I think that the author has touched few valid points regarding the situation that has arisen owing to the spat between ganguly and Chappel. Here I want to add one or two things which, if not sorted out immediately, may lead to crisis when the thins for the team may not be at the height, it expects to reach. Does the coach enjoy the right to cange a team or captain which the selectors have chosen? We all agree that the dressing room conversation should not come out in the public but why we all avoid the issue of Chappel asking Ganguly to step down going outside his authority? Again, is it the coach, like in other team games, who should reign supreme in Indian cricket team management or cricket being a different game which lasts for a long period of time should have the captain to have the last say?

Hi! The question at that time was not the right of Coach to question the capacity of a Captain. It was a question of a Coach (Who has a specific role in assessing capacity of a player) to replying in a frank manner to an unfit player. There was a commitment taken from the Coach at the time of his appointment to build a team for the future.

If Ganguly was not a captain, does he merit a place in the playing eleven just as a player only on the basis of Statistics? If statistics are the only criteria, Vinod Kambli must be playing for India (He has a better batting average in tests than Ganguly's and of same age as Ganguly).

Why are you forgetting a simple logic of the coach and highlighting the right of the coach?

Poor you prem and your gangly mia

This whole article looks like a desparate attempt to 'howl with sorrow' for pawar having won the election, by a gangly fan. HUH, poor you dude.
All those undeserving players and booing-fans would be ousted from anywhere near to the vicinity-of cricket, in India.
People could mature before they sit down to write articles that sounds like a wail for nothing!!!

Hi Kevin,

May be you are getting funds for ur livelihood from Australia or UK. Remember these fans are paying their hard earned money for a game played by few nations & unfortunately led by few white masters.

Cheer buddy for your views. What a great Indian are you? Cheers!

Gautam (an Indian Bengali by nature)

What Pawar needs to do

Dear Sri. Panikkar,
Well said and well written. You have written
quote:in cleaning up the heartburn within the team, in cleaning up the factionalism in the selection process, in cleaning up the mess the television rights issue is in, in cleaning up the financial mismanagement that pervades the administration unquote
which spells out clearly the senseless mistakes of Dalmia led faction and more importantly, the dictatorship like attitude of Dalmiya and his trusted leiutenant Bindra. But, don't you think Saurav need to take full blame for what all have happened? It is he who set the ball rolling by disclosing dressing room talk to the media which boomeranged on him. He without any doubt was getting into the same mould as Dalmia and senselessly thought he will be his dictatorship-successor! If you ask me, I would say that once he found out that what he started was a huge mistake, he should have come public with an unconditional apology which probably would have doused the fire and would have helped Indian Cricket. No doubt he is ( or is it 'was'?)a class player and his knowledge of the game would be an asset to future Indian Cricket. Even now it is not late to aplogise

Mr. Pawar is argurbly one of the best administrator we have in India. He has proved that he is sound administrator during Mumbai-riotes/bomb blast & during latur/western maharashtra earth quake.
Coz of his sound administrative skills, Mumbai stock exchange was operational within 48 hrs of the blast.
I have no doubt that he will do justice with the post & bring in lot of transparancy.
Also, being in the cabinet, he will make good use of his power to get many things done & make the BCCI, one of the finest cricketing body in the world...all the best Mr. Pawar.

Pawar Heads BCCI
by K G Vallabhan on Nov 30, 2005 10:52 AM

Pawar is getting paid by the people of India for his services as the country's cabinet minister looking after the ministry Agriculture. What is he doing in the Cricket Board? As the Board's president he is expected to work full time there. His Ministry is bound to suffer. Do we have some law preventing Ministers to take up another job (even honorary). And nobody is going to believe that he is going to serve as the BCCI president for free.

WHAT SHARAD PAWAR NEEDS TO DO
by nanaiah on Nov 30, 2005 10:50 AM

Sharad Pawar should go strictly by Saurav Ganguly's record as a Cricketer. Not as a Captain, Not as someone who took up cudgels with Chappell, not as someone who shuffled the batting order to suit his insecurities. No. There should be no talk of Captaincy for Sourav any more. Lot of bad blood has already flowed.

Go by his credentials as a batsman, allrounder. Give him a series. If he comes back with a bang, appreciate it. If he does not, let him know the youngsters need to fill his place. That which they have already done.

He could probably replace Sachin Tendulkar, who seems to have lost his touch. Let his tennis elbow heal for some more time.

are we in safe hands
by random on Nov 30, 2005 10:39 AM

Prem,

After getting over from one notorious 'D'(almia) company we are in the hands of another 'D'(ungarpur) company. With all respect to Mr.Pawar and his abilities as a political leader its to be seen how much of the time he is being able to devote to the BCCI. BCCI is in dire straits. Its election has become a national fiasco with infinite litigations. Every one seem to say that they are lover of the game.

Since early 90's players have started to take sidings in borad politics. Earlier it was Azhar with Dungarpur and then Sourav with Dalmia. What both of them forgot over the time was they deserve a place in the team for their cricket and not for their association with the power brokers. I feel bad for Sourav, never a true fan of his cricketing abilities but for his arrogance on and off the fields. We needed a rough and tough person like him who would not be so good to the Aussies. who would rather have the balls to hit them hard on his face, who would back each player and get the best out of them.

Experience players back should give the necessary mixture of experience and youth. They have a lot to contribute. This should be test of the " Original D(ravid) company"

My simple suggestion to Mr. Pawar is "not to involve politics into cricket".

Polarisation in Country according to Prem Paniker
by Brajesh Kumar on Nov 30, 2005 09:48 AM

I don't see any among the cricket lovers of the country in two groups. Except for West Bengal, whole of the country is with Dravid and Greg Chappel.

For some people it seems an individual comes first then the Country(remember Eden Gardens Pitch and Crowd),but that is limited to some people only not the whole country(remember Mumbai,Bangalore,hyderabad,nagpur,Mohali.....and the list continues).
