Since Kasprowicz practiced throwing left-handed, has he become a better fielder?Has Yuvjay not shown his brilliance in the past with stunning catches?Agreed that his technique is no way close to that of a test opener. But is that point enough to take credits away from his fielding?

What is the point in comparing Mcgrath's accuracy with Indian bowlers? Is there any other Australian bowler who can pitch six balls of an over on the same four square feet of the pitch in the manner that their compatriot does?It would be ignorance to compare the breathtaking accuracy of Mcgrath against any other bowler!Has Pathan not shown his skills as a swing bowler in the few seasons he had played?

If Laxman tries to play most balls towards the mid-wicket region, that is his natural game.Is it not the same area where he has plundered hundreds of runs against the Aussies in the earlier seasons? Is it worth to cut his natural instincts and then realize that he is stuck without scoring?

Is it really possible to revert to the system of amateurs?Does it happen in any other game?If at all we get die-hard-amateurs,do we discard the players who are no-more-amateurs and go out on a new search soon?

Do they earn their keep ?

If this article cannot work as an eye opener for our country's cricket fans, then I am sorry to say that these are not very encouraging signs for our future cricket.

I would go on to say that we, great cricket loving fans, are also responsible for this sort of current performance by our cricket team because of our indifference towards this ongoing lacklusture performance.

I would support Mr. Lavakare on each and every remark he has made on John Wright and Sourav Ganguly. You are more than 100% accurate and correct on each of these remarks.

The fact is most of our cricket players have absolutely nothing to do with the emotions of their fellow countrymen.

My wait for such a superb article is over.

Congratulations Mr.Arvind Lavakare.

Keep it up.

old argument-please move on.
by Ramya on Oct 20, 2004 01:46 AM

Do not rehash the same old argument about the pay the players get again and again. They lost a test match-fine-its not the end of the world.
The fact of life is that in every sport with a mass following the players will get paid the way our cricketers do.
Players of the calibre of each and every member of the Indian team do not deserve to be called nincompoops in flannels.

Cricket Pundits...
by Pushpak on Oct 19, 2004 11:01 PM

I think this article reflects the emotional and short-sighted nature of most indian cricket 'pundits'/journalists.

Since the Indian team has lost the last couple of tests against world champs Australia, these pundits are working overtime. They forget the excellent performance of the current Indian team under Saurav Ganguly, Dravid and John Wright in Pakistan and Australia and reaching 2003 World Cup finals.

Historically India has been an under-performer in every sport. Compared to this , the record of Indian cricket team under current Captain and Coach is far better over last 2-3 years. So let us not blame current Captain and Coach after every defeat.....

Shouldn't we be also professional in cricket?
by Abhay on Oct 19, 2004 04:17 PM

Dear Indians

Sincere Regards to you. Well i here want to discuss more important issue than what is being discussed.

A question for all of you to answer:

Would you like Indian cricket team to be Professional bringing laurels to India or want a team which is built on hope and predictions, sympathies which will always bring unexpected results always good or bad?

This is what our selectors even need to think. Well if we talk about the professionally selected and managed team then only those in good form and giving performances will be part of the team. Those good for one version of the team wont necessarily be promoted into other version(eg. Laxman is a misfit for One Dayers). The strength of second bench for India would increase and once the big stars retire from the game or miss a tournament or so because of injuries wont affect the team performance at all, this is what Austrailians follow and reason behind their success.

I really dont understand why people are not able to differentiate between Showing confidence in Players and Making Them Complacent. The position once fixed in the team only few perform and that is why they are at the top of any ratings.

Do they earn their keep?
by tl on Oct 18, 2004 10:09 PM

Why does self-proclaimed geniuses of cricket like Aravind come up with usual "do they earn their keep" type of columns only when everytime we see such mediocre performances frm the indian cricket team. Did we hear frm this genius when we reached the finals of the world cup after a diasastrous pre-world cup matches? did we hear from our genius when india beat australia in the adelaide test match and came yet again so close to gettign the series? did we hear frm our genius when india beat pakistan in pakistan?
does he mean to say that if the indian cricketres are paid lesser than they get now, they could be accepted for such below-par performances? does it mean that we could all be proud of the indian hockey team just beacuase it gets paid so muc lesser? or we can all be proud of the indian olympics team for coming the last in almost all the events just beacuse there wasnt much money involved there?? what exactly is his point?
finally, how is our genius such a multi-faceted learned man that he can comment with as much confidence abt the india-kashmir issues, the presidential debates of the usa as much as cricket? is rediff.com so journalistically bankrupt??

Do They earn Their Keep
by Devendra Shastri on Oct 18, 2004 05:38 PM

I fully agree with the views expressed by Mr.Arvind Lavakare. I also wish to add that it is the cricket administrators of this country who have been responsible to bring the game to this situation.

The great Mr.Jagmohan Dalmiya (Dollormia), has been instrumental in total commercialisation of cricket at the cost of the game. Obviously the cricketers cannot b blamed entirely, to have fallen in this trap. They should adopt a policy of reward and punishment. If they lose or do not perform there should be fines and penalties imposed. This possibly may bring about a good change.
