Do they earn their keep...
by Abhishek Shankar on Oct 18, 2004 01:32 AM

Totally agree...put some yardsticks for these millionaires & some restrictions also.

For ex. they should not be allowed to do public advertisements before 50 matches because what happens is that they perform in 1 or 2 match, get the publicity & then instead of going on to improve on their negative aspects start doing advertisements. Result they fail miserably in next matches but since they have performed in a few matches earlier they are kept in the team.

Ganguly should also be answerable as to why he is persisting for a particular player despite of his weaknesses & failures.

Their annual payment system should be based on their performance & not fixed salary system.

1-datapoint analysis...
by A Ravi on Oct 17, 2004 10:44 AM

Dear Rediff,
Why do you publish articles that base their analysis
on a single datapoint, in this case performance in
a match? Any sane analysis in the world takes a
reasonable sample of data before subjecting it to
analysis and extracting useful data. The masala writing
style should not be the only yardstick to select articles to publish!

comments on - DO THEY EARN THEIR KEEP
by Dr. Madhusudhanan Narasimhan on Oct 16, 2004 11:25 PM

Well its the right time for the players and the top cricketing officials to go through the article - DO THEY EARN THEIR KEEP to realize the proportion of importance that the indian cricketers are given. Of course, we the followers of cricket are not criticising the players, nevertheless its not unfair either from the supporters persepective in expecting them to show quality professionalism in terms of consistent performance. Its the high time for Indian cricket to be flexible and reasonable in giving chance to other talented lads instead of relying on those who had been awarded the demi-god status for their once-in-a-while performance. More importantly, we are not intimidated by the results but feeling ridiculous for the fact, that some players who are in the team for their batting abilities are incapable of scoring even 30 odd runs consistently has been given a strong place in the side. Its not great either to say that captain is instrumental in jelling the unit, after all he should also perform diligently and lead the team from the front. Finally, as suggested the better idea to make the players to earn their keep is to pay them strictly on the basis of their performance.

Though this is deirected at Mr. Arvind Lavakare, he who has written the article "Do they earn their keep?", there is a small message for the Indian Cricket Team and their supporters.

The article has done its bit in pointing out the flaws in the Indian Cricket Team and their salaries in correlation to their performance. But what is the point in stating the facts, I am sure most us know that!

What am I getting at is ...

The whole point of writing such an article in a public space is to get aleast some sort of positive message accross. What is that message?

Why should anyone other than BCCI be concerned about the Indian Team's salary? We, my friend, should be writing articles that send a message to our home crown and our team that we are backing them all the way and not trying to look down at them. No one ever plays to lose but someone has to. A defeat in itself is an indicator to each player to focus & motivate themselves so as to come up with a performance that fits their calibre. I am sure our cricket team is doing their bit to improve.

To the Indian Cricket Team:
You are doing great, but it can be better, so move up a gear & do what you do best ... GO WIN IT!

TOWER OF FAILURE
by Vicky on Oct 16, 2004 05:23 PM

I really wonder as to even why do some people say things like the Indian team has the best players in the world. Well on the records, they may be very good at performing having had the best of statistics. People have got to start reading between the lines. Why is it that a great player like Sachin Tendulkar, fails to score on a bowling wicket? The Indian wickets simply fall like a pack of cards when bowled to on a bowling wicket. Statistics have proved that in the best possible manner. People simply overlook what happened in Durban a few years back or in Newzealand 2 years back. Inviting the mighty & invincible aussies to your own land, in your conditions & only & only on the basis of your batting strength ( on a batting wicket) & achieving a victory would not even serve the purpose. A person like Kumble, I would say is just a buffet bowler. One can pick his line & make adjustments in the shot selection as ones own discretion. The fielding department sucks right to the core. Except for Yuvraj & Kaif I don't see any player in the HISTORY of the Indian team that has displayed even an effort to stop the ball from reaching the boundry. Maybe Azar & Jadeja could be exceptions to a certa

Puh-Leaze..give me a break...

I don't understand this trend among journalists to take things to the extreme, whether it be a victory or a loss. You are the same bunch of guys who get so excited each time there is a victory and the same guys who make such incendiary comments every time the team goes through the rut? I don't get it..are you jealous that cricketers make so much money? Sounds more like how Bishen Bedi criticizes the establishment just because he is jealous of how his generation did now have the same amount of money involved...
So according to your theory, for every sub-standard article that you write, you should take a cut in pay? Is that in right? Every time a person's marriage hits a setback, he/she have to think of divorce?
I used to think British journalists were the best when it comes to fickle-minded writing, but I guess we Indians are rapidly catching up.

You are too sarcastic
by Rajiv Shankar on Oct 16, 2004 01:37 PM

Sir,
Though your article hits hard at the Indian cricketers' performance, it sounds a bit too sarcastic. You cannot expect a team to win all matches they play. The people in India expect the Indian team to win each and every match which adds to the already existing pressures in the game. And worst of all, a loss is not taken sportively here. If the Aussie team loses a match you can still see them smiling, but will that be the case with the Indian team. That's because of the unwanted pressure that the people of this country put on them.

So, lets stop being sarcastic and hope for the best from the Indian team. I found your article to be ok, hitting hard at some important issues surrounding Indian cricket, but on the whole the sarcastic feeling makes me feel that your article was just pathetic.

Do they earn their keep?

No Mr. Aravind Lavakare, Not at all. You are right
and Congratulations for writing such an article.

1) Lakshman has got more opportunity than any Indian
Cricket, despite repeated failures. Why? His
fielding and running between the wicket is a pity
to watch.

2) Yuvaraj has no patience to be a test player.

3) Chopra-Sehwag we tried and tested and they were
quite successful too. Why they have been changed?

4) Parthiv is the only lucky cricketer who earned
about Rs. 85 lakhs without playing a single match
at such a younger age. He is the only direct
recruit to the Indian team without even playing
Ranji Trophy. But he still plays well, let alone
his wicket keeping.

5) Gangully never urges the players, simply standing
in the field as mere watcher biting his nails.

6) Indian team lacks dedication. They give up easily.
All top batsmen losing form altogether something
one cannot digest.

7) Tendulkar, I believe, will not make any difference
to the team, as he is a zero man for quite some
time.

Let the media stop giving hype to these dukly players who sometimes stoops even low than school cricket.

Tks.

Too Good...But very critical

If this is going to be the yardstick to measure our cricketers performance.
then God save India
