Chandrashkhar Azad or Bhagat Singh can be an idol or person like Narayana Murthy, Bill Gates, Einstein should be an ideal person.

Role Models et al
by Brijesh Khergamker on Mar 18, 2006 04:18 AM

Children will make a role model from those who are around them and not those who existed years ago. Every era had national leaders who could be looked up to. So, earlier primary school children had national leaders with work ethics, honesty, integrity, humility, and all those nice things. They.
Unfortunately todays primary school children think that national leaders are a joke.

If they want to find role models for work ethics, honesty, determination... they need to look elsewhere. Dravid and Ganguly are certainly better than Laloo and Mulayam in those areas.

Thank God for cricketers like Dravid , Tendulkar, Steve Waugh Ganguly et al. Who else would be an example of a public figure who could be looked up to?

PS: Steve Waugh probably ends up doing more work for India than most politicians. Isnt that a shame for politicians?
