STOP CRICKET...
by RA on Oct 14, 2004 01:44 AM

Guys I want to tell you all who are so obsessed with the test match cricket between Ind vs Aus that once even I was so obsessed with the game. But then I realised that THE WHOLE GAME IS FIXED. And India will never be the one that will inspire. The whole nation is obsessed with the game that doesnt involve any physical activity and goes on and on endlessly for 5 days and it is all bore. The country could become more physically fit and active if the top game of the country is soccer or any other faster games. They provide more excitement within 2 to 3 hours and they inspire the viewers to take up the game that makes them fitter and agile and healthier. So ppl of India JAAGO...STOP PLAYING AND WATCHING CRICKET...CRICKET IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH (rather is doent do anything)

Maybe not

They've earned millions without giving back much "returns" to the fans. Nothing wrong with making that kind of money. Several of them have become legends by way of impressive records. It is called playing to the galleries and works well if the galleries have people who care more for the day in progress than cricket. Not many fans carry home the bad things on the field. But good things are always remembered. If a player scores one 50 and 10 ducks, people will talk about the 50 more often. And if you have enough clout in the board like some, you can go a long way with once-in-a-while-performances.

We are in the Cenozoic era, into the late tertiary period and the great Dinos have all but perished. Cricket is more of a masala now than anything in the subcontinent. For the average fan, a match is more like a standard Amitabh movie, a day's worth of entertainment after hard days of work and pressures of daily life. One fine day Sehwag will click, and so will Ganguly and all will be well. There will be a series with Bangladesh or Kenya with tons of runs for the record books. What if Michael Clarke has the aesthetics, we have the runs. So why worry, I will have my entertainment soon.

Earning keep ?
by KK on Oct 14, 2004 12:18 AM

Good article, well researched. The most pampered and worshipped people in India do nothing to show most of the time. I admit it is not all the time (thankfully), but consistency is the factor that is missing in Indian cricket. None of our players is consistent.

Maybe not, so let's make it business
by Ramkumar Chandrasekaran on Oct 14, 2004 12:17 AM

Money is fine. The fans and sponsors will pump in money for cricket, let anybody play. If players don't get that, the administrators will. The Board won't invest the money in welfare programs for the underprivileged. Better these bums than those. What is stupid is the lack of a tough stand from the selectors in rotating people. Kick the non performers (a series or two) out. Make all realize that a spot on this Get-Super-Rich-And-Famous team is very tough to get and is very demanding. Don't give anybody much time to settle down. The Indian team is not the place to settle down. Settle down well in domestic cricket and break in. Just like a guy moving to a bigger salary will have a tougher work schedule and ethic to handle. That way the domestic competition will get better with all fighting for a spot in the National team. I am sure that not more than 2 guys in a Ranji team have aspirations to make it to the top. Because most of them know that there is a better chance to get snow in Chennai in May than a spot in the National team because of the politics.

If the team doesn't want to work harder for the sentiments of the fans or patriotic reasons, let's make it business then.

Satya
to each his own
by Satya on Oct 13, 2004 11:29 PM

I was brought up in a nation where the motto
was "likhoge-padoge banoge nawaab, kheloge-khudoge banoge
kharab". The same nation
is undergoing some changes and understanding for the first time the
importance of playing professional sport. People dedicated to ng the
performance. Unlike you and me, there is no becoming "permanent"
as in a government job. These guys face scrutiny and the axe in front
of millions of Indian fans. These guys need to feed their kids too.
Along with the honor and pressure of playing for their nation, they
are all too aware of each of their outings. A brilliant fifty and you are
God. A couple of failures and its your head. Perhaps as a cricketing
nation, we are second to only Pakistan in the
volatile department. Giving some form of security and balance to the
plyers, I beleive, is a step in the right direction. People's performance
should be assessed in a season, be it coaches, captains, or the
players. Wright, Ganguly and bunch of the same guys who are being
crucified
at the moment are part of the team that made the nation proud
in the World cup, Australia and Pak. Winning here is considered the
final frontier for the
best. Believe.

The annual contract
by Ali on Oct 13, 2004 10:48 PM

The contract should be for series to series, not annual. The grading should also change according to performance.

Nice article
by Ramkumar Chandrasekaran on Oct 13, 2004 10:09 PM

Very nicely written. Wish the Indian cricket team would read it and feel the way it is messing up. It is outrageous to see the way they mess around with the sentiments of the fans. If they even cared about it, they would, as the author clearly says, practice, practice and practice to become a top cricketing nation. Barring fancy top individual records, what team records does the Indian team have, in this team sport called cricket??? A world cup (which was a sensational upset).

More than this, I hope the quintessential Indian fan gets smart and give the whole team a slap on the wrist.

Arvind Lavakare article
by Prakash Ranganathan on Oct 13, 2004 07:22 PM

Mr. Lavakare hit the nail right on the head. Our cricketers are over rated and pampered. Most of them behave like prima donnas and need to be brought down to earth. The so called 'last frontier' for the Australians is going to be realized on this tour and will hopefully make our cricket crazy public see our cricketers in their true colors.

average
by vijay on Oct 13, 2004 03:41 PM

the article is v.average, why u cant post the article when the team is in good run for almost 1 1/2 yr,did anyone forget how our team is performing since the world cup,,sont try to put them down when they are already down and trying to come up.

comments on yuvraj, since his debut in indian team,he has taken so many outstanding catches that had kept india team top in some matches,,he is still india's one of the top fielder after azharuddin and jadeja.

should not make any comments on the team when ,team is in bad shape..any one can dare to comment when team is good.

articles like this will defnitely down the morale of the team performances.

anyone thought that indian team will reach to the final of worl cup, draw a series in australia after leading and almost won the last test, winning test sries and one day series in pakistan.

think it out how long ago we won a test series in pakistan,is that the editor of the article is commenting without knowing all these facts.

dear editor the contract is confirmed only recently, and forced to confirm this contract due to the indian team performances.

BEST OF LUCK-INDIANteam,raise ur sprits & shut the critics with ur performances.
